To add materia slots to a weapon in Final Fantasy VII Remake, open that weapon’s upgrade screen and spend SP on a slot-related upgrade in its core tree. Weapon upgrades use SP; materia levels through AP earned in battles. If by “weapon AP” you mean progress toward stronger weapons, you are looking for SP—not materia AP.
SP and AP do different jobs
There are two progression systems to keep straight. SP is spent in weapon upgrade trees to unlock weapon benefits, which can include additional materia slots. AP is earned by equipped materia in battles and raises that materia’s level. Spending one does not substitute for the other: AP does not unlock weapon-core upgrades, and SP does not level materia.

This distinction answers two common questions that can sound like one: “How do I get more materia slots on my weapon?” and “How do I farm AP fast?” The first is about choosing a weapon-core upgrade and paying for it with SP. The second is about equipping the materia you want to develop and earning AP in battles. You do not need to farm AP to open a weapon slot, and collecting SP will not advance a materia’s level.
Weapons have separate upgrade trees. A slot upgrade belongs to the weapon whose tree you purchased it in; do not assume that buying a slot on one weapon adds a slot to another. The official Square Enix systems page describes strengthening weapons by unlocking abilities in their cores, while GameSpot and GameWith describe spending SP on weapon-specific upgrades. GameSpot’s weapon guide, credited to Matt Espineli, Phil Hornshaw, and Nick Sherman, was published April 28, 2020; GameWith’s guide was last updated August 21, 2022.

That weapon-by-weapon structure is important when deciding where to invest. A character may have more than one weapon available, but the benefit shown in a weapon’s core is associated with that weapon. Before spending SP, make sure the selected weapon is the one you mean to improve. If your goal is a particular loadout, begin with the weapon you expect to equip for it rather than buying an upgrade elsewhere and expecting the slot to carry across.
How to unlock more slots on a weapon
- Open the weapon-upgrade screen. Select the character and the particular weapon you want to improve, then inspect that weapon’s core tree.
- Look for an available slot-related node. Upgrade choices and their order can differ between weapons. Check the selected weapon’s tree rather than assuming a slot purchase will be available on every weapon at the same point.
- Spend SP on the node. Weapon-core upgrades require SP. If the slot node is not available, continue earning SP and inspect the tree again as additional upgrades become available.
- Check the resulting loadout. Return to the Materia & Equipment screen and examine the weapon’s actual materia slots. Count slots and note whether any are linked; an extra slot and a linked pair are not the same thing.
- Repeat for other weapons only if you want their upgrades. Each weapon has its own tree, so review the weapon currently equipped before investing SP.
Do not treat a weapon’s tree as a universal menu of identical upgrades. The sources describe separate trees and weapon-specific upgrades, and the order of available choices can differ. Use the information shown for the selected weapon instead of following a remembered sequence from another weapon or assuming that a slot-related choice appears at the same stage for every character.
There is no single SP price to quote for every added slot based on the guides cited here. The practical check is the upgrade node in the tree: it tells you what is available for that weapon and whether you can purchase it with your current SP. If you cannot select the node, keep progressing and check again when you have more SP or more options are available. Avoid spending on the assumption that a purchase will unlock a particular slot on a different weapon.

