What you need before collecting
- A pickaxe: A magma block mined without a pickaxe drops nothing. A wooden pickaxe or any stronger pickaxe is sufficient for the basic block drop; Silk Touch is not required.
- Protection for the route: Nether travel calls for fire and lava awareness, spare food, blocks for bridges, and a way to retreat from hostile mobs. Underwater searches need a plan for breathing, visibility, and returning to the surface.
- Inventory space: Carry enough empty slots for blocks and any drops you collect. A chest or shulker box near a safe staging area prevents a long, risky return trip.
- A recovery plan: Mark a portal, carry replacement tools, and avoid mining over open lava. The block itself is useful, but losing gear to a single misstep can make a small collection run expensive.
Route 1: Mine natural magma blocks in the Nether
The Nether is the most direct search area. Magma blocks generate in Nether deposits and as part of basalt-delta terrain, and they also appear in structures such as bastion remnants. The community reference describes Nether magma-ore features around Y=27 to Y=36, but generation attempts and replacement blocks differ between Java and Bedrock. Use that range as a search clue for the edition and version you play, not as a promise that every chunk contains an exposed, reachable vein.
Step-by-step Nether mining
- Prepare at a safe portal. Store valuables, bring a pickaxe, food, building blocks, and spare equipment, then record the portal location. A shield and ranged weapon are useful when terrain opens into a hostile area.
- Locate a deposit or basalt delta. Look for exposed magma in Nether terrain, especially around basalt-delta formations. If you use coordinates or a map, confirm that the data matches your edition; Java and Bedrock do not make identical generation attempts.
- Secure the footing first. Place nonflammable blocks around the mining area, close unexpected lava paths, and create a route back to solid ground. Do not stand directly on a magma block while working if you can mine from the side.
- Mine with the pickaxe. Break the blocks with your pickaxe and collect the drops. If a block breaks and nothing appears, check that the tool in use is actually a pickaxe rather than a shovel, axe, or bare hand.
- Stop when the risk exceeds the need. For a small build, leave an exposed pocket rather than pushing into lava or a mob-filled cavern. You can return later or use the crafting route for additional blocks.
Nether structures as secondary targets
Bastion remnants can contain magma blocks in their generated environment. Structure hunting is worthwhile when you are already exploring for other reasons, but it is not a guaranteed replacement for a deposit search. Treat a bastion as a dangerous structure expedition: hostile mobs, vertical drops, and lava can matter more than the blocks you recover.

Route 2: Search underwater Overworld features and structures
Magma blocks also generate in underwater Overworld features, including the bottoms of water aquifers. They can occur in ocean ruins, trial chambers, and some ruined portals. This route is especially useful if you have not reached the Nether or are already exploring oceans and structures. The same generation reference lists these locations, while noting that generation particulars vary by edition.
How to collect them underwater
- Choose a controlled entry point. Start near a shoreline, boat, or temporary air pocket so you have a reliable way to surface. Place visible markers if the feature is deep or visibility is poor.
- Find the magma feature or structure. Search the bottom of the water area and inspect ocean ruins, trial chambers, or ruined portals when encountered. Do not assume every structure contains a harvestable cluster.
- Manage breathing and visibility. Work in short passes unless you have dependable underwater-breathing support. Clear a small working area and keep an unobstructed route upward.
- Mine with a pickaxe. Use the pickaxe for every block you intend to collect. If the area is unstable, remove surrounding blocks only after you have secured your position.
- Exit before your resources run out. Return to the surface with the first batch instead of gambling the entire inventory on one deeper pocket.
Underwater access can be safer than a Nether expedition for a player who already has ocean equipment, but it is not automatically quicker: locating a suitable feature, dealing with water movement, and maintaining air can offset the shorter travel distance.
Route 3: Craft magma blocks from magma cream
Magma cream is the renewable-material route. Magma cubes drop magma cream, and magma cream can be crafted into magma blocks. The Magma Cream reference and Magma Cube reference document the item and its source. In the current crafting recipe, four magma cream make one magma block in a two-by-two arrangement; the recipe book will show the same arrangement in your edition.

