When AT&T home internet is down, first check AT&T’s outage page and subscribe to its text updates. If an outage is confirmed, your practical alternatives are AT&T Internet Backup (only for qualifying Fiber customers), a phone hotspot, or a dedicated mobile hotspot with active cellular service. If AT&T shows no outage, restart the gateway and troubleshoot the local connection instead.
Start by confirming whether AT&T has reported an outage
Before changing cables, buying equipment, or resetting your network, check AT&T’s official outage tool at AT&T’s outage-status page. Check the service associated with your account or enter the affected address. The page can show outage details and status updates, and it lets you sign up for text notifications about the current incident.

- Open the outage-status page.
- Sign in or provide the requested account or address information.
- Read the status shown for your internet service.
- Enroll in text alerts if they are offered for the incident.
Check the address or account affected rather than relying only on reports from neighbors or social media. A local equipment problem and a wider AT&T incident can look similar from inside the home, but the next step is different. An outage confirmation means repeated gateway restarts are unlikely to restore service. A clear outage page means local troubleshooting is appropriate.

An outage confirmation changes the right response: use an available cellular connection rather than repeatedly rebooting equipment. AT&T does not promise a universal restoration time in the guidance cited here, so rely on the status updates rather than an assumed deadline. Keep the text updates enabled while you work, since the status can change after your initial check.

Choose the connection that fits your situation
| Option | When it works | Important limits |
|---|---|---|
| AT&T Internet Backup | Qualifying AT&T Fiber account with the required gateway, wireless device and Smart Home Manager setup | Limited eligibility; depends on cellular coverage and the participating phone staying powered; performance can vary |
| Phone hotspot or tethering | Your phone has cellular data coverage and both the device and plan allow hotspot use | Hotspot allowances, plan restrictions, battery life and signal quality apply |
| Dedicated mobile hotspot | The hotspot has an active SIM or service plan, coverage and compatible settings | Buying the hardware alone supplies no internet connection |
| Gateway restart | AT&T reports no outage and your local gateway may be stuck | Disconnects household devices temporarily and cannot bypass an upstream outage |
| Public Wi-Fi | A safe, accessible network is available nearby | Availability and security vary; it is not an AT&T repair or guaranteed substitute |
Use the table as a decision guide, not as a promise that every option will be available. Internet Backup is a specific AT&T Fiber feature. A phone hotspot and a dedicated hotspot are ordinary cellular-data connections governed by the applicable device and plan. A gateway restart addresses your equipment, not AT&T’s network. Public Wi-Fi is only a temporary local alternative.
Use AT&T Internet Backup if your Fiber setup qualifies
AT&T Internet Backup is an automatic failover feature, not a benefit included with every AT&T internet account. AT&T lists all of the following requirements:
- AT&T Fiber service.
- A BGW320 or BGW620 All-Fi Hub.
- An eligible AT&T Wireless unlimited-plan device associated with the Fiber account.
- The Smart Home Manager app.
If any of these conditions is missing, the feature may not be available. A different gateway model, a wireless line that is not eligible, or a device that is not associated with the Fiber account can prevent setup. AT&T’s setup instructions are in Set Up AT&T Internet Backup.
The Tool Desk

- Remain at home and connect your phone to the AT&T Wi-Fi network.
- Open Smart Home Manager.
- Select the Internet Backup card.
- Follow the on-screen prompts and grant the permissions requested by the app.
Complete this setup while Fiber is working. Doing so lets the app identify the hub and participating wireless device before you need them. If you wait until the gateway is offline, the phone may not be connected to the required home Wi-Fi network, making setup more difficult or impossible during the interruption.
When Fiber service fails, the All-Fi Hub connects through the participating mobile device. When Fiber service returns, the hub switches back automatically. That automatic return means household devices can continue using the normal Fiber connection without manually changing every Wi-Fi setting. Keep that phone charged and within practical wireless range of the hub; a power bank can help maintain power during a prolonged interruption, but it does not create cellular coverage.
Understand what the backup connection can and cannot do
AT&T says Internet Backup uses wireless-network data rather than the phone’s ordinary mobile-hotspot allowance. That distinction means the feature is not simply consuming the hotspot bucket shown in your phone plan. It still relies on the wireless network serving the participating device, so speeds can differ substantially from your Fiber connection and may slow when the cellular network is busy. The feature also stops being useful if the phone loses coverage, its service is suspended, or its battery runs out.
Do not assume that an AT&T wireless unlimited plan automatically qualifies. Eligibility is tied to the specific Fiber account, All-Fi Hub model, associated device and Smart Home Manager configuration listed above. If the Internet Backup card is absent, verify those requirements before treating the missing card as a temporary app error.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Internet Backup also is not a second wired line. It is a cellular failover path for the All-Fi Hub, so its capacity is shared by the household devices that remain connected to the hub. Limit bandwidth-heavy activity when possible, especially if the cellular network is busy, and expect performance to vary rather than match your usual Fiber speed.
Share a phone’s cellular connection with a hotspot
A normal phone hotspot is the fastest fallback when the cellular network is working and your plan permits tethering. The phone must have usable mobile-data coverage; Wi-Fi bars from the failed home gateway do not count as cellular coverage. Test the phone itself first: if its browser cannot load a page over mobile data, turning on hotspot sharing will not give a laptop or television internet access.
Turn on the phone hotspot
- Open the phone’s network or connectivity settings.
- Enable Mobile Hotspot, Personal Hotspot or the equivalent tethering control.
- Note the Wi-Fi network name and password displayed by the phone.
- On the computer, tablet or streaming device that needs access, open its Wi-Fi list.
- Select the phone’s hotspot name and enter the displayed password.
Connect only the devices that need to be online. Each additional device consumes the same cellular connection and can increase battery drain. Keep the phone connected to a charger when possible. Hotspot operation can drain a battery quickly, particularly while several devices are transferring data. When you finish, turn hotspot sharing off so other devices do not continue using mobile data.
If a device previously used the home network, it may automatically keep trying to reconnect to the unavailable AT&T Wi-Fi. Select the phone’s hotspot explicitly and confirm that the password is the current one shown on the phone. A saved password can become wrong after hotspot settings are changed.

