On a supported Pixel, the reliable path is Settings > Notifications > Notification summaries: switch summaries on, remove important apps from Don’t include these apps, and allow Android System Intelligence to read notifications. Google’s AI summaries are documented for Pixel 9 and later (excluding A-series), with English or Japanese as the primary system language. If your phone is not eligible, Android still offers ordinary per-app and lock-screen notification controls, but not this AI summary feature.
What Android notification summaries do
Google’s AI notification summaries condense unread messages into a short account in the notification shade. A sparkle icon marks a generated summary. Expand it or tap the notification to open the complete conversation, so the summary is an overview rather than a replacement for the original messages.

Google gives Google Messages, Android Messages and WhatsApp as examples of messaging apps whose notifications can work with summaries. It does not publish a complete compatibility list on the support page, so an app’s presence on your phone does not by itself guarantee a summary.

Check eligibility before changing settings
The summary switch is not a universal Android option. Confirm these requirements first:
| Requirement | What Google documents | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Phone | Pixel 9 or later, excluding A-series devices | Earlier Pixels and eligible-looking A-series models will not show the AI summary control. |
| Primary system language | English or Japanese | The phone’s primary language, not merely an additional keyboard language, must be one of these. |
| Feature state | Off by default | You must enable Notification summaries manually. |
These are Google’s documented limits for the feature, not an independent compatibility test. Availability can also depend on software rollout and the exact device configuration.
Check the model name in Settings > About phone before troubleshooting a missing menu. A phone that looks similar to a supported model may still be an A-series device, which Google specifically excludes. Likewise, changing only your keyboard or adding a second language does not satisfy the primary-language requirement. The language selected for the system interface is the relevant setting.
There is no need to purchase an app or subscription to follow this settings walkthrough. If your current phone is outside the documented hardware range, an eligible Pixel is the hardware option to investigate, but replacing a phone is optional and should be based on your own needs. Confirm the exact model and current price with Google or an authorized retailer rather than assuming every Pixel 9-era listing supports the feature.
Turn on AI notification summaries
- Open Settings.
- Tap Notifications.
- Tap Notification summaries.
- Turn on summaries.
- Review Don’t include these apps. Select an app there only if you do not want its notifications considered for summaries.
Leave high-value conversation apps out of the exclusion list if you want their unread messages summarized. Conversely, excluding noisy or low-priority apps keeps the summary focused without disabling that app’s notifications altogether.
After switching the feature on, send or receive a few ordinary text-based messages in an enabled app and allow the phone to collect more than a single alert. A summary is intended for unread notification content, so an empty shade or a notification that you already opened may not provide anything to condense. Look for the sparkle marker rather than expecting every individual alert to be rewritten.
Use the exclusion list deliberately
Don’t include these apps is a summary filter, not an app blocker. Putting a shopping, social or automated-service app on the list leaves that app’s normal notification permission intact. You will still receive its alerts unless you separately turn those alerts off. This makes the list useful for reducing summary clutter while preserving occasional reminders you may want to see.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Conversely, removing an app from the exclusion list does not force every message to be summarized. The app must still be allowed to notify, the notification must reach the phone, and the content must meet the conditions Google describes. Use the list to control which sources are candidates, then use app-notification settings to control whether those sources can alert you at all.
Allow the components that make summaries possible
Permit Android System Intelligence to read notifications
Open Settings > Notifications > Privacy > Notification read, reply and control, then make sure Android System Intelligence is allowed. Without this permission, the on-device system component cannot process notification content for the feature.
The wording of this permission can look more powerful than the summary feature itself because it covers notification reading, replies and controls. Review the listed component carefully and enable the Android System Intelligence entry that Google identifies. If you later revoke it, the summary switch may remain visible while summaries stop appearing.
Keep the source app’s notifications enabled
An app that is blocked at the system level has no notification for the summarizer to process. On Pixel, you can manage this from Settings > Notifications > App notifications. You can also touch and hold an existing notification and tap its settings control to reach that app’s notification options. The exact labels can vary on other Android phones; Google’s general Android notification guide describes the broader controls.
Check the app’s individual notification categories as well as its main on/off switch. An app can be allowed generally while a particular conversation category is silent or blocked. If no notification is generated for that category, there is nothing available for a summary. Re-enable only the categories you actually need if you want to keep the shade manageable.

