On Windows 11, you do not need to guess the BIOS key. Open Settings > System > Recovery > Advanced startup > Restart now, then choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > UEFI Firmware Settings > Restart. The computer reboots directly into its firmware setup screen.

If you prefer the keyboard method, restart the PC and repeatedly tap the key assigned to its manufacturer. Common choices are Esc, Delete, F1, F2, F10, F11, and F12; some tablets use Volume up or Volume down. There is no universal BIOS key, so the exact model’s support documentation is the authority.

Use Windows 11 Settings when you want a dependable route

The graphical route is usually the easiest way to enter firmware because Windows presents the correct restart option and removes the need to catch a brief startup prompt. It works when Windows 11 still starts normally.

  1. Save open documents and close applications.
  2. Open Settings from the Start menu or with Windows key + I.
  3. Select System, then select Recovery.
  4. Under Advanced startup, select Restart now. Windows warns that the device will restart; confirm when prompted.
  5. After the blue Windows Recovery Environment screen appears, select Troubleshoot.
  6. Select Advanced options.
  7. Select UEFI Firmware Settings, then select Restart.

The second restart goes to the firmware interface rather than back to the Windows desktop. Microsoft describes this option as restarting to a screen where you can configure hardware settings such as boot order and Secure Boot.

What to do if the option is not shown

If UEFI Firmware Settings does not appear, the computer may expose firmware entry only through its startup key or through a manufacturer utility. That absence does not necessarily mean the firmware cannot be opened. Use the model-specific startup key described below and check the computer maker’s support instructions if the menu differs.

Use the startup key during power-on

The traditional method is to press a firmware key immediately after turning on or restarting the computer. Because the correct key and timing vary by model, start tapping as soon as the power button is pressed rather than waiting for the Windows logo.

  1. Shut down or restart the computer.
  2. Turn it on and immediately tap the manufacturer’s firmware key repeatedly. A single press may be missed during the short startup window.
  3. When the firmware menu appears, use the keyboard, mouse or built-in controls shown on screen.
  4. Change only the setting you need, then choose the firmware’s Save and Exit command.

Common keys include:

  • Esc
  • Delete
  • F1
  • F2
  • F10
  • F11
  • F12
  • Volume up or Volume down on some tablets

These are possibilities, not a universal list for every model. “Delete,” “F2” and “F10” are all common, but selecting the wrong one usually does nothing; it does not make that key the correct key for your computer. If you do not know the model’s key, use the Windows 11 recovery path or look up the exact model in the manufacturer’s support portal.

Which way into BIOS should you use?

Question Windows graphical route Startup-key route
Does Windows need to boot? Yes. You navigate through Settings and the Windows Recovery Environment. No. You can try it as the computer powers on, before Windows loads.
How precise is the timing? No startup timing is required; the restart command controls the transition. You must begin tapping the key immediately after power-on or restart.
Does it depend on the exact PC model? The Windows menu path is standardized in Windows 11, although the firmware screen itself varies. Yes. The assigned key is manufacturer- and model-specific.
What is the main risk? The path itself does not alter firmware settings; you still need to be careful once the firmware screen opens. Repeatedly trying keys is generally harmless, but entering firmware still carries a risk of changing an unrelated setting accidentally.

Choose the graphical route when Windows works and you want the least guesswork. Choose the startup-key route when Windows cannot reach the desktop, the recovery menu lacks the UEFI option, or you already know the model’s key.

Windows 10 uses a different Settings path

On Windows 10, the equivalent function is located under a different top-level menu:

  1. Save your work and open Settings.
  2. Select Update & Security.
  3. Select Recovery.
  4. Under Advanced startup, select Restart now.
  5. In the recovery screen, select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > UEFI Firmware Settings > Restart.

Windows 11 uses System > Recovery, while Windows 10 uses Update & Security > Recovery. The recovery choices that follow are otherwise the same in the documented procedure.

When F2, Delete or another key does not work

Confirm that you are pressing it early enough

Do not wait for the Windows sign-in screen. Begin tapping the key immediately when the computer is powered on or restarted. Holding a key continuously may not work on every system; repeated taps are the safer approach.

Try the Windows recovery route

If Windows 11 starts, the Settings method avoids the startup timing problem entirely. It also tells you whether the operating system can see a UEFI firmware entry. If that item is missing, return to the model-specific documentation rather than trying random keys indefinitely.

Use the exact model, not just the manufacturer name

A single manufacturer can use different keys across desktops, laptops, tablets and motherboard generations. Search the support site using the full model identifier printed on the device or shown in Windows’ system information. The model’s documentation is more authoritative than a generic “BIOS key” list.

