How to Get More Armor and Clothing Options in Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen

To expand your wardrobe in Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen, use four routes: advance the main story and revisit merchants, check Mountebank at the Black Cat for special clothing and armor copies, claim the bonus inventory available in your edition, and explore Bitterblack Isle for late-game equipment. The first three routes can improve your appearance without immediately taking on the game’s hardest content; Bitterblack Isle is the advanced route for stronger gear and rare armor.

Armor is not purely cosmetic in Dark Arisen. Every replacement changes protection, weight, and often vocation requirements, so the best-looking set may not be the best combat choice. The practical approach is to collect appearance options through ordinary shops and the Black Cat, then use Bitterblack equipment when you are ready to trade preparation and risk for higher-end upgrades.

Route When it becomes useful Main purpose How you obtain items Preparation and risk
Story progression and normal merchants Throughout the main story More everyday armor, clothing, and upgrades Advance the story, then revisit shops Low risk; stock is tied to progression
Black Cat and Mountebank Once you can reach the Black Cat Special clothing and armor copies, including some former DLC-style pieces Purchase from Mountebank; item-specific restrictions apply Low combat risk; requires enough gold and the correct item conditions
Edition bonus inventory Depends on platform and release Extra outfits and armor supplied with a particular edition Claim the listed rewards under that edition’s unlock rules Usually low risk, but availability is not universal across platforms
Bitterblack Isle and Barroch After access to the Isle; best treated as post-game content Advanced equipment and services Buy from Barroch and unlock additional stock on the Isle High risk; the area is considerably more demanding than ordinary shops
Cursed Bitterblack armor During Bitterblack Isle exploration Late-game armor with potentially powerful bonuses Find cursed items in Isle chests or from monsters, then purify them High risk and variable results; Level 3 armor can reveal bonus enhancements

There is no single universally best outfit. A player focused on appearance may accept lower defenses or a different weight, while a player preparing for difficult fights may prioritize protection and enhancements. Treat the routes as a collection system rather than a race to one “correct” set.

Advance the main story, then check merchants again

Merchant inventories are not permanently fixed at the point where you first meet a vendor. General game references describe shop stock expanding at story-progression stages. An early visit can therefore give a misleading impression that a shop has very few choices.

A reliable shopping cycle

  1. Reach the next meaningful story stage. Complete the required main-quest progress instead of repeatedly checking the same shop immediately after a purchase.
  2. Return to merchants you have already visited. Vendors can add equipment as progression advances, so revisit earlier locations rather than assuming only the newest shop matters.
  3. Compare the full equipment screen. Look at armor slot, defense, weight, vocation compatibility, and appearance. A new item may be a visual alternative rather than a straight statistical upgrade.
  4. Keep a small appearance wardrobe. Store pieces that fit a preferred look even if they are not your strongest combat items. You can then change your presentation without having to rediscover the item later.

Do not assume that reaching one named quest guarantees one named item. Individual pieces can have their own unlock conditions, and the general rule that stock expands with story progress does not identify every item’s exact stage.

Why this route is best early in a playthrough

  • You can shop without committing to a difficult optional area.
  • Story progress naturally unlocks more locations, rewards, and spending opportunities.
  • Normal merchants are the safest way to replace worn equipment while learning your vocation.
  • It gives you a baseline for deciding whether a Black Cat copy or Bitterblack item is actually an improvement.

Use the Black Cat for special copies

The Black Cat is the specialist stop for unusual armor and clothing. Mountebank sells copies of certain pieces, including some items that originated as downloadable-content-style rewards. This makes the shop particularly useful when your goal is to change your character’s look rather than simply buy the next ordinary armor tier.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to shop at Mountebank

  1. Travel to the Black Cat. Make sure you have enough gold before starting a shopping trip; special copies are not a free appearance-change service.
  2. Speak with Mountebank and inspect the armor and clothing categories. Check every relevant slot rather than looking only for a complete set. A single chest piece, head item, or clothing layer can change the overall silhouette.
  3. Read the item information before buying. Confirm vocation compatibility, weight, defenses, and any restriction shown for that item.
  4. Buy one copy first when uncertain. Test the appearance and equipment combination before spending on a full visual theme.
  5. Return after meeting new conditions. Mountebank’s exact stock and restrictions vary by item and by save or version, so a missing piece may require additional progression rather than indicating a bug.

The Black Cat is not a guarantee that every previous promotional or downloadable item is available in every release. Treat its inventory as item-specific. If a piece is absent, verify that your character has met the relevant condition for that item and that your platform edition supports it.

