For alerts that follow your own journey, set up My Transit Alerts. In the NJ TRANSIT Mobile App, open Rider Tools, choose My Transit Alerts, select Add New Alerts, and save the rail trip, bus route, or light rail service you use. Which NJ TRANSIT alert method should you use?
NJ TRANSIT offers several ways to check or receive service information. The right choice depends on whether you want a notification pushed to you or prefer to look up conditions when you need them.

A practical setup is to use My Transit Alerts for your normal commute and keep Travel Alerts and Advisories or System Status as a manual backup when conditions are changing quickly.

What you need before setting up alerts
- For app push alerts, install the current NJ TRANSIT Mobile App and allow it to send notifications.
- For email or text, create or use a My Transit account and have access to the email address or mobile number you want to receive messages.
- Know the service you want to monitor: the rail stations and travel times, the bus route, or the light rail line.
- Decide whether you need one recurring journey or several. You can save more than one trip or service in My Transit Alerts.
Menu labels can change as the app is updated. If a label differs slightly, follow the current in-app prompt that leads to My Transit Alerts or saved trips.
Set up push notifications in the NJ TRANSIT app
- Open the NJ TRANSIT Mobile App.
- Select Rider Tools.
- Choose My Transit Alerts.
- Tap or select Add New Alerts.
- Choose the service type: Rail, Bus, or Light Rail.
- Enter the stations, route, line, or trip details requested by the app.
- For a rail trip, include both the departure time and the return time when the setup asks for them. This lets the alert selection cover each direction you actually travel.
- Save the alert and repeat the process for another route or journey if needed.
- Open your device’s system settings and confirm that notifications are allowed for NJ TRANSIT. Also check that the app is not blocked by a device-wide notification mode, such as a focus or do-not-disturb setting.
Rail alerts
Rail setup uses the stations and travel times associated with your trip. Enter the origin and destination information accurately, then provide the departure and return times requested by the app. If your schedule changes on different days, create separate saved trips rather than assuming one time covers every journey.
Bus alerts
Select Bus and choose the bus route you need. If the app asks you to identify a stop or direction, use the stop that matches where you board and the direction in which you travel. Review the saved entry before leaving the setup screen so you do not receive information for the opposite direction.

Light rail alerts
Select Light Rail, then choose the relevant line and any stations or trip details requested. Save the alert and verify that app notifications remain enabled after setup.
Manage or remove a saved alert
Return to Rider Tools and My Transit Alerts to review saved or favorite trips. The app’s trip-status views may also provide an alert-setup option. Use the current edit or delete controls to change a station, route, or time when your routine changes.

Set up email or text alerts through My Transit
- Open the NJ TRANSIT My Transit signup or account page.
- Enter the requested account and contact details.
- Choose email, mobile text, or both where the signup form offers those choices.
- For email, select the categories relevant to you. The signup screen lists Travel Alerts, Station Advisories, Service Advisories, and Customer Notices.
- For mobile text, select Travel Alerts and provide the mobile number requested by the form.
- Add the trip or trips you want to monitor, including the appropriate route, stations, line, or other details shown on the page.
- Submit the registration and complete any confirmation step the service presents.
Text delivery can incur your carrier’s standard message or data charges. Those charges are separate from NJ TRANSIT’s My Transit service.
What My Transit Alerts cover
NJ TRANSIT describes My Transit Alerts as notifications tied to the trip or service details you select. The stated coverage includes:

The current My Transit service information says the service operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week. That describes the availability of the alert service; it does not mean every route runs continuously or that every minor operating change will trigger a notification.
How to interpret the 15-minute delay threshold
Use the threshold as a practical guide when deciding whether to wait for a personalized message. A delay of 15 minutes or more that affects the trip details you saved is within the stated scope of My Transit Alerts. A shorter delay may not generate the same type of alert, so check the app, Travel Alerts and Advisories, or station information if a train or bus appears late.
The threshold also applies to the service’s description of trip-impacting delays. It should not be read as an arrival prediction, a guarantee of notification timing, or a statement that all vehicles on a route are delayed by the same amount.

