For a clearer ChatGPT clothing try-on preview, start with a clear photo, choose an eligible product listing’s Try on option or upload an item photo in a chat, and state exactly what you want shown. Treat the result as a visual approximation—not evidence of garment fit or the right size.
Choose a ChatGPT try-on route
ChatGPT Images supports two ways to create a clothing or accessory preview, according to OpenAI’s Shopping with ChatGPT Search guidance.

- From a product listing: Open a clothing or accessory listing that offers the feature, select Try on, then take or upload a selfie and view the generated image.
- From a conversation: Upload a photo of the clothing or accessory and ask ChatGPT to show how it could look on you.
If you save a reference photo, OpenAI says you can manage it under Settings → Personalization → Reference photos, where it can be reused, changed, or deleted.

Use an image that is easy to interpret
OpenAI’s general image-input guidance notes that unclear images can make results less accurate. If you want ChatGPT to attend to a particular feature, annotate or highlight it before uploading; annotations can guide attention to the marked element.

This is general image-input advice, not a clothing-specific camera recipe. The official guidance does not establish a best pose, lens, lighting arrangement, or background for improving try-on accuracy.
Name the garment and the visual detail
Say which item you want to preview and what visible feature matters, such as its color or neckline. For example: “Show how this [specific clothing item] could look on me using the uploaded photo. Keep the rest of the image unchanged as much as possible. Focus on [specific visible feature, such as color or neckline]. This is only a visual preview; do not claim a size or fit.”

This is suggested wording, not a tested prompt: OpenAI documents the upload-and-request workflow and image-edit instructions, but does not report a measured improvement from this exact phrasing.

Make follow-up edits carefully
To change the generated image, describe the edit in chat. You can also use the image editor’s selection tool and identify the area you want changed, as described in OpenAI’s Images in ChatGPT guidance.

Review the whole result after an edit. The selected area may not be precise, and a change can extend beyond it, so a targeted instruction does not guarantee that everything else will remain untouched.

OpenAI explicitly cautions: “Try-on images may not represent the product or your appearance exactly and do not guarantee fit or size.” A generated preview therefore cannot tell you what size to buy or confirm how a garment will fit in real life.
