Recovery is possible only in limited cases, and nothing guarantees it. Bitcoin transfers generally can’t be pulled back by you. Your best chance is to contact the exchange or Bitcoin ATM operator you paid from, right away, and report the transaction as fraud. Then report the scam to the FBI and the FTC. This guide is US-focused. Procedures and legal options vary by country, payment method, exchange, timing and the facts of your case.
Do these things first, in this order
1. Stop paying and stop engaging
Don’t send more money for taxes, unlocking charges, release fees, tracing charges or “deposits” to withdraw profits you were shown. These are standard follow-up demands. The FBI describes recovery schemes that charge upfront and then vanish or ask for still more fees (FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center, IC3, public service announcement, August 11, 2023).

2. Contact the sending service immediately
Use the official app or website of the exchange, wallet service or ATM operator you sent from. You can also use a phone number you’ve verified independently. Tell them the transaction was fraudulent. Ask whether they can stop or reverse it and refund you. The FTC recommends this step. It is a request, not a promise. Cryptocurrency payments lack the legal protections that credit and debit card payments carry, so recovery can be hard (FTC).
3. Preserve the evidence before it disappears

- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
- The transaction ID/hash and the sending and receiving wallet addresses.
- The amount and type of cryptocurrency, plus the date and time.
- The exchange, wallet service or ATM operator used.
- The recipient’s claimed identity or business, website, app name, phone numbers, emails and social-media profiles.
- Chats, emails, receipts and screenshots, including any later contact from a “recovery” service.
The FBI specifically asks for wallet addresses, amount and type of cryptocurrency, date and time, and the transaction ID/hash.
4. Report it
- FBI IC3: file a complaint at ic3.gov. You can also contact a local FBI field office.
- FTC: report at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
- State and local law enforcement: file a report where appropriate. Your state attorney general is another route.
The CFPB advises using trusted agency websites and phone numbers rather than links or numbers sent to you. A report is important for investigations, but it isn’t a promise of repayment.

5. Lock down anything the scammer touched
If you gave out account logins, ID documents or banking details, contact that institution through its official channel and change the affected credentials. The FBI warns people not to share login or identifying information with unsolicited callers or messages, including people posing as exchange staff.
What recovery can realistically look like
The FBI says exchanges freeze accounts through their internal processes or in response to legal process. This is why the speed of your first call matters: any freeze depends on the funds still sitting somewhere a company controls. Whether that happens in your case isn’t something the official guidance can predict.

Civil litigation is a route the FBI acknowledges a victim may choose. Whether it makes sense depends on whether the scammer can be identified and reached, and on what it would cost. That is a question for a qualified attorney, and the available guidance doesn’t establish how often it succeeds.
Your options compared
| Route | What it can do | Depends on | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sending exchange or ATM operator | Review the fraud claim, possibly freeze or reverse | The operator’s policies and whether funds have moved | Low; act within hours if possible |
| IC3, FTC, state/local police | Create an official record that supports investigation | Agency investigation | Low; not a refund mechanism by itself |
| Civil attorney | Assess legal action against identifiable parties | Identifying and reaching the defendant; cost | Vet carefully; cost and success are case-specific |
| Private “recovery” firm | FBI says it cannot issue seizure orders | Nothing you can verify | High, especially if it contacted you first or wants upfront fees |
Don’t get scammed a second time
The FBI states: “Private sector recovery companies cannot issue seizure orders to recover cryptocurrency.” Fraudulent recovery businesses may demand upfront fees, go silent once paid, supply incomplete or inaccurate tracing reports, and then ask for more money. They may also falsely claim ties to law enforcement or legal services (FBI IC3, August 11, 2023).

A 2024 FBI alert describes fictitious law firms that target prior victims. They ask for personal or banking information, upfront legal fees, and payments for supposed back taxes or other fees. The FBI reported over $9.9 million in losses among crypto scam victims further exploited this way between February 2023 and February 2024 (FBI IC3, 2024).

Context on the scale of the problem
The FBI’s IC3 reported more than $2.5 billion in losses from cryptocurrency investment fraud in 2022. That figure measures reported losses in one year and one category. It says nothing about your odds of getting money back.