How to make summaries more useful
Choose signal over volume
Summaries are most useful when the notification shade contains a manageable set of meaningful conversations. Use Don’t include these apps to remove promotional, automated or otherwise distracting sources, while leaving the messaging apps you actually need. This changes what the summary considers; it does not unsubscribe you from the excluded app.
Start with the apps that generate the largest number of low-value alerts. Promotions and automated status messages can crowd out conversations, making a short account less useful even when it is technically working. Keep work, family or time-sensitive messaging apps enabled, then reassess the list after a day of normal use. The goal is not the fewest notifications; it is a shade where the remaining items are worth scanning.
Keep notifications readable
Google lists short alerts, mixed-language messages and emoji-only content as cases where a summary may not be generated. A message that contains enough ordinary text in one supported language gives the system more material to condense than a one-word alert or a row of emoji. The original notification remains the authority when context matters.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsA short alert may be perfectly useful on its own, so a missing summary is not necessarily a failure. For example, a one-word delivery update or an emoji reaction may not contain enough text for a meaningful account. Mixed-language threads can also fall outside the documented conditions even when individual messages are understandable. When a message includes a deadline, address, amount, appointment detail or safety instruction, open the complete thread instead of relying on the condensed wording.
Give the phone a quiet processing window
Google says the screen must be off for a moment before a summary may appear. If you are actively using the phone while messages arrive, the summary may not be produced immediately. Let the device sit briefly with the display off rather than judging the feature from an actively used screen.
This behavior explains why testing while repeatedly unlocking, replying and pulling down the shade can produce inconsistent results. Send the test message, lock the phone, wait briefly, and then check the notification shade. Treat the screen-off interval as part of the feature’s normal operating conditions rather than as a guaranteed countdown.
Keep background updates possible
Google advises turning Battery Saver off and connecting the phone to Wi‑Fi while it charges overnight. That gives the device an opportunity to download required AI updates. This is especially relevant after setup, a system update or a period in which the phone has been offline.
Battery-saving modes can be helpful during travel, but they can also restrict background work. If summaries are inconsistent after a long period on low power, restore ordinary charging and connectivity conditions before changing more settings. Overnight Wi‑Fi charging is a practical way to let pending component updates complete without watching the process.
Troubleshoot a missing or unhelpful summary
Work through the checks in this order. Stop when the symptom is explained; changing unrelated notification settings can make diagnosis harder.
1. The Notification summaries menu is missing
Start with the eligibility table above: verify the exact model is a Pixel 9 or later and not an A-series device, and verify that English or Japanese is the primary system language. If either condition is not met, the documented AI feature is unavailable on that phone or language configuration.
Do not substitute a generic Android notification menu for the missing feature. Android’s ordinary notification controls are available on many devices, but they do not create Google’s AI summaries. If you changed the system language recently, restart your eligibility check with the language used for the phone interface, not the language of an individual app or keyboard.

- Gemini AI Integration: Built-in Gemini AI assistant supercharges your productivity and creativity, helping you accomplish tasks faster, generate content, and unlock new possibilities right from your smartphone without needing additional apps or subscriptions
Check one app at a time so you know which change helped. Start with a messaging app named in Google’s examples, such as Google Messages, Android Messages or WhatsApp, while remembering that Google does not promise a complete compatibility list. If that app produces a summary but another does not, the difference may be app-specific rather than a phone-wide permission problem.
3. Only some messages produce summaries
This can be expected behavior rather than a fault. Short alerts, messages that mix languages, and emoji-only notifications may not generate one. A summary also may not appear while the phone is being used; turn the screen off briefly and check the shade again.
Compare the content and timing of a summarized thread with one that was skipped. If the skipped alert is very short or mostly emoji, it matches Google’s listed conditions. If both messages are ordinary text, verify that the app is enabled and that Android System Intelligence remains allowed before drawing conclusions from one missed notification.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →4. Summaries stopped after the phone was idle or offline
Check that Battery Saver is off, then connect to Wi‑Fi and charge overnight so required AI updates can download. If the problem began after a language change, recheck the primary language requirement rather than only the keyboard settings.
A phone that was offline for an extended period may need time to catch up with component updates. Leave it connected and charging overnight, then test again with the screen off. Avoid changing several permissions simultaneously, because that makes it difficult to identify whether connectivity, power restrictions or language caused the interruption.
5. Notifications themselves are late or absent
That is a broader delivery problem, not necessarily a summary problem. Google’s Pixel notification guidance notes that Do Not Disturb silences most notifications, while Battery Saver and Adaptive Battery can stop or delay some alerts. Resolve delivery first; a summarizer cannot process an alert that never reaches the phone.
Temporarily check Do Not Disturb schedules and confirm that the app is not included in a silent or restricted category. If alerts arrive only after opening the app, examine power-saving conditions before blaming the summary feature. Once ordinary notifications arrive promptly, repeat the screen-off test for summaries.

