Those figures are a point-in-time report, not a guarantee for your particular segment.

- Check again if your aircraft or flight number changes.
- Plan for legacy Wi‑Fi unless the tracker specifically identifies the assigned aircraft or flight as Starlink-equipped.
This matters because the login, price, expected performance and MileagePlus benefit depend on the system installed on the aircraft, not simply on your airline account or route.

How to connect on a non-Starlink United flight
Use the following sequence once the aircraft is at the stage where the crew permits approved electronic-device use. Keep cellular radios in airplane mode; Wi‑Fi can be turned back on separately.
- Wait for the crew announcement. Do not activate or use a device before the crew permits electronic-device use for that phase of flight.
- Turn on airplane mode. This disables cellular transmission. On your phone, tablet or laptop, open the quick settings or network settings and enable Wi‑Fi again while airplane mode remains on.
- Join the aircraft network. Select the network labeled “United Wi‑Fi.” On some older aircraft or instructions, the equivalent appears as “United_Wi‑Fi.” Choose the network shown by your device rather than a similarly named ground network.
- Open a browser. The sign-in page may appear automatically. If it does not, type unitedwifi.com directly into the address bar. Do not search for the portal through a normal search engine.
- Review the options. The portal identifies free services available on that aircraft and displays any paid internet plans. Free access can include messaging, United.com, the United app and inflight entertainment, but the exact offer is aircraft-dependent.
- Select the service you need. Choose the free messaging or United-services option if it meets your needs. For general web access, choose the full-internet plan and follow the portal’s payment instructions.
- Complete activation. Select “Purchase” when the portal presents the paid option. Keep the confirmation page and receipt, especially if you expect to use the refund process later.
- Test a small request first. Open a lightweight webpage or send a message before attempting a large download. This confirms that the session is active without consuming bandwidth unnecessarily.
United describes the paid product as a way to gain full Internet access, enable text messaging and more. The portal shown on your aircraft is authoritative for that flight’s available services.
What you can use without paying
On Wi‑Fi-equipped aircraft, United documents free messaging and access to United.com, the United app and inflight entertainment. These are limited, airline-controlled services rather than unrestricted internet. An aircraft exception can remove one or more of them, so check the portal instead of assuming that every listed function is available.
Free messaging
When messaging is offered, it is intended for supported text-based services. Photos, video clips, voice calls and other data-heavy features may not work reliably or may be excluded by the portal. If a messaging app cannot connect, first verify that you selected the free messaging option rather than merely joining the network.

United.com, the United app and inflight entertainment can be available without a paid internet pass. These destinations may load through United’s onboard system even when ordinary websites do not. Use the links presented by the portal so that the service is recognized correctly.

Joining the Wi‑Fi network alone does not guarantee unrestricted browsing. On a non-Starlink aircraft, full web access is generally the paid option. A free service session can also be limited to one class of traffic or to the duration of that flight.
Buying full internet on legacy Wi‑Fi
There is no single universal price published in the cited United material. The amount shown in the portal can vary by aircraft, route, provider, flight duration and United’s current pricing. United’s terms say charges are per aircraft from takeoff to landing, and both the flyer and terms state that prices can change.

- Choose the full-internet option rather than the free United-services or messaging option.
- Read the displayed coverage period and device conditions before paying.
- Select “Purchase” and complete the checkout shown by the portal.
- Save the receipt, confirmation email or a screenshot of the transaction.
“Per aircraft from takeoff to landing” means the charge is tied to that airborne session, not a promise of an all-day or multi-flight subscription. If you change aircraft or take a connecting flight, expect to repeat the process unless the portal explicitly says otherwise.
Can one purchase cover several devices?
Do not assume it can. The portal determines whether a plan supports additional devices and how you add them. A phone hotspot or travel router cannot be used as a substitute for an authorized second-device connection, and attempting to share a session may leave the added device offline. Why the connection may feel slow