Appearance copies versus combat gear

A copy purchased for its look still occupies an equipment slot and has its own weight and statistics. Before replacing a battle-tested item, compare the numbers on the status screen. If your priority is fashion, you can accept the trade-off; if you are entering a difficult quest, keep a defensive set available and use the Black Cat purchase when the situation allows.

Claim the bonus inventory included with your edition

Bonus clothing and armor are another source of variety, but their availability depends on the release. The Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen GOG FAQ describes its own package and unlock rules; those details should not be treated as a universal table for every console or PC version.

Items named in the GOG FAQ

The FAQ specifically lists the following among the bonus armor and clothing that become available after completing the first escort quest and reaching Gran Soren:

  • Set of Fop’s Trek Wear
  • Voldoan Armor
  • Priest Vestments
  • Lady’s Trek Wear
  • Queen’s Clothing
  • Nun Vestments

The same FAQ says that several other bonus pieces are available immediately in that release. Because it does not establish a cross-platform unlock table for every item, use the in-game inventory and your edition’s documentation to determine which pieces should be present in your copy.

What Dark Arisen includes

Capcom’s DLC guidance dated May 1, 2013, states that the original Dragon’s Dogma downloadable-content items are included in the Dark Arisen package. You do not need to repurchase those original items through a console store simply to obtain their clothing or armor. Capcom also says that if an included item disappears, it can be reacquired at the Black Cat without buying it again.

That guidance is edition information rather than a promise about current marketplace listings. If you are checking a modern storefront, confirm that you are buying Dark Arisen itself and the intended platform edition, not assuming that a separate DLC listing is required.

Important release differences

  • The GOG FAQ describes its release as a complete package containing previously released console DLC.
  • That FAQ says Berserk armor and weapons are not included because of licensing restrictions.
  • It also states that its version has no Rift Crystal microtransactions.
  • Those statements apply to the release covered by the FAQ and should not be generalized automatically to every current console release.

Reach Bitterblack Isle when you are ready

Bitterblack Isle is the main advanced route for additional equipment. Barroch sells gear and provides services at various locations on the Isle, with more of his stock becoming available as conditions there are met. The Isle also contains cursed Bitterblack armor in chests and monster drops; purification reveals the resulting equipment, and Level 3 armor can carry bonus enhancements.

  1. Complete the early Encampment quest. This is the first progression requirement in the FAQ’s access instructions.
  2. Create your main pawn. Bitterblack Isle access is not presented as an opening-area feature before this step.
  3. Return to Cassardis at night. The timing matters for the encounter described in the FAQ.
  4. Follow the purple mini-map marker to the dock.
  5. Speak with Olra. This begins the route to the Isle.

The same FAQ advises beating the main story first because Bitterblack Isle is considered post-game content. You can technically investigate access once the stated prerequisites are met, but “available” does not mean “safe for a new character.” Treat the recommendation as a preparation warning, not as a mandatory software lockout.

What to prepare before entering

  • Bring a combat set that is substantially better than your starter equipment.
  • Carry healing and curative supplies appropriate for a long expedition.
  • Leave inventory space for unidentified or cursed finds.
  • Keep enough gold for Barroch’s purchases and services.
  • Make a backup save strategy for valuable equipment decisions if your platform and play habits support one.
  • Expect encounters that are more dangerous than ordinary shopping areas; do not use the Isle as your first answer to a basic clothing shortage.

Buy from Barroch and purify cursed armor

Barroch is the Isle’s dedicated equipment and service provider. His stock expands as you satisfy conditions on Bitterblack Isle, so an initial visit is not necessarily the end of the shopping route. Check back after exploring and progressing through the area rather than assuming the first inventory is final.

How cursed armor works as a collection route

  1. Explore Bitterblack Isle. Search chests and defeat monsters that can drop cursed Bitterblack armor.
  2. Collect the cursed item even when its final properties are unknown. The item is a source of potential equipment, not a finished piece to evaluate solely from its initial label.
  3. Use the Isle’s purification service. Purification reveals the equipment produced from the cursed item.
  4. Inspect the revealed armor. Compare its defenses, weight, vocation fit, and any enhancements with what you already use.
  5. Keep or replace based on your build. A high-level piece can be valuable without matching the appearance or weight you want.

Level 3 Bitterblack armor can carry bonus enhancements, which is one reason the Isle remains relevant after ordinary merchants stop offering meaningful upgrades. The result is not a guarantee of a specific bonus, so treat each find as an item to identify and evaluate rather than a promised best-in-slot reward.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Barroch’s role versus ordinary shops

Ordinary merchants are predictable, low-risk sources that improve with story progression. Barroch’s route is more specialized: his services and inventory are tied to Bitterblack Isle conditions, and the surrounding area is dangerous. Use ordinary shops and the Black Cat for wardrobe building; use Barroch and cursed armor when you are deliberately pursuing late-game strength, enhancements, or rare equipment.