Getting the cream
- Fight magma cubes directly: Find cubes in suitable Nether areas, keep distance from their jumps, and collect the cream they drop. This is practical for a modest number of blocks when you are already in the Nether.
- Use a magma-cube farm: A farm converts repeated cube spawns into a continuing cream supply. It requires a suitable spawning location, a safe killing and collection design, and enough construction material. Build one when your projects repeatedly consume magma blocks rather than for a one-off handful.
- Craft in batches: Return to a secure crafting area, place the cream in the recipe-book arrangement, and move the resulting blocks into storage. Keeping cream uncrafted can be useful if you also need it for another recipe.
Combat and farming are indirect acquisition methods: every block begins as a mob drop. They therefore involve more preparation than mining a visible deposit, but they can continue producing material after natural pockets near your base have been exhausted.
How to decide between mining, searching, and farming

These recommendations are practical consequences of the documented routes, not measured time trials. Your nearest safe deposit can beat a farm for one project, while a farm can win over many projects because its initial construction is reused.
Stay safe while mining and collecting
Magma blocks damage living entities that stand on top of them. In Mojang Studios’ Block of the Week: Magma, the collection advice is to sneak, use a fire-resistance potion, or wear Frost Walker boots when dealing with nearby drops. Sneaking reduces the chance of stepping onto a block while you work; it does not remove the need to handle surrounding lava, falls, and hostile mobs.

Practical safety checklist
- Approach from the side: Mine a block while standing on ordinary terrain whenever possible. Never bridge over a magma pocket without checking what lies beneath it.
- Use fire resistance for lava-heavy areas: The potion protects against fire and lava damage, but it does not make hostile mobs or fall damage harmless.
- Use Frost Walker deliberately: Frost Walker boots can help you avoid damage while moving over magma in the circumstances Mojang describes, but they are not a substitute for a secure route.
- Block lava before expanding a vein: Place blocks to stop flows, then mine. Keep an escape corridor open instead of sealing yourself into a pocket.
- Collect drops after the area is safe: A block or item near lava is not worth a blind sprint. Clear the threat first, then pick up the material.
- Underwater, protect your air supply: Keep the surface or an air pocket in view and leave before your breathing reserve becomes critical.

Why collect magma blocks?
Knowing the uses helps you judge how much to gather. Mojang describes magma blocks as a source of light, a block that supports indefinitely burning fire on top, and a way to damage mobs placed in pits. Those properties explain common projects such as hazardous mob channels, decorative Nether builds, and lighting schemes. They also explain why a small direct mining trip is often enough: many builds use a limited number of blocks rather than a continuous supply.
Plan the quantity before you travel
- Count the finished structure: Measure the floor, wall, or pit that will use magma blocks and add only a modest reserve for mistakes.
- Separate decorative from functional blocks: A decorative strip needs fewer blocks than a full mob-control floor, which may justify different acquisition routes.
- Store cream when appropriate: If you are unsure whether you will need blocks or another magma-cream recipe, keep part of the drop as cream until the design is finalized.
Troubleshooting common collection problems
The block broke but dropped nothing
Use a pickaxe. The cited block reference states that mining without one produces no block drop. A wooden pickaxe is the minimum practical choice; replace a broken tool before continuing.

You cannot find blocks at the quoted Nether height
Y=27–36 is an edition-sensitive generation clue from a community reference, not a universal coordinate rule. Confirm whether you are playing Java or Bedrock and which game version is installed. Search exposed basalt-delta terrain, other Nether deposits, and structures rather than digging indefinitely at one height.
You keep taking damage while collecting
Stop standing on the blocks. Approach from ordinary terrain, sneak while working, or use the fire-resistance and Frost Walker options described by Mojang. Also check for nearby lava, falls, and mobs; magma damage may not be the only source of lost health.
You have cream but cannot make the blocks
Open a crafting table or inventory crafting grid and use the recipe-book entry for magma blocks. The recipe consumes four magma cream per block. If the recipe is not visible, verify that the cream is the item in your inventory and that you are not confusing it with another Nether drop.

The farm produces little or nothing
Check the farm’s spawning area, collection path, killing mechanism, and storage first. Farm output depends on design, location, edition, nearby mob-cap pressure, and player positioning. Because no controlled rate comparison is established, troubleshoot the specific build rather than assuming a universal blocks-per-hour figure.

Generation details are not identical across Java and Bedrock, and community-wiki parameters can change with game versions. Exact coordinates, replacement blocks, and generation attempts should therefore be treated as edition-specific information.