- Large downloads: United says large downloads may be throttled. Delay operating-system updates, cloud backups and other bulk transfers until landing.
- Streaming: Video streaming may be throttled or fail to start. A paid pass is not a guarantee of a particular resolution or uninterrupted playback.
- VPN: United’s terms say VPN access may be intermittent and may require multiple logins. A corporate VPN can also reject the connection when the aircraft network changes.
- Calls: Voice and video calls can be restricted by the service, the app or the practical limits of a shared cabin connection. Do not treat a successful text message as proof that calls will work.
- Latency: Pages that require many simultaneous requests may take longer than on a terrestrial connection. Start with a simple page to distinguish a working but slow link from a failed login.
For work, download documents before boarding, keep local copies of authentication codes where permitted, and plan an offline fallback. Inflight internet is useful for messages and light browsing, but it is not a guaranteed replacement for a ground broadband connection.
Troubleshooting when unitedwifi.com will not open
1. Confirm the radio settings
Airplane mode should remain on, with Wi‑Fi manually enabled. If cellular service is also active, turn it off again. On a laptop, check that a hardware wireless switch or function key has not disabled Wi‑Fi.
2. Rejoin the aircraft network
Forget or disconnect from the current Wi‑Fi session, wait a few seconds, then select “United Wi‑Fi” again. If your device lists “United_Wi‑Fi,” use the network actually displayed by the aircraft.

3. Type the address directly
Enter unitedwifi.com in the browser address bar. A search result, a previously cached page or a normal HTTPS site may not trigger the captive portal. Close extra tabs and retry with a standard browser window.
4. Temporarily avoid conflicting network tools
A VPN, private relay, custom DNS profile or security filter can prevent a captive portal from appearing. Disable the tool temporarily if your organization’s policy allows it, complete the portal login, then test whether it can be re-enabled. United warns that VPN access itself may remain intermittent.
5. Check the phase of flight
The service may not be available until the crew permits device use, and it can stop before landing. Wait for the relevant announcement rather than repeatedly attempting to authenticate during a restricted phase.

6. Ask the crew only for network guidance
Cabin crew can confirm the network name or whether Wi‑Fi is expected on that aircraft. They cannot make an unavailable paid plan appear, change a provider’s capacity or turn a non-Starlink aircraft into a Starlink flight.

Keep the receipt and note the flight number, date, approximate purchase time, device and the point at which service failed. United says service-failure refunds may be requested through its refund form.
The refund route depends on the provider that processed the charge:
- Charges handled through Panasonic, Thales or Viasat are routed through United’s refund process.
- Intelstat or Gogo charges are directed to those providers under United’s stated process.
Describe the failure precisely—portal never completed, authentication succeeded but no traffic passed, or service stopped after purchase. A receipt alone does not prove a network outage, while a short timeline and screenshots make the request easier to evaluate.
Why a hotspot, eSIM or travel router cannot replace onboard Wi‑Fi
A cellular hotspot needs a terrestrial mobile network. At cruising altitude, the phone is normally in airplane mode and outside ordinary ground coverage, so a hotspot cannot create an internet link for the cabin.
A travel eSIM changes the cellular subscription, not the physical radio path. It can be useful before departure or after landing, but it does not supply airborne coverage when the device cannot reach a compatible ground network.
A power bank can extend battery life, and a travel router can share a connection that already exists. Neither device creates United internet or bypasses the aircraft portal. If the aircraft’s Wi‑Fi is unavailable or the portal is down, buying generic hardware will not solve that specific failure.
A practical preflight and onboard checklist
Before leaving for the airport
- Check United’s Starlink tracker with your flight number up to three days before departure.
- Update the United app and download boarding details, work files and entertainment for offline use.
- Charge each device; bring a power bank for battery support, not as an internet solution.
- Arrange an offline method for two-factor authentication if your work account requires it.
After boarding
- Wait for the crew’s electronic-device announcement.
- Enable airplane mode, then re-enable Wi‑Fi.
- Join “United Wi‑Fi” or the equivalent network shown onboard.
- Open unitedwifi.com directly.
- Check the free services before buying anything.
- Save the receipt if you purchase a plan.
Before attempting demanding work
- Send a test message or load a lightweight page.

Why does the portal work on one device but not another?
Each device may have different VPN, DNS, privacy or captive-portal settings, and the plan may limit additional devices. Reconnect the affected device, type the portal address directly and follow the plan’s device instructions rather than trying to share a hotspot.