Account for tablet controls

Some tablets do not offer a conventional function-row key at startup. Their documented firmware control may be Volume up or Volume down. Follow the device instructions for the button combination and timing.

When Windows will not start

If the operating system never reaches Settings, the graphical route is unavailable. Use the startup-key method, and consult the manufacturer if the key is unknown or does not produce a firmware screen. The firmware interface may also be reached through a manufacturer-provided utility, depending on the device.

BIOS and UEFI: why both names appear

People still commonly say “enter BIOS,” but modern computers commonly use UEFI, the newer firmware mode. Windows and device makers often retain the older BIOS wording in everyday instructions even when the actual screen is UEFI.

UEFI provides newer boot and security capabilities than legacy BIOS. The Windows recovery menu therefore labels the destination UEFI Firmware Settings, while a support article or startup message may call the same task “BIOS setup.”

Do not switch firmware modes casually. Changing between UEFI and legacy or CSM modes can prevent an existing Windows installation from booting. If a procedure specifically requires a mode change, follow the manufacturer’s instructions and understand which boot mode the current installation uses before saving the change.

What you can change after the firmware screen opens

Firmware menus differ in layout and wording, but common tasks include changing boot order, enabling Secure Boot and reviewing security-device settings. Make the smallest possible change for the task at hand.

Boot order

Boot order determines which storage device or removable media the computer checks first. If you need to start from a particular device, change only the relevant boot-priority entry, then save and exit. An incorrect order can make the computer appear not to find Windows even though the installation is still present.

Secure Boot

Secure Boot is a firmware security feature. Its location and wording vary by firmware version. Change it only when the operating system, application or manufacturer instructions specifically require the change, and record the original value before editing.

TPM and platform-security labels

A security setting may not literally be called “TPM.” Depending on the platform, look for labels such as:

  • Security Device
  • Security Device Support
  • TPM State
  • AMD fTPM
  • AMD PSP fTPM
  • Intel PTT
  • Intel Platform Trust Technology

The label, menu location and available options vary by firmware. If you are unsure which item corresponds to the requested feature, stop and consult the manufacturer rather than changing several security settings at once.

Save, exit and recover safely

Record the original setting

Before changing a value, note its original state or take a photograph of the screen. This gives you a clear way to reverse the change if Windows behaves differently after rebooting.

Change one item at a time

Do not combine an unrelated boot-order change with a Secure Boot or firmware-mode change. Changing one setting at a time makes the cause of a boot problem much easier to identify.

Use Save and Exit deliberately

Firmware interfaces commonly offer separate commands to save changes, exit without saving, or restore defaults. Choose the command that matches your intention. Restoring defaults can undo custom boot, storage or security settings and should not be used as a casual troubleshooting step.

If Windows stops booting after a change

Return to the firmware screen using the same Windows route or startup key, then restore the value you recorded. If you changed UEFI, legacy or CSM mode, restore the previous mode first. If the original value is unknown or the computer still will not start, use the manufacturer’s recovery guidance.

Answers to common BIOS-key questions

What key opens BIOS on Windows 11?

Windows 11 itself has no single BIOS key. Common manufacturer-assigned keys are Esc, Delete, F1, F2, F10, F11 and F12. The exact model decides which one works. You can avoid the key entirely through Settings > System > Recovery > Advanced startup > Restart now, followed by Troubleshoot > Advanced options > UEFI Firmware Settings > Restart.

Is the BIOS key Delete, F2 or F10?

Any of those may be correct on a particular computer, but none is universal. Use the model’s documentation or the Windows recovery route instead of assuming one key applies to every system.

How do I enter BIOS without pressing a key?

In Windows 11, use the Advanced startup path in Settings and select UEFI Firmware Settings. Windows 10 uses Update & Security > Recovery for the same recovery option.

Where is UEFI Firmware Settings in Windows?

In Windows 11 it is in the blue recovery screen under Troubleshoot > Advanced options. In Windows 10, reach that screen through Settings > Update & Security > Recovery > Restart now, then follow the same submenu path.

What if UEFI Firmware Settings is missing?

The device may require its startup key or a manufacturer utility instead. Check the exact model’s support instructions. Do not infer that a missing menu item authorizes random firmware changes.

Practical checklist before you begin

  • Save work and connect the computer to reliable power.
  • Decide whether you need the Windows route or the startup-key route.
  • Have the exact model identifier available if you need manufacturer instructions.
  • Know the single firmware setting you intend to change.
  • Record the original value before saving any modification.
  • Leave unrelated settings unchanged.
