How to Get Product Hunt Products, Upvotes, and Maker Data with the Official API

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Don’t scrape Product Hunt pages for products, upvotes, or makers. Product Hunt’s Terms of Service prohibit manual and automated crawling, scraping, and spidering of its pages and data. Use its official v2 GraphQL API instead: it exposes structured Post fields for product details, current vote counts, makers, creators, timestamps, and rankings. You’ll need an access token, and commercial use requires contacting Product Hunt first.

Why use the API instead of scraping pages?

The official API is the appropriate way to build a Product Hunt dataset. Its stated goal is to provide access to Product Hunt data through a simple GraphQL interface. Rather than extracting text from page markup, you request the fields you need from the documented API endpoint: https://api.producthunt.com/v2/api/graphql.

That distinction matters for both compliance and data quality. Product Hunt’s Terms of Service prohibit crawling, scraping, or spidering any page, data, or content relating to its services, whether done manually or automatically. They also prohibit certain processes that interfere with the service, including placing an unreasonable load on its infrastructure. The terms say violations can be grounds for termination of access. A headless browser, HTML parser, or reverse-engineered private endpoint is therefore not a safe workaround.

  • Authorization: the API uses an access token; scraping pages does not replace that documented authorization route.
  • Structured fields: GraphQL lets you request named Post fields such as votesCount and makers, rather than relying on page selectors that can change.
  • Freshness: votesCount is the current aggregate when you retrieve it, not a guaranteed historical snapshot.
  • Operational limits: API clients should respect fair-use expectations and rate limits. Product Hunt reserves the right to rate-limit applications that do not.

What Product Hunt data can you request?

The documented Post reference covers the core fields for a product launch dataset. Choose fields based on your use case rather than requesting everything. A practical record can include:

Purpose Fields What they tell you
Identify a launch id, name, tagline, description, slug, url, website The Post identity, its descriptive text, its Product Hunt URL, and its destination website.
Track timing createdAt, featuredAt When the Post was created and, when present, when it was featured.
Record engagement votesCount, commentsCount, reviewsCount, reviewsRating Current vote count and available comment or review context.
Attribute people makers, user, userId The users marked as makers and the user who created the Post.
Compare rank dailyRank, weeklyRank, monthlyRank, yearlyRank Available rank values for their respective periods.
Collect supporting material productLinks, media Additional links and media associated with the launch.

Do not confuse isVoted with the aggregate. It describes the viewer’s vote state; votesCount is the current total. If you want to study changes over time, store each retrieval as a timestamped observation instead of overwriting the previous count.

A useful normalized record shape is post_id, name, tagline, slug, post_url, website_url, created_at, votes_count, maker_ids, maker_names, creator_id, and retrieved_at. The API documentation does not promise a fixed historical snapshot of votes, so treat your own retrieval log as observations made at particular times—not as Product Hunt’s official historical totals.

Set up API access

  1. Create or configure an application. Use Product Hunt’s My Apps flow. The API supports public, private, and write scopes; public scope is the default read-oriented scope for third-party applications.
  2. Obtain an access token. Follow the documented OAuth flow, or use the developer-token route described in Product Hunt’s API documentation for scripts tied to your account. Keep the token private; do not commit it to source control or expose it in browser-side code.
  3. Send a GraphQL request. Make a POST request to https://api.producthunt.com/v2/api/graphql and send Authorization: Bearer YOUR_ACCESS_TOKEN plus a JSON body containing a GraphQL query.
  4. Request only needed fields. Start with launch identity, votes, makers, creator, and timestamps. Add rankings or engagement context if your analysis needs them.
  5. Follow connection pagination. For a connection, inspect its returned cursor and hasNextPage; request subsequent pages using the cursor. Do not assume a single response contains all matching Posts.

The API documentation is the authority for the available fields, token flow, and application requirements. The examples below show a minimal connection query pattern; check the schema available to your application if a field or connection differs.

Request product, vote, and maker fields with cURL

This example requests ten Posts and includes the core values useful for a launch record. Replace the token with one you obtained through Product Hunt’s documented flow.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
curl 'https://api.producthunt.com/v2/api/graphql'
  -H 'Authorization: Bearer YOUR_ACCESS_TOKEN'
  -H 'Content-Type: application/json'
  --data-raw '{"query":"query { posts(first: 10) { edges { node { id name tagline slug url website createdAt votesCount makers { edges { node { id name } } } user { id } } } pageInfo { endCursor hasNextPage } } }"}'

The response is JSON. Read each Post from data.posts.edges[].node, read the maker users from node.makers.edges[].node, and use data.posts.pageInfo to determine whether to request another page. GraphQL may return an errors array even when the HTTP response itself arrives successfully, so inspect both the transport status and response body.