Square Enix confirms that materia can be equipped in both weapons and armor. Its description of core-based growth concerns weapons; the sources reviewed do not describe armor slots as something you add through that weapon-upgrade system. Treat armor’s slots as an equipment property and inspect the armor in the equipment screen rather than looking for an armor core tree. Changing weapons and changing armor are therefore separate checks: review each piece’s actual materia layout in Materia & Equipment.
Extra slots, linked slots, and choosing a weapon
More slots provide more places to equip materia, but the layout matters as well as the total. Linked slots let paired materia interact to alter effects, as Square Enix’s system explanation notes. A weapon with fewer slots but a useful linked pair may suit a particular setup better than one with a higher raw slot count. Check the layout shown for the actual weapon instead of judging it by a number alone.
In practice, first decide what you need the weapon to do. If your priority is fitting several separate materia, total slot count is an obvious consideration. If you want a combination that depends on materia working together, inspect whether the relevant slots are linked. A higher slot count by itself does not tell you whether the arrangement supports the combination you have in mind. Likewise, the existence of linked slots is not an extra upgrade currency or an AP bonus; it describes how paired materia can interact.
There is no universally best weapon established by the cited guides. Compare the options using the needs of the character and the setup you plan to use:
Rank #2
- Immerse yourself in the city of Midgar like never before, with improved textures, lighting, and background environments
- Players can switch between two game modes: o "Graphics Mode" prioritises 4K high-resolution graphics o "Performance Mode" prioritises smooth action at 60 frames per second
- Capture and share your memorable moments from the game with a fully customisable “Photo Mode”
- Players can enjoy immersive battles by using the DualSense PlayStation 5 controller with its haptic feedback integration
- Slot count and links: Check how many materia fit and whether the links support the combination you want.
- Combat profile: Compare the weapon’s attack, magic, and defensive profile rather than assuming the weapon with more slots is always stronger.
- Core upgrades: Inspect the benefits available in that particular weapon’s tree and the SP required for the upgrades you value.
- Ability and play style: Consider the weapon ability and whether it suits how you use that character. A weapon’s unlocked stats and benefits apply when that weapon is equipped, according to GameSpot’s upgrade guide.
These are trade-offs, not a ranking: the right choice depends on whether your priority is a specific materia arrangement, a weapon profile, its core benefits, or its ability. One reliable comparison method is to inspect each candidate weapon in turn, note its materia layout and the upgrades offered in its tree, then compare those details with the role you want the weapon to serve. Do not compare a weapon’s unlocked benefits as though they automatically remain active when another weapon is equipped; GameSpot’s guide says those stats and benefits apply while the relevant weapon is equipped.
If you are unsure where to spend SP, avoid treating the highest slot count as the only useful outcome. A slot upgrade is valuable when it supports the materia setup you want, but a weapon’s other core benefits, combat profile, and ability can also matter. Conversely, an impressive attack or magic profile does not answer whether the weapon has the linked layout you need. Check the actual options rather than relying on a universal tier list; these sources do not establish a single best choice for every character or situation.
How to earn AP for materia
Equip the materia you want to develop before fighting. It earns AP through battles, and accumulated AP raises its level. If a materia is not equipped, do not expect it to progress from the fight. Check its progress after battles to confirm that the materia you care about is in the loadout.
This makes the basic AP routine straightforward: identify the materia whose level matters to you, put it in a slot on the weapon or armor you are using, and then take part in battles. Because materia can be equipped in both weapon and armor slots, review the full loadout rather than checking only the weapon. If you are preparing a different setup for a fight, make sure the materia you intend to train remains equipped after you change equipment.
AP belongs to the equipped materia, not to a weapon’s core tree. A battle can be relevant to materia development because AP is earned through battles, but that does not mean the weapon gains a slot from AP. For a new slot, return to the weapon tree and use SP; for a materia level, check that the materia is equipped and let it earn AP. Keeping those goals distinct avoids spending time pursuing the wrong progression system.
A Game8 search-result excerpt reports a 3× AP bonus after clearing the main story and says equipment does not increase AP growth in the base game. The underlying page was not accessible for verification, so treat both details as version-sensitive claims rather than settled rules for every edition or release. The excerpt does not establish a best repeatable farming route or an AP-stacking rule. Check the behavior in your version before planning around that multiplier; no specific route or stacking method is supported here.
In particular, do not assume that the reported post-clear multiplier applies before finishing the story, carries across every version, or combines with another bonus in a particular way. The Game8 excerpt supports mentioning the reported 3× post-clear bonus, but it does not settle its full scope or how to stack it. If you are playing the base game or an Intergrade presentation, verify the in-game behavior in that release rather than building a long farming plan around an unconfirmed rule.
Rank #3
- Immerse yourself in the city of Midgar like never before, with improved textures, lighting, and background environments
- Players can Switch between two game modes:- "graphics mode" Prioritises 4K high-resolution graphics & - "performance mode" Prioritises smooth action at 60 frames per second
- Capture and share your memorable moments from the game with a fully customisable "Photo mode"
- Players can enjoy immersive battles by using the dual sense PlayStation 5 controller with its haptic feedback integration
The same caution applies to the equipment claim. The excerpt says equipment does not increase AP growth in the base game, but it is not a verified comparison of every release or version. It does not support naming a particular item, battle, chapter, or repeatable route as the fastest way to gain AP. The dependable advice supported here is narrower: equip the materia you want to grow, earn AP through battles, and check the result in your game.

