Try a functioning exit or the vehicle’s model-specific manual release when it is safe to do so; do not assume an escape tool can break every type of window.
What to do first when a car door will not open
Decide whether staying inside is immediately dangerous. Fire, smoke, rising water, or another urgent threat changes the priority from diagnosing the door to getting to a safer place. If there is no immediate danger, try available exits and controls methodically rather than forcing a jammed door.

- Try another door. Check each passenger door and the trunk or hatch if it opens into a usable exit and your vehicle allows access from inside.
- Check the lock and interior handle. Unlock the doors using the interior control, then try the handle again. A child-safety lock or a failed lock mechanism can affect a particular door.
- Try a functioning window. Use the window switch if it works and the circumstances make a window exit safe. Avoid delaying an urgent evacuation to troubleshoot electrical controls.
- Look for the vehicle’s manual release. Consult the owner’s manual or model-specific emergency instructions. In some vehicles, especially electric vehicles, a mechanical release may be separate from the normal powered handle.
- Call emergency services if you cannot get out safely. Give your exact location, explain what is preventing exit, and identify any fire, water, injury, or other hazard. Follow the dispatcher’s directions.
If you are injured, pinned, or restrained, do not pull or twist yourself free in a way that could worsen an injury. Call for help as soon as circumstances allow.

Jammed door on land, with no immediate threat
Use the other steps and exits that remain available, and check the owner’s manual for the correct release procedure. Avoid striking or prying at the door without a clear reason: force may cause injury or damage and may not free the latch. If no safe exit works, contact emergency services or roadside assistance according to the urgency.

Fire, smoke, or another immediate danger
Leave by any functioning door or window that provides a safe route, then move away from the vehicle. If a side window is the only practical exit, an emergency glass breaker may help only if the glass is compatible and the tool can be reached and used. If you cannot exit, call your local emergency number as soon as possible and tell the dispatcher where you are and what is happening. AAA’s U.S. guidance says to attempt escape before calling 911 when a vehicle has hit water or is on fire; use the emergency number for your location.
Vehicle trapped in rapidly moving floodwater
Follow the specific advice from Ready.gov’s flood guidance: stay inside a vehicle trapped in rapidly moving water. If water rises inside, seek refuge on the roof. Do not try to walk or swim through fast-moving floodwater. This instruction applies to rapidly moving floodwater, not every situation involving a vehicle in water.

Vehicle submerged in still water
Do not assume a hammer-style glass breaker will work underwater. AAA warns that this type of tool may be ineffective in that situation. A vehicle submerged in still water is distinct from a vehicle trapped in rapidly moving floodwater, so do not apply one scenario’s advice as a complete plan for the other. Call emergency services when circumstances permit.

Electric-car manual releases are model-specific
An electric vehicle’s normal door handle may depend on electrical power, but some models have a manual emergency release. The location and operation vary by vehicle. The U.S. Fire Administration’s guidance on opening electric-vehicle doors during a crash or loss of power notes that releases may be near a handle, in a door pocket, under a cover, below a window switch, near the floor, or behind an interior trim panel. These are examples, not a universal location or procedure.

Before an emergency, use your own vehicle’s owner’s manual to identify the release and learn how it works. Do not pull an unfamiliar component or assume a procedure shown for another make or model applies to yours. Manufacturer guidance, such as Kia’s instructions for escaping when a vehicle door will not open, should be treated as specific to the vehicles it covers.

Vehicle side windows do not all use the same type of glass. Tempered glass is designed to break differently from laminated glass, and a single vehicle may use different glazing in different window positions. Do not assume the front side windows, rear side windows, and windshield are interchangeable targets.

In its July 16, 2019 report, AAA reported that most of the vehicle escape tools it tested broke tempered side windows, but none penetrated laminated glass. That test does not establish how a particular tool will perform on every vehicle or window. Check the markings on the relevant windows or ask the vehicle manufacturer which panes are tempered or laminated. NHTSA’s regulatory interpretation on pre-breaking glazing addresses glazing requirements and test procedures; it is not a universal consumer escape technique.

A vehicle escape tool with a glass breaker and seat-belt cutter can be useful preparedness equipment, but it is not a guarantee of escape. Its value depends on the window glass, whether you can reach and use it, and the conditions. AAA also cautions that a hammer-style tool may be ineffective underwater. Do not rely on a tool as your only exit plan.

Prepare before you need to get out
- Read your owner’s manual and locate any manual door release, especially if the vehicle has powered or electronic door handles.
- Check the glass markings or ask the manufacturer which windows are tempered and which are laminated.
- If you carry an escape tool, choose where it can be reached while seated and restrained; confirm its instructions and limitations rather than assuming it works on every pane.
- Learn how your doors, window switches, child-safety locks, and emergency releases operate before an emergency.