Use Python to fetch and preserve a page

The following script sends the same read-only query, checks for HTTP and GraphQL errors, and writes the returned JSON to a file. It records a retrieval time alongside the raw response so the mutable vote count has context. Install the dependency first with python -m pip install requests.

print(f"Saved {len(record['posts']['edges'])} Posts")
print("More pages available:", record["posts"]["pageInfo"]["hasNextPage"])

Set the token in your shell rather than writing it into the script. For example, on macOS or Linux, run export PRODUCT_HUNT_ACCESS_TOKEN='your-token' in the same shell before starting Python. For pagination, repeat the request with an after variable set to the prior page’s endCursor while hasNextPage is true. Confirm the exact argument syntax against the API schema used by your application.

Use Node.js to make the same GraphQL request

With a current Node.js runtime that provides fetch, this example sends the query and prints the returned Post nodes. It also checks GraphQL errors separately from HTTP errors.

      }
    }
    pageInfo { endCursor hasNextPage }

}`;

const response = await fetch('https://api.producthunt.com/v2/api/graphql', {
  method: 'POST',
  headers: {
    Authorization: `Bearer ${token}`,
    'Content-Type': 'application/json'
  },
  body: JSON.stringify({ query })
});
if (!response.ok) {
  throw new Error(`HTTP ${response.status}: ${await response.text()}`);
}
const result = await response.json();
if (result.errors) throw new Error(JSON.stringify(result.errors));

const posts = result.data.posts;
console.log(JSON.stringify(posts.edges.map(edge => edge.node), null, 2));
console.log('More pages available:', posts.pageInfo.hasNextPage);

For an ongoing collector, persist records with an upsert keyed by Post ID and retain a separate observation timestamp for each vote-count sample. This keeps product metadata manageable while preserving the times at which your system saw a particular count.

Handle pagination, rate limits, and changing counts

Continue until the connection is complete

GraphQL connections commonly provide page information such as an end cursor and a hasNextPage boolean. The documented implementation approach is to request the next page using the returned cursor until the connection reports no further page. Use the actual connection shape and arguments exposed in Product Hunt’s schema; do not guess a page-size maximum or assume every nested field has the same pagination behavior.

Keep requests fair and deliberate

Select only the fields needed, avoid repeatedly requesting unchanged records without a reason, and cache conservatively. Product Hunt says it may rate-limit applications that do not follow fair use. The documentation does not establish a universal numeric request limit here, so do not build a client around an assumed quota. If you receive throttling or other access errors, slow the request cadence and consult the application’s documented limits.

Interpret votes as observations, not a permanent score

A value of votesCount may differ between two successful requests because it is current at retrieval time. Record timestamps in UTC, retain the Post ID, and avoid labelling a single sample as a launch-day total or a historical count unless you have a separate source that establishes that claim. Rankings are also only available when returned for a Post and period.

Commercial use needs approval before launch

Product Hunt’s API documentation states that the API must not be used for commercial purposes and directs businesses to contact [email protected]. Treat that as a launch-blocking check for a paid dataset, client reporting product, or revenue-generating integration. Contact Product Hunt and obtain clarification before building a commercial use around the API; do not assume that public access or a working token grants commercial permission.

The official help-center answer to whether Product Hunt has an API was published July 28, 2025; the answer was, “Yes, we do!” That confirms an API exists, but it does not override the API documentation’s commercial-use restriction or the Terms of Service limits on scraping.

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server, not a way to collect Product Hunt’s structured product, vote, or maker dataset. It does not grant permission to capture Product Hunt pages. For a site you are authorized to capture, it can return a screenshot or PDF without setting up a browser automation stack. Its pre-capture cleanup can accept cookie or consent banners and remove 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents and MCP clients.

Example cURL request for a permitted target:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. It supports PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF output; full-page capture with lazy images loaded; element capture by CSS selector; dark mode; 12 device presets and custom viewports; retina scale; PDF paper, margin, orientation, and page-range settings; HTML/CSS input; custom CSS and JavaScript; click-before-capture; selector hiding; selector, delay, or network-idle waits; request and resource blocking; custom headers, cookies, user agent, and Authorization; timezone and geolocation; transparent backgrounds; resizing; configurable cache TTL; signed links for public image tags; async jobs with signed webhooks; bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call; a usage API; and an OpenAPI spec. It also accepts parameter names used by other screenshot APIs to make switching easier.

Troubleshooting common API failures

Symptom Likely cause What to do
HTTP 401 or 403 Missing, invalid, expired, or insufficiently scoped token. Check that the request includes Authorization: Bearer …, confirm the token and application configuration, and use the documented authorization flow.
HTTP success but response has errors Invalid GraphQL syntax, an unsupported field, or a field shape that does not match the schema. Read the GraphQL error message, verify the field and connection shape in the API reference, and request a smaller query to isolate the problem.
Only some Posts appear The connection is paginated. Check hasNextPage and continue with the returned cursor; do not treat the first page as the full result.
Requests are throttled The application may be exceeding fair-use expectations or its applicable limits. Reduce frequency, cache results conservatively, request fewer fields, and consult Product Hunt’s API guidance for your application.
Vote count differs from an earlier export votesCount is a current value that can change. Preserve each count with its retrieval timestamp and distinguish snapshots from historical totals.
A commercial feature is ready but permission is unclear The API documentation does not permit commercial use by default. Pause launch plans that depend on commercial API use and contact Product Hunt at [email protected].
