You can show songs identified by Pixel’s Now Playing on a Wear OS watch with a third-party companion app, Now On Wrist. The Pixel phone still does the ambient recognition; the app’s Google Play listing says it forwards the detected song information to the watch. Google’s own Now Playing instructions cover the phone, not an official Wear OS setup flow.
What you need
- A Pixel phone with Now Playing enabled and recognizing nearby music.
- A Wear OS watch running version 3.0 or higher, as specified by the Now On Wrist listing.
- Now On Wrist installed on both devices, with the exact watch model shown as compatible in Google Play.
Now On Wrist is a third-party bridge, not a Google Now Playing feature. Its listing was updated on September 24, 2026; check the current listing because app features and compatibility can change.

Set up song recognition on the Pixel phone
- Enable Now Playing on the Pixel and confirm it identifies nearby music. Google says recognized songs can appear on the phone’s lock screen. The Google Pixel Now Playing help page also describes searching for songs and viewing history through the Now Playing app, widget and Quick Settings.
- If you have just downloaded the Now Playing app, allow time for it to become ready: Google says this can take up to 24 hours.
Install and connect Now On Wrist
- Open the Now On Wrist Google Play listing on the phone and check that your watch is listed as compatible. The listing requires a phone with ambient recognition enabled and a Wear OS 3.0-or-newer watch; Pixel Watch is one example, not a guarantee for every model.
- Install the app on the phone and watch. Google’s Pixel Watch app-installation instructions describe installing apps through the Play Store on the watch. App availability can vary by device and region, so use the store on your own devices to confirm.
- Pair or sync the devices and grant the permissions the app requests. The listing does not provide a complete permission-by-permission setup sequence, so follow the prompts shown on your devices rather than assuming a particular settings path or automatic notification behavior.
Where to see detected songs on the watch
Now On Wrist’s listing describes song information through notifications, a tile, watch-face complications and history. Which of those surfaces is available or convenient can depend on your watch and setup. The listing describes the phone as the recognizer and the watch as the display; it does not establish that the watch listens for music independently.

Use Now Playing on the phone
The Pixel’s lock screen, Now Playing app, widget and Quick Settings remain the native ways to see, search or review recognized songs. Google’s documentation does not say that these results automatically mirror to every Wear OS watch.

Try Shazam as a separate option
Shazam’s official apps page mentions Android Wear. Shazam is a separate recognition app, not a way to forward Google Now Playing results, and its page does not establish compatibility or setup steps for every current Wear OS model.
Keep recognition, playback and watch display distinct
Pixel Now Playing identifies nearby music on the phone. Pixel Watch music apps and playback controls are a different function: Google’s Pixel Watch music help page covers YouTube Music, Spotify and controls such as changing volume or what is playing; it does not document ambient song recognition by the watch.

Privacy: two separate data flows
Google says Now Playing uses an on-device song library. If the phone cannot identify a track locally or needs more song details, it may send a short digital audio fingerprint to Google for cloud matching; Google says it does not send raw audio or background conversations. See Google’s Now Playing explanation.
Separately, the Now On Wrist developer’s Play listing says the companion does not record audio or upload data and uses Google Play Services’ local Wearable Data Layer. That is the developer’s claim about its app, not an independent audit, and it does not change Google’s separate description of how phone-side Now Playing may identify a song.