Check service immediately without waiting for a notification
Travel Alerts and Advisories
Use NJ TRANSIT’s public Travel Alerts and Advisories page when you need a current, broad view of disruptions. It is useful before leaving home, when you have not yet saved a trip, or when you suspect a system-wide issue.
System Status in the app
Open the app’s System Status view for a wider network check. Unlike My Transit Alerts, which are based on selected trips or services, System Status is designed to show broader operating conditions.
Line-specific automated feeds
NJ TRANSIT also identifies automated feeds for individual lines. Check the feed for the rail, bus, or light rail service you are using when you want line-level information rather than a notification limited to your saved trip.
Station DEPARTUREVISION
If you are at a station, read the DEPARTUREVISION displays for arrival and departure information. During disruptions, the displays may include special messages that are more useful than a normal timetable view.
My Transit Alerts versus Arrival Alerts
These features answer different questions. My Transit Alerts tell you about delays, schedule changes, service adjustments, and advisories affecting a selected trip or service. Arrival Alerts notify you as a train nears and reaches a destination. Arrival Alerts can help you avoid missing your stop, but they are not a substitute for delay or schedule-change alerts.

If you need to know whether to leave later, take another service, or expect a changed boarding arrangement, use My Transit Alerts or the current status pages. If you are already traveling and want a reminder that your destination is approaching, an arrival notification addresses that narrower need.

Daily commuter
Save the regular rail, bus, or light rail journey in the app and enable push notifications. If you travel back by a different route or at a different time, save that return journey separately. Keep System Status available for a quick check before departing.
Occasional rider
You may not need a permanent alert subscription. Check Travel Alerts and Advisories before the trip, then use the app’s trip-status view for the specific service. Create a My Transit alert when a journey spans several days or has important connections.
Rider who prefers email
Use the My Transit account and select the email categories that match your needs. Station Advisories are useful when accessibility equipment or boarding arrangements matter; Service Advisories and Travel Alerts address operating changes and disruptions.

Choose mobile text and Travel Alerts during signup. Confirm that the mobile number is correct and remember that your carrier may charge standard message or data rates.
Visitor or occasional event traveler
Use the public alerts pages and System Status first, because you may not yet know which trip details to save. Once you have selected the route and stations, add a temporary My Transit alert so changes affecting that journey can reach you directly.
Troubleshoot missing or unexpected alerts
No push notification arrived
- Open the app and verify that the trip still appears under My Transit Alerts.
- Check that the route, stations, direction, and rail departure or return times are correct.
- In the phone’s settings, confirm that NJ TRANSIT notifications are allowed.
- Check whether a focus, do-not-disturb, battery-saving, or background-data setting is suppressing app notifications.
- Use Travel Alerts and Advisories or System Status immediately rather than waiting if the journey is imminent.
You are receiving irrelevant messages
- Review saved trips and remove old routes or stations.
- Correct the direction, station, bus route, line, or travel time in the alert details.
- For email or text, review the notification categories selected in the My Transit account.
Email or text is not arriving
- Confirm the email address or mobile number in the account.
- Check email spam, junk, or filtered folders.
- Confirm that the requested notification category and trip are still selected.
- For SMS, check whether your carrier blocks short-code or service messages and remember that delivery may be affected by normal mobile coverage.
The app’s menu looks different
App labels can change. Look for the current paths leading to Rider Tools, saved trips, or My Transit Alerts, then follow the prompts for adding a rail, bus, or light rail alert.
Use alerts as one part of a travel check
A personalized alert is most useful when the saved trip matches the journey you are actually taking. Before a time-sensitive trip, verify the service in the app or on Travel Alerts and Advisories, especially if you have not traveled that route recently. At the station, compare the notification with the DEPARTUREVISION display and any posted boarding message.

For a return journey, do not assume the outbound alert covers the trip home. Rail setup specifically asks for departure and return times; enter both, and create separate saved entries when the route or timing differs.
Privacy and account choices
Use only the contact details and trip information needed for the notification method you choose. If you stop using a route, remove its saved alert or update the My Transit account so old service notices do not clutter your inbox or phone. If you switch from text to email or app push, change the selected delivery method rather than maintaining unnecessary duplicates.
