How to Get Permits and Reservations for Visiting Chaco Culture National Historical Park (2026 Guide)

By Freedom251 Team · · 13 min read

For a normal day visit to Chaco Culture National Historical Park, you need an entrance pass, not a timed-entry reservation. A private-vehicle pass is $25 and valid for seven days. Overnight visitors must arrange a separate Gallo Campground reservation through Recreation.gov. Weddings, memorials, organized assemblies, athletic events, resource collection and similar activities may require an advance written special-use permit. As of October 2026, the north-road entrance is inaccessible after storm damage; the south road is the only entry route identified by the National Park Service (NPS), so check current alerts immediately before leaving.

What you need to arrange

Chaco separates ordinary admission, camping and organized activities into different transactions. Buying an entrance pass does not reserve a campsite, and a campground reservation does not replace the entrance fee. A special-use permit is an additional approval for activities that need written authorization or management controls.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Day sightseeing: Buy the appropriate seven-day entrance pass.
  • Overnight stay: Reserve an individual or group campsite at Gallo Campground through Recreation.gov, then pay the campsite charge in addition to admission.
  • Organized or unusual activity: Ask the park permit coordinator whether a special-use permit is required and apply in advance when it is.

The NPS pages reviewed do not describe a timed-entry reservation for ordinary sightseeing. You can therefore plan a day visit without booking an arrival time, provided you have a valid entrance pass and can reach the park under current road and operating conditions.

Entrance passes for a day visit

Current pass types and prices

Entry method Price Validity and coverage
Private vehicle $25 Up to seven days; covers the driver and passengers in one private, noncommercial vehicle
Motorcycle $20 Seven days
Individual pedestrian or bicyclist $15 Seven days
Children under 16 entering on foot or bicycle No individual pass Applies to the child’s individual entry; other applicable fees still govern the visit

The $25 private-vehicle figure is the current NPS fee published for a pass valid for up to seven days. The pass is nontransferable. If you return on another day within that seven-day period, use the same pass according to its display and validation instructions.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

How to buy the pass

  1. Buy online before departure: Use Recreation.gov to purchase the pass. NPS says online passes are available immediately and can be downloaded or printed.
  2. Print or save the pass: Print it for display on the vehicle windshield, particularly if you may arrive when the visitor center is closed. Keep any digital copy available as a backup.
  3. Buy at the visitor center: The visitor center also sells entrance passes during its operating hours.
  4. Carry a payment card: Entrance-fee transactions are cashless. Bring a credit or debit card.

Eligible Interagency passes—including qualifying Annual, Military, Senior, Every Kid in a Park and Access passes—are honored. Eligibility and current rates can change, so verify the pass category on the NPS Fees & Passes information before relying on it.

How to reserve Gallo Campground

Booking window and availability

Gallo Campground has individual and group sites. NPS guidance says reservations open three months before the intended date, while the fee guidance says a campsite reservation must be made at least one day in advance. Those rules describe the booking window, not a guarantee that a site will still be available. Check the live Recreation.gov listing for inventory, dates, site restrictions and the exact payment screen.

  1. Open the current Gallo Campground listing on Recreation.gov.
  2. Search for the arrival and departure dates. If your dates fall outside the three-month opening window, wait until the booking window opens.
  3. Choose an individual site or a group site based on party size, equipment and vehicle type.
  4. Review the site rules, number of nights and total charge before paying.
  5. Save the confirmation on your phone and print a copy in case connectivity is poor on the approach.
  6. Bring the reservation details to the park. Group leaders must check in at the visitor center before setting up.

Unreserved sites may sometimes be released first-come, first-served, but that is only a possibility. Do not drive the long approach assuming a site will be waiting. A reservation is the reliable way to match a campsite to your dates.

Site charges and capacity limits

Site type Nightly charge Capacity and restrictions
Individual site $20 per night Up to six people, two tents and two vehicles
Individual site with eligible Interagency Senior or Access pass $10 per night Discounted campsite charge; the site’s normal capacity rules still apply
Group site $60 per night 10–30 people; two group sites; tent camping only; no RVs or pop-up trailers

Camping charges are separate from the entrance pass. Individual stays are limited to 14 consecutive days and 30 total camping days in a calendar year. Group stays are limited to seven consecutive days. Check-out is at 11 a.m.

If a camper has not arrived by the second day of the reservation, NPS says the remaining portion may be forfeited and released first-come, first-served. If a delay is possible, contact the campground or park as soon as you can rather than assuming the reservation will be held.

What Gallo Campground provides—and what it does not

  • Water and flush toilets are available.
  • Visitor-center and campground bathrooms are listed as open 24 hours.
  • There are no showers and no utility hookups.
  • The campground has no shade.
  • Sites include picnic tables and fire grates; most have tent pads.
  • Bring firewood or charcoal. Gathering wood is prohibited, and firewood is not sold in the park.