6. An app still does not summarize after all checks
Google’s help page names examples but does not provide a complete app-compatibility list. If the app is enabled, permitted to notify, and its messages meet the content conditions, the remaining limitation may be app-specific support rather than a setting you can change. Open the original notification to read the full thread when no summary is offered.
Do not infer that an unsupported app is malfunctioning simply because another messaging app works. The documented feature description establishes examples, not a guarantee for every messaging, social or business application. Keep the app enabled if its original alerts matter, and use the full notification as the dependable fallback.
Notification summaries and Notification Organizer are different
Pixel also has a separate Notification Organizer. It groups notifications into categories such as Promotions and news and Social and suggested content; it does not write a short account of unread messages. Do not treat its controls as an alternative location for the AI summary switch.
| Feature | Documented phone and language limits | Controls and behavior |
|---|---|---|
| AI notification summaries | Pixel 9 or later, excluding A-series; primary language English or Japanese | Summarizes unread message notifications; enable under Settings > Notifications > Notification summaries; app exclusions are managed in Don’t include these apps. |
| Notification Organizer | Pixel 9 or later, excluding A-series; primary language English; region set to Australia, Canada, Germany, Japan, the United Kingdom or the United States | Groups notifications into categories. Promotions and news are on by default; Social and suggested content can be enabled in Settings. |
The organizer’s regional requirement is narrower than the summary feature’s documented language requirement. A phone can therefore meet one feature’s conditions without meeting the other’s.

For example, a user with a supported Pixel and Japanese as the primary language may meet the documented language condition for AI summaries while not meeting the organizer’s English requirement. Conversely, changing the region to one of the listed countries does not make an unsupported phone eligible. Treat the two settings as separate products with separate availability rules.

What to do on a phone that is not eligible
If your device is not a Pixel 9-or-later model outside the A-series, or its primary language is not supported, Android still lets you improve notification handling without AI summaries. These controls reduce clutter and protect private content, but they do not generate an AI-written digest.
Control individual apps
On Pixel, use Settings > Notifications > App notifications to turn an app’s notifications on or off and adjust the available notification categories. Touching and holding a notification is a shortcut to the same app-level controls. Other manufacturers may place equivalent controls under a differently named Notifications or Apps menu.
Use categories instead of shutting off an entire app when you need only some alerts. For example, keep direct-message alerts enabled while silencing a less important category if the phone offers that distinction. Menu names and category choices vary by manufacturer, so follow the labels shown on your device.
Choose what appears on the lock screen
Android provides lock-screen options to show or hide notifications and to hide sensitive content. The wording and path vary by device and Android edition, so use the notification and lock-screen sections in your phone’s Settings app. Hiding sensitive content changes what is visible before unlocking; it does not summarize the message.
This is a privacy control, not an AI control. You can hide message details on the lock screen while leaving notifications available after unlocking. If a notification seems empty from the lock screen, unlock the phone and expand it before concluding that the app delivered no content.
Reduce interruptions without blocking everything
Use Do Not Disturb or app-specific notification categories when you need quiet periods, but remember that silencing an app prevents its alerts from arriving for any later summary. For delayed alerts, review Battery Saver and Adaptive Battery before assuming the summary system is at fault.
Schedule quiet periods deliberately and check whether important contacts or apps are exempted according to your needs. A quiet mode can be exactly what you want during sleep or meetings, but it also changes the input available to any later digest. Restore normal notification delivery before testing summaries again.

- Leave the screen off briefly when new messages arrive.
- Keep Battery Saver off, and use Wi‑Fi while charging overnight for AI updates.
- If alerts are missing altogether, investigate Do Not Disturb, Battery Saver and Adaptive Battery before troubleshooting summaries.
For a clean test, choose one supported-looking messaging app, send a normal text message, lock the phone and leave it on Wi‑Fi while charging. Check for the sparkle-marked notification after the screen has been off for a moment. Then test another app only after the first path works. This sequence separates eligibility and permission problems from app-specific behavior.
Limits worth keeping in mind
Google’s support documentation explains availability and controls, not an accuracy score, response-time guarantee or complete list of supported apps. Treat a sparkle-marked summary as a convenience layer: expand the notification or open the conversation before acting on details, especially when a message contains deadlines, addresses, numbers or a safety-critical instruction.
A summary can help you decide which thread deserves attention, but the notification and the conversation remain the authoritative records. If a summary seems incomplete, contradictory or too vague, do not try to fix it by changing unrelated phone settings; open the source message and verify the details there.
