To maximize an air conditioner, improve airflow, control runtime, keep heat out, and maintain the equipment without attempting unsafe repairs. The right steps depend on whether you have central HVAC or a room unit, so the guide below identifies where advice differs.
These measures improve comfort and can reduce energy use, but no percentage or dollar result is guaranteed. Climate, utility rates, equipment condition, insulation, and how you operate the system all affect the outcome.

Central HVAC and room AC need different strategies
Central air conditions multiple rooms through supply ducts and return grilles, usually with a separate thermostat. A window or portable unit conditions one room and generally uses controls built into the appliance or its remote. That difference changes what you should inspect and adjust.
| Concern | Central HVAC | Window or portable AC |
|---|---|---|
| Controls | Wall thermostat; programmable or smart models may be compatible | Unit controls or remote; a household thermostat may not control it |
| Air path | Return and supply ducts, indoor coil, and outdoor equipment | Room-side intake and discharge through the appliance |
| Sealing target | Duct joints and insulation, especially in unconditioned spaces | Window opening, panels, hoses, and supplied insulation |
| Capacity choice | Whole-home load calculation and equipment design | Room area adjusted for sun, shade, occupants, and kitchen heat |
| Seasonal care | Professional service and outdoor-unit protection as appropriate | Removable units may need cleaning, covering, or storage |
Use the central-system steps only when you actually have ducts and a central outdoor unit. Apply room-unit sizing and installation guidance to window or portable models.

1. Clean or replace the filter on schedule
A loaded filter restricts airflow. The system then has to work harder to move the same amount of conditioned air. ENERGY STAR advises checking filters monthly during heavy-use periods and replacing them when dirty; its general guidance is to replace a filter at least every three months. The correct interval can be shorter for pets, construction dust, smoke, or heavy occupancy.
Use the filter size, type, and installation direction specified by the equipment maker. Do not choose a universal MERV rating or force a thicker filter into a slot that was not designed for it. For a room unit, follow the appliance manual for removing and washing or replacing its filter.
The U.S. Department of Energy’s 2016 HomeCooling101 guidance says routine filter cleaning or replacement can lower an air conditioner’s energy consumption by 5–15 percent. That is an agency estimate, not a promise for every home.
2. Set the temperature for comfort, not maximum cold
Lowering the setpoint does not make an air conditioner cool faster; it makes the equipment run longer. Set cooling only as low as needed, and raise the setting when the home is empty if your equipment and household needs allow it. ENERGY STAR’s room-AC guidance says to set the thermostat as high as is comfortable, typically 78°F. Treat that as a starting point rather than a medical or universal comfort requirement.
Close doors to rooms you are intentionally not conditioning only if doing so does not block a required return-air path or create pressure problems. If a central system cannot maintain the selected temperature, investigate airflow, filters, duct losses, insulation, or equipment faults instead of continually selecting a colder setting.
3. Add scheduling only with compatible controls
A programmable or smart thermostat can reduce runtime during predictable absences and sleeping hours, but compatibility is equipment-specific. Verify the wiring, power requirements, heat-pump or multi-stage functions, and manufacturer instructions before replacing a central thermostat. A room AC generally uses its own timer, thermostat, or remote; a wall smart thermostat will not automatically control it.

ENERGY STAR estimates that homes with high heating and cooling bills or that are unoccupied much of the day may save approximately $100 per year with a certified smart thermostat. That is a program estimate, and actual savings vary with schedule, climate, rates, and existing controls. Program gradual changes that preserve comfort rather than making large swings that trigger long recovery runs.

4. Keep supply vents and return grilles clear
Furniture, rugs, curtains, and storage boxes can obstruct the air path. Keep supply registers open and leave the return grille unobstructed so air can circulate back to the indoor unit. Vacuum visible dust from grilles when the system is off, but do not remove panels or reach into moving or electrical parts.
Persistent weak airflow, a room that never reaches the setpoint, or whistling at a grille deserves diagnosis. A colder thermostat setting is not a substitute for correcting a blocked return, crushed duct, dirty coil, or failing blower.
5. Seal and insulate central-system ducts
Leaky or poorly insulated ducts can lose conditioned air before it reaches the rooms. Prioritize ducts in attics, crawlspaces, garages, and unheated basements. A qualified technician can inspect joints, plenums, insulation, and access points and use approved sealing materials; ordinary cloth duct tape is not a durable fix for many duct systems.
ENERGY STAR says sealing and insulating ducts can improve heating and cooling system efficiency by as much as 20 percent, and sometimes more. This describes potential system-efficiency improvement, not a guaranteed 20-percent reduction in a utility bill. The result depends on how leaky and exposed the ducts were before work.