Five campsites—20, 21, 23, 24 and 25—and the nearby trail to the cliff dwelling are permanently closed because of rockfall risk. NPS explains that rockfall is unpredictable and allowing camping in those sites could expose visitors to severe injury or death. Do not enter closed sites or try to use the closed trail.

When a special-use permit is required

NPS requires an advance special-use permit when an activity benefits an individual, group or organization rather than the public at large and needs written authorization or management control to protect park resources and the public interest. Examples include:

  • Weddings and memorial services
  • Special assemblies and First Amendment activities
  • Athletic events
  • Collecting resource materials
  • Other organized activities that reserve space, involve larger groups or create effects beyond ordinary sightseeing

The activity list is illustrative, not an automatic exemption or approval. Contact the park permit coordinator at 505-634-6961 with the date, location, group size, equipment, vehicles, sound, structures and purpose. The coordinator can determine which application, conditions and lead time apply.

Photography, filming and audio recording

Filming, still photography or audio recording involving eight or fewer people generally does not require a permit or fee only when every stated condition is met:

  • The activity occurs in areas open to the public.
  • All equipment is hand-carried.
  • No site is used exclusively.
  • The activity does not adversely affect park resources or other visitors.
  • It is not likely to create additional NPS administrative costs.

This exception does not remove ordinary entrance or recreation fees, and other park rules still apply. A commercial or content-creation purpose alone does not answer the permit question. Ask the park before bringing tripods, lighting, generators, props, models, drones, large crews or equipment that could alter how a site is used.

Does camping itself require a permit?

The Superintendent’s Compendium separately states that camping requires a permit. For ordinary visitors, the practical process described by NPS is the Gallo campground reservation and compliance with campground rules. If you are unsure whether a particular stay, backcountry plan or group arrangement falls under a separate permit requirement, ask NPS while confirming the reservation. Do not substitute an entrance pass for camping authorization.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Road access: check this before making any reservation

Access is unusually volatile. An NPS alert dated September 30, 2026 and updated October 3 reports that catastrophic storm damage made the north-road entrance via County Road 7950 inaccessible. The south road is the only entry point NPS identifies for the foreseeable future.

The southern approach includes about 21 miles (34 km) of dirt road. NPS describes southern routes as ranging from very rough to impassable when wet and does not recommend them for RVs. Conditions can change faster than a reservation calendar, so check the live NPS Alerts & Conditions page immediately before departure and again after significant rain. Call the park if the status is unclear.

Use NPS directions rather than relying only on a map publisher or GPS. The park warns that some locally suggested roads are unsafe or private. A campground confirmation does not mean every approach road is passable on the day you travel.

Hours, gates and arrival timing

Season Park and archaeological-site hours Loop-road gate
May 1–October 31 7 a.m.–9 p.m. Closes 30 minutes before park closing
March 1–April 30 7 a.m.–7 p.m. Closes 30 minutes before park closing
November 1–February 28 7 a.m.–5 p.m. Closes 30 minutes before park closing

The visitor center is generally open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The park closes on Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day; check the current holiday schedule and any campground closure notices before setting out. The gate’s early closure matters if you are trying to enter late in the day, even though the listed park closing time is later.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Trails are self-guided. Backcountry hikers must sign in at the trailhead. All visitors must leave the loop road, trails and archaeological sites by the applicable closing time. Plan enough daylight for the approach, parking, walking and return to the gate rather than treating the closing time as the start of your exit.

How the costs fit together

A two-night visit by private vehicle normally involves at least two separate charges: the $25 vehicle entrance pass and $40 for an individual campsite. An eligible Senior or Access pass reduces the individual campsite charge to $10 per night, but it does not automatically eliminate every entrance charge unless the pass is an accepted entrance pass under its terms. A group camping trip costs $60 per night for the group site, plus the applicable entrance pass for the arriving vehicle or visitors.

These figures are park-published rates and can change. Recreation.gov displays the campsite total during checkout, while the NPS Fees & Passes page controls current entrance pricing and accepted pass categories. Check both before budgeting. Keep the confirmation numbers offline because cell service can be unreliable on the approach.

Reservation, permit and access pitfalls

  • Confusing admission with lodging: An entrance pass gets you into the park; it does not hold a campsite.
  • Assuming first-come availability: An unreserved site might exist, but it may be gone before you arrive.
  • Arriving after the deadline: Failure to arrive by the second day can put the rest of an individual reservation at risk.
  • Choosing the wrong group site: Group sites are for 10–30 tent campers and cannot accommodate RVs or pop-up trailers.
  • Relying on GPS: Some suggested roads are private or unsafe, and the south road can become impassable when wet.
  • Planning around the posted closing time only: The loop-road gate closes 30 minutes earlier.
  • Treating a small crew as automatically exempt: The photography and recording exception applies only when all listed conditions are satisfied.
  • Bringing prohibited or unavailable supplies: There is no firewood for sale, no wood gathering, no showers and no utility hookups.
  • Ignoring permanent closures: Rockfall closures include campsites 20, 21, 23, 24 and 25 and the nearby cliff-dwelling trail.