How to earn SP and find more weapon upgrades
SP is the resource for weapon trees. Manuscripts award additional SP; they are not materia AP items. GameSpot’s manuscript guide, published April 28, 2020, says most manuscripts are obtained in Hard Mode, which is available after finishing the story through Chapter Select.
The guide identifies early examples in the Moogle Emporium and in Chapter 9 and Chapter 14 Coliseum and side-quest content. It also describes many later manuscript rewards from Hard Mode bosses and side quests. These are examples, not a complete location list: use them to understand the kinds of activities that can award SP, and consult the in-game chapter and quest information when pursuing a specific reward. If you are still completing the story, focus first on available weapon upgrades; the larger set of manuscript opportunities is associated with post-story and Hard Mode play.
The useful progression distinction is timing. You can use SP for weapon upgrades as you progress, while the cited guide connects many manuscript rewards with Hard Mode and post-story Chapter Select. If you have completed the story and want additional weapon upgrades, manuscripts are one route to more SP. If you have not reached that point, do not assume every manuscript opportunity is already available or that you need to begin with Hard Mode just to understand the weapon tree.
When you find a manuscript, think of its reward as weapon-upgrade currency. It does not give materia AP, and equipping it is not the method for leveling a materia. Likewise, fighting to raise materia AP does not replace the manuscript route for earning the extra SP described by GameSpot. Keep a simple distinction in mind when planning: weapon tree node means SP; materia progress means AP; manuscript means additional SP.
The cited examples are useful starting points, but they should not be mistaken for a complete checklist. The guide mentions the Moogle Emporium and Chapter 9 and Chapter 14 Coliseum and side-quest content, then describes many Hard Mode boss and side-quest rewards. For a particular missing manuscript, use chapter and quest information in the game and confirm the specific reward rather than assuming every boss, quest, or Coliseum activity awards one. No complete location-by-location list is established here.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common mix-ups to avoid
- Looking for AP in the weapon tree: The tree uses SP. Materia AP is earned through battles.
- Expecting one weapon’s slot purchase to carry over: Trees are weapon-specific, so check each weapon separately.
- Counting linked slots as a different upgrade currency: Links describe how equipped materia can interact; slot-related core upgrades are still purchased with SP.
- Searching for an armor core tree: The documented core-upgrade system is for weapons. Inspect armor’s existing layout in the equipment screen.
- Assuming a post-clear AP claim applies everywhere: The reported multiplier comes from an excerpt that could not be fully checked. Its scope and stacking behavior are not established for every version.
- Expecting every weapon to offer the same slot upgrade at the same time: Upgrade choices and order can differ. Inspect the core tree for the particular weapon you selected.
- Treating manuscripts as AP items: They award SP for weapon upgrades, while equipped materia earns AP in battles.
- Choosing a weapon by slot count alone: Consider the layout, links, combat profile, core benefits, and ability as well.
Scope and version
This guidance is about Final Fantasy VII Remake, including its Intergrade presentation. It is not a guide to Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, the 1997 original, or Crisis Core. The AP multiplier detail is less firmly established than the weapon-SP and materia-AP distinction, so verify it in the release you are playing.

The core advice is the distinction between the two systems: weapon-specific core upgrades use SP, while equipped materia earns AP through battles and levels up with it. The cited GameSpot weapon and manuscript guides are dated April 28, 2020; GameWith’s guide was last updated August 21, 2022. Square Enix’s official systems page explains weapon cores and materia in equipment. For the AP multiplier claim, Game8 is the named guide behind the available search excerpt, but its underlying page could not be checked, so that claim should remain qualified.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get more materia slots on a weapon in Final Fantasy VII Remake?
Open the weapon-upgrade screen, select the specific weapon, and inspect its core tree for a slot-related upgrade. Purchase an available node with SP. Each weapon has its own tree, so a slot upgrade on one weapon does not automatically add a slot to another.
Do I use AP or SP to unlock weapon slots?
Use SP for weapon-core upgrades, including slot-related upgrades. AP is earned by materia equipped during battles and raises materia levels; it does not unlock weapon slots.
Can I add materia slots to armor with SP?
The core-upgrade system described by Square Enix concerns weapons, not armor. Materia can be equipped in armor as well as weapons, so inspect the armor’s layout in Materia & Equipment, but do not look for a weapon-style armor core tree.
How do I level materia and is there a confirmed fastest AP farm?
Equip the materia you want to level before battles so it can earn AP. A Game8 search excerpt reports a 3× AP bonus after clearing the main story, but the guide page could not be checked and does not establish a repeatable fastest route or stacking rules. Verify the claim in your version.
Where do manuscripts come from, and do they give AP?
Manuscripts award SP for weapon upgrades, not AP for materia. GameSpot’s April 28, 2020 guide gives examples involving the Moogle Emporium, Chapter 9 and Chapter 14 Coliseum and side-quest content, and many Hard Mode boss and side-quest rewards. It says most manuscripts are obtained in Hard Mode, available after finishing the story through Chapter Select.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

No universal best weapon is established by the cited guides. Compare total slots and links alongside attack, magic, and defensive profile, available core benefits, and the weapon ability that suits your play style.
The Bottom Line
For more weapon slots, inspect that weapon’s core tree and spend SP on an available slot-related upgrade. For materia levels, equip the materia you want to grow and earn AP in battles. Manuscripts add SP, not AP; check the game version before relying on the reported post-story 3× AP bonus.