Choose clothing by appearance, stats, and weight

A character who “still looks like an NPC” may be asking for a visual solution, while another player may actually need stronger protection. Separate those goals before replacing equipment.

Your priority Best first stop What to check
More visual variety early Story-progressed merchants New stock after each major progression stage; weight and vocation fit
Distinctive or unusual outfits Black Cat Copy availability, item restrictions, price, and slot compatibility
Included bonus clothing Your edition’s reward inventory Platform-specific unlock rules and whether the item is actually included
Maximum late-game potential Bitterblack Isle and Barroch Preparation, purification results, enhancements, and combat risk
Balanced appearance and performance Mix sources Keep a combat set and a preferred-look set, then switch according to the activity

Weight matters as much as defense

Two outfits can offer similar protection while producing different encumbrance. A visually appealing set that pushes your character into a heavier load may change stamina management and travel comfort. Compare total carried weight after equipping a complete look, not just the weight of one attractive piece.

Vocation and slot compatibility

Some items are restricted by vocation or equipment slot. A set that works for one Arisen or pawn may not be usable by another. When planning a coordinated appearance, start with the pieces your vocation can equip, then fill the remaining slots instead of buying an entire theme that cannot be worn together.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Build a practical two-set wardrobe

  • Combat set: your strongest suitable defenses and enhancements for dangerous quests.
  • Appearance set: the clothing and armor combination you prefer for travel, towns, screenshots, or low-risk activities.
  • Transition pieces: a few lighter or more protective items that let you adjust one slot without dismantling the whole look.

This approach lets you pursue fashion without pretending that every attractive item is a statistical upgrade.

Troubleshoot a missing armor or clothing item

The merchant has not added new stock

  • Advance the main story farther, then return; merchant stock expands at progression stages.
  • Check whether the item has a separate unlock condition rather than relying only on general story progress.
  • Confirm that you are visiting the correct vendor. Ordinary merchants, Mountebank, Barroch, and reward inventories are different sources.

A Black Cat item is absent

  • Verify the item’s individual restriction and your current save progression.
  • Confirm that your edition supports the item; former DLC-style content is not identical across every release.
  • If an included original item disappeared, revisit the Black Cat. Capcom’s Dark Arisen guidance says included items can be reacquired there without buying them again.

A bonus reward does not appear

  • Check your platform and edition before comparing your inventory with a different release.
  • For the GOG FAQ’s listed rewards, complete the first escort quest and reach Gran Soren.
  • Do not assume a console unlock schedule matches the GOG FAQ’s schedule.

You cannot reach Bitterblack Isle

  1. Confirm that the early Encampment quest is complete.
  2. Confirm that your main pawn has been created.
  3. Return to Cassardis at night.
  4. Look for the purple mini-map marker at the dock and speak with Olra.

If all four conditions are met and the route still does not appear, check that you are following the sequence for your edition and that you have not mistaken another dock or quest marker for the Bitterblack Isle encounter.

Bitterblack armor seems worse than expected

Cursed armor is not evaluated until it is purified, and even a purified item may not fit your vocation, weight limit, appearance preference, or current build. Keep the piece until you have inspected its revealed properties, then compare it directly with your existing equipment. A Level 3 piece can have bonus enhancements, but that possibility does not make every result an automatic replacement.

A low-risk plan for expanding your wardrobe

  1. Start with normal merchants. Buy only what improves your current combat needs or gives you a look you genuinely want.
  2. Revisit after story milestones. Check older shops again whenever the main quest advances.
  3. Visit the Black Cat. Look for special copies and reacquisition options for included items.
  4. Claim edition-specific rewards. Use the unlock rules for your platform, not a list from another release.
  5. Finish the main story before treating Bitterblack Isle as a shopping destination. The GOG FAQ explicitly recommends this because the Isle is post-game content.
  6. Use Barroch and purification for late-game upgrades. Explore only when your character is prepared for the area’s difficulty.
  7. Maintain separate appearance and combat options. This preserves your preferred style without sacrificing preparation for hard fights.

What to remember

More armor and clothing in Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen comes from progression, not one hidden wardrobe menu. Story advancement expands ordinary shops; Mountebank at the Black Cat provides special copies; edition bonuses add release-specific outfits; and Bitterblack Isle supplies Barroch’s advanced stock plus cursed armor that must be purified. Check the source and conditions for each item, keep weight and vocation in view, and postpone the Isle until your character can handle post-game difficulty.