Planning the visit by scenario

Day trip with no campground reservation

  1. Check the NPS access alert and south-road weather conditions.
  2. Buy a private-vehicle, motorcycle or individual pass, or confirm that your Interagency pass is valid.
  3. Print the pass or keep the downloaded copy accessible.
  4. Use the NPS route and arrive within seasonal hours.
  5. Leave all sites and roads before closing and before the loop-road gate’s 30-minute early closure.

You can enter for sightseeing without holding a campground reservation. Camping availability is irrelevant unless you plan to stay overnight.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Overnight individual camper

  1. Reserve an individual Gallo site through Recreation.gov when your dates open.
  2. Pay the campsite charge and separately obtain the entrance pass.
  3. Confirm that your party, tents and vehicles fit the six-person, two-tent and two-vehicle limit.
  4. Bring water-appropriate supplies, firewood or charcoal, and equipment suitable for an unshaded site without hookups.
  5. Arrive by the reservation’s second day or risk forfeiting the remainder.
  6. Observe the 11 a.m. checkout and all closed-site restrictions.

Group camping

  1. Reserve one of the two group sites in advance.
  2. Confirm that the group contains 10–30 people and will use tents rather than an RV or pop-up trailer.
  3. Carry the reservation confirmation and have the group leader check in at the visitor center before setting up.
  4. Limit the stay to seven consecutive days and follow any instructions issued at check-in.

Wedding, memorial or organized event

  1. Describe the activity to the permit coordinator before announcing a final setup or date.
  2. Provide group size, location, timing, vehicles, equipment, sound and any structures or resource interaction.
  3. Apply for the special-use permit in the timeframe NPS specifies.
  4. Keep the written authorization with the group and continue to follow entrance, hours, road and resource-protection rules.

What to do if plans change

Road conditions may force a delay even when a reservation is confirmed. Do not assume that a campground booking guarantees access after a storm. Recheck alerts, contact the park or campground, and review the Recreation.gov terms for any change or cancellation options before altering dates. If you are delayed until the second day of an individual reservation, notify NPS promptly because the remaining nights may be forfeited. A group leader should also report a delayed arrival before attempting to set up.

If your activity changes after a permit application—for example, a larger group, additional vehicles, amplified sound or new structures—contact the permit coordinator again. Written authorization for one configuration should not be treated as approval for a materially different setup.

Departure checklist

  • Current NPS alerts checked on the day of travel
  • South-road condition and weather reviewed; RV suitability confirmed
  • Entrance pass purchased or qualifying Interagency pass verified
  • Printed pass and reservation confirmation available offline
  • Gallo dates, site type, capacity and arrival deadline confirmed
  • Separate special-use permit obtained if the activity requires one
  • Credit or debit card available for cashless entry
  • Firewood or charcoal packed; no plan to gather wood
  • Closing time and 30-minute gate cutoff built into the itinerary
  • Closed campsites and trail areas excluded from the route

The practical decision is straightforward: buy an entrance pass for a day visit, add a Recreation.gov campsite reservation for an overnight stay, and contact NPS for any organized activity or unusual filming setup. In October 2026, road verification is just as important as the paperwork because the north entrance remains inaccessible and the rough, weather-sensitive south road is the sole identified entry route.

Is the road to Chaco open right now?

As of the October 3, 2026 NPS alert, the north-road entrance via County Road 7950 is inaccessible after catastrophic storm damage. The south road is the only entry route NPS identifies for the foreseeable future, and its roughly 21 miles of dirt road can become impassable when wet. Check NPS alerts immediately before travel.

Does a small photography crew need a permit?

Filming, still photography or audio recording involving eight or fewer people may avoid a permit and fee only when all conditions are met: public areas, hand-carried equipment, no exclusive site use, no adverse effects and no added NPS administrative burden. Ask the park about unusual equipment or setups.

How do I ask about a special-use permit?

Contact the park permit coordinator at 505-634-6961. Provide the date, location, group size, equipment, vehicles, sound, structures and purpose so NPS can identify the applicable process.

What are Gallo Campground’s main limits?

Individual sites allow up to six people, two tents and two vehicles. Individual stays are limited to 14 consecutive days and 30 camping days per calendar year; group stays are limited to seven consecutive days. Checkout is 11 a.m.

The Bottom Line

For a standard visit, buy a seven-day entrance pass; reserve Gallo Campground separately through Recreation.gov if staying overnight; and contact NPS at 505-634-6961 for weddings, organized events, resource collection or unusual filming. Check the October 2026 road alert, weather and seasonal gate hours before departure because the south road is currently the only identified entry route.
