The effect may be active on the camera, saved in your Lens carousel, repeatedly recommended, or stuck because Snapchat is malfunctioning. Start with the matching fix below; none of these steps is intended to delete your Memories, Snaps, or Chats.
First, identify what you are seeing
Snapchat calls live augmented-reality effects Lenses; Filters are applied after or around a Snap. Snapchat’s explanation of Lenses is available at its Lens support page.
- Effect is on the live camera: another Lens or the normal camera view should remove it.
- A “trippy” tile remains in the Lens carousel: remove that unlocked Lens.
- A Lens icon appears when you point the camera at objects: disable object-based recommendations.
- The effect is in an old photo or video: it is already baked into the captured file.
- Colors, distortion, or animation remain after changing Lenses: treat it as a camera or loading problem.
The Lens catalog changes over time, so a Lens with “Trippy” in its name may later be replaced or unavailable. Snapchat describes this changing availability at Why are some Lenses no longer available?
Remove the Lens from the carousel
Use this when the effect is an unlocked Lens that keeps appearing among your selectable Lenses:

- Open Snapchat’s Camera screen.
- Tap or swipe to open the Lens carousel.
- Scroll to the Lens you want to remove.
- Tap the information icon above the Lens button.
- Tap Remove Lens.
Snapchat documents this control in its Lens support instructions. The information icon is not shown for every Lens state or interface layout. If it is missing, determine whether you are seeing a recommendation or continue to the data-reset steps.
Delete stored Lens-related data
If one Lens remains associated with your account or carousel after the narrower removal command, delete the Lenses data category:
- Open your profile and tap the gear icon.
- Go to App & Privacy.
- Tap My Privacy & Data.
- Under Manage My Data, tap Clear Data.
- Select Lenses and confirm.
The labels or location can vary by operating system, country, and app rollout. Snapchat lists this route at How do I delete my data on Snapchat?

This removes the selected Lens-related data category from your account experience. It does not erase a Lens from Snapchat’s catalog for everyone, and it cannot undo an effect already captured in a photo or video. Use this broader reset only when removing one carousel item is insufficient.

A Lens icon that appears whenever the camera recognizes an object is a recommendation, not necessarily a saved Lens. To turn off that feature:
- Open your profile and tap the gear icon.
- Tap Scan.
- Under Real-time Scan, turn Objects off.
This controls object-based real-time recommendations; it does not disable every Lens or remove an effect that is already active. See Snapchat’s explanation at What is the Lens icon that keeps popping up on my toolbar?

Fix a Lens that is stuck, distorted, or glitching
Apply these in order, stopping when the camera returns to normal:
- Select another Lens, or leave the Lens carousel for the standard camera.
- Fully close Snapchat and open it again.
- Switch between Wi‑Fi and mobile data.
- Update Snapchat through the App Store, Google Play, or Amazon Appstore, as applicable.
- Restart the phone.
- Clear Snapchat’s cache using the platform-specific paths below.
- Delete Lens data through Clear Data > Lenses.
- Test another Lens and, if possible, another compatible device.
- Report the problem as a bug if it persists.

Clear cache on iPhone or iPad
- Profile → Settings (gear) → App & Privacy.
- Tap My Privacy & Data.
- Under Manage My Data, tap Clear Cache.
- Confirm with Clear.
Clear cache on Android
- Profile → Settings (gear) → App & Privacy.
- Tap My Privacy & Data.
- Tap Clear Data, then Clear Cache.
- Confirm with Clear.
Snapchat says clearing cache does not delete Memories, Snaps, or Chats. Its platform instructions are at How do I clear my cache on Snapchat? Menu names can differ, so use Snapchat’s in-app Settings search if your screen does not match.

If the effect is already on a saved Snap
Removing a Lens from the carousel, clearing Lens data, or clearing cache does not reconstruct an unaltered image. A Lens effect is rendered into the photo or video when you capture it. Your practical choices are:
- Retake the Snap with another Lens or no Lens.
- Use an original copy from Memories or your phone’s Camera Roll, if one exists.
- Try Snapchat’s editing tools, understanding that they generally cannot reliably restore the original face, colors, or background.
Why the Lens may not disappear
The item is a recommendation, not a saved Lens
Use Scan → Real-time Scan → Objects to stop object-based prompts. The Remove Lens command applies to an unlocked carousel Lens instead.
The Lens expired or was rotated out
Snapchat continually updates its catalog, and some Lenses disappear. Check Lens Explorer or try again later rather than installing an unofficial APK or “Snapchat fixer” app.

Your phone does not support that Lens
Snapchat says Lenses are supported on Apple devices running iOS 12 or newer and most Android devices running Android 4.4 or newer, but individual Lenses can require additional hardware or processing capability. A Lens may work on one phone and fail on another. Details are in Why are some Lenses not working on Snapchat?
Snapchat’s interface differs
Settings labels and menu hierarchy vary by platform, region, and staged app rollout. If an option is absent, update Snapchat and use the in-app search before assuming your account lacks the feature.
When a Lens keeps coming back
Removing a Lens is not a permanent block on that Lens or similar effects. Snapchat says Lens ranking can use signals including engagement, favorites, sharing, removal, reporting, device type, connection, country, and other activity. Therefore, removal indicates disinterest but does not guarantee that the same or a similar Lens will never be recommended again. See How We Rank Lenses on Snapchat.
Report an unresolved camera problem
After updating, restarting, changing networks, clearing cache, and testing another Lens, report the issue in Snapchat through Settings → Bugs and Suggestions → Report a Bug. Snapchat’s crash and malfunction guidance is at My Snapchat app isn’t working right or is crashing.
The Bottom Line
For a live trippy effect, switch Lenses. For a carousel item, use information → Remove Lens. For recurring object prompts, turn off Scan → Real-time Scan → Objects. Use cache clearing and Lens-data deletion for glitches, and remember that no Snapchat setting can reliably remove an effect already captured in a saved Snap.