6. Block direct sun before it heats the room
Solar gain through glass can force the air conditioner to remove heat that could have been prevented. Close blinds, shades, or drapes on sun-facing windows during the hottest part of the day, and use exterior shading where practical. Keep window coverings arranged so they do not block central supply registers or the intake and discharge openings of a room unit.

Shading works best alongside reasonable thermostat settings and air sealing. It does not replace insulation or repair a failing system, but it can reduce the peak cooling load when sunlight is strongest.
7. Use fans for people, not empty rooms
A ceiling fan or room fan creates an evaporative and convective cooling effect on skin. The U.S. Department of Energy says a ceiling fan can allow occupants to raise the thermostat by about 4°F without affecting comfort. Set the fan direction and speed for the season according to its instructions, and use it only where people are present.
DOE’s HomeCooling101 guidance puts the operating rule plainly: “Turn off your fans when you leave the room — fans cool people, not rooms.” A fan left running in an empty room adds electricity use without lowering the room’s actual temperature.

For a window or portable unit, start with the manufacturer’s or ENERGY STAR room-area sizing table, then adjust for conditions. Strong sun, unusually shaded rooms, more occupants than normal, and heat from cooking can change the required capacity. A qualified load assessment is preferable when the room is difficult to characterize.
An oversized unit may reach its temperature target quickly but cycle off before removing enough moisture, leaving the room cool and clammy. An undersized unit may run continuously without reaching comfort. Capacity is therefore a comfort and humidity decision, not just a number on the carton.
Adjustment factors to check
- Room area and ceiling height.
- Direct afternoon sun versus substantial shade.
- Typical number of occupants.
- Heat-producing appliances, especially a kitchen.
- Whether adjoining spaces are open to the room being cooled.
9. Install a window unit with a tight, level fit
Follow the supplied mounting brackets, side-panel insulation, and weather-sealing instructions. Keep the unit level in the orientation specified by the manual so condensate drains correctly and the chassis is supported. Seal gaps around the sash and panels; an opening that leaks outdoor air undermines the cooling you paid for.

Keep lamps, televisions, and other heat sources away from the unit’s thermostat. Their heat can make the control sense a warmer room and run the compressor longer than necessary. Never defeat a safety bracket or improvise support for a heavy window appliance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor portable units, route the exhaust hose exactly as the manufacturer specifies and seal the window adapter. Avoid kinks and unnecessary hose length that restricts exhaust airflow.
10. Keep outdoor parts and drains clear
For a split central system, remove leaves, grass clippings, and other debris around the outdoor condenser while power is off and the area is safe to access. Maintain the clearance specified by the manufacturer so air can enter and leave the coil. Check accessible condensate drain channels for standing water or blockage, and look for signs of overflow near the indoor equipment.
Basic homeowner care stops at cleaning, visual inspection, and clearing safe obstructions. Do not open electrical compartments, handle refrigerant, or attempt to recharge a system. Refrigerant leaks and recharging require trained service personnel, and electrical work can cause shock, fire, or equipment damage.
11. Book annual maintenance and use a professional when needed
ENERGY STAR recommends yearly system maintenance. A service visit can include inspection of electrical connections, controls, coils, blower operation, condensate handling, refrigerant performance, and safety components. The technician should also identify airflow or duct problems that a filter change cannot solve.

A maintenance rhythm that prevents avoidable loss
| When | Action | Applies to |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly during heavy use | Inspect the filter and replace or clean it when dirty | Central and room units, using the applicable manual |
| Every three months at minimum | Replace a central-system filter if it has not already become dirty | Central HVAC; shorter intervals may be needed |
| Before the cooling season | Clear safe debris, check airflow paths, inspect window seals, and test controls | Both types, with different access points |
| Once each year | Schedule professional maintenance for central equipment or whenever the manual requires it | Especially central HVAC and heavily used systems |
| At end of season | Clean and protect or store removable room units as directed | Window and portable units |
How can I make my air conditioner more efficient?
Start with the actions that remove restrictions and unnecessary runtime: a clean, correctly specified filter; unobstructed vents and returns; sensible setpoints and schedules; shade; and fans used only while people are present. Central-system owners should then address duct leakage and insulation, while room-AC owners should verify capacity and seal the installation.
Track comfort, runtime, and humidity after each change rather than assuming a published percentage applies to your bill. If performance remains poor, maintenance or repair is more effective—and safer—than repeatedly lowering the thermostat.