Check the plan and cellular connection if it fails
AT&T’s tethering guidance says to verify cellular coverage, SIM installation and activation, cellular settings, the hotspot credentials and the client device’s Wi-Fi connection. Restart both the phone and the device trying to connect if necessary. The plan must explicitly support tethering or mobile-hotspot use; a phone that can browse on its own may still be blocked from sharing that connection.
For model-specific troubleshooting, consult AT&T’s Device User Guide: Tethering and Mobile Hotspot Troubleshooting and, for the AT&T Quatro device, its Troubleshooting guide. These checks are more useful than changing the home gateway when the failed connection is the phone’s cellular link.
Use a dedicated mobile hotspot only with active service
A standalone hotspot can keep the phone free for calls and conserve its battery, but the device is only the radio and Wi-Fi hardware. It needs an active SIM or equivalent cellular service, a plan that permits hotspot data, compatible cellular settings and coverage at your location. A sealed device or a device with no activated account cannot create internet access by itself.
- Confirm that the device has an activated SIM or service account.
- Verify that the plan includes hotspot or tethering use and check any allowance or restriction that applies.
- Place the device where cellular reception is strongest, such as near an exterior window.
- Turn on its Wi-Fi network and record the network name and password.
- Connect your computers and other equipment to that network.
- If it will not connect, recheck coverage, SIM activation, cellular settings and the client credentials, then restart the hotspot and the client device.
Do not purchase a hotspot expecting it to work immediately without a subscription. No specific carrier plan, price or allowance is established here, so check the current terms for the service you intend to use. Confirm compatibility before buying: cellular bands, SIM status, account activation and tethering permissions all matter. Hardware that worked on one service may not be supported on another.

It does not remove the underlying limits, however. Coverage, congestion, plan rules and battery power still determine whether the connection is usable.
If AT&T reports no outage, restart the gateway
If the outage checker does not show an incident for your address, AT&T recommends restarting the hub or gateway as part of local troubleshooting. Use the procedure in AT&T’s internet help guidance:
- Unplug the gateway’s power cable.
- Wait at least 20 seconds.
- Reconnect the power cable.
- Allow the hub or gateway to restart; AT&T says this can take up to five minutes, although timing and indicators vary by model and service.
- Reconnect a device and test a web page.
Every connected device will lose access while the gateway is off and while it is starting again. Warn anyone on a call or submitting work before unplugging it. A restart can clear a local software or session problem, but it cannot restore service during an area or upstream AT&T outage. If the connection remains down after the restart and no outage is listed, continue with AT&T’s diagnostic prompts or contact support rather than repeatedly power-cycling the equipment.
Do not confuse a restart with a factory reset. The cited guidance calls for removing power briefly and reconnecting it; it does not instruct you to erase configuration settings. Use the model-specific support flow if indicators remain abnormal after the normal restart.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTroubleshoot the fallback connection systematically
The phone has no usable cellular data
- Move to a location with better cellular reception.
- Confirm that mobile data is enabled and that the SIM is installed and active.
- Check whether the account has reached a data or hotspot restriction.
- Restart the phone and test its own browser before attempting to share the connection.
If the phone itself cannot load a page over cellular data, its hotspot cannot provide internet to other devices. A stronger Wi-Fi signal from the failed gateway does not help; the phone must reach the cellular network directly. If service is suspended or coverage is unavailable, use another active connection rather than repeatedly changing hotspot passwords.
The phone connects, but another device cannot join
- Re-enter the exact hotspot name and password shown on the phone.
- Forget the saved hotspot network on the client device and join it again.
- Turn hotspot sharing off and on.
- Restart both the phone and the client device.
These checks address the Wi-Fi link between devices; they do not fix a missing cellular subscription or coverage problem. If one device joins but another does not, compare the failing device’s Wi-Fi settings and credentials rather than assuming the cellular service is down.
Internet Backup does not appear in Smart Home Manager
Check the eligibility conditions rather than assuming the app is malfunctioning: the account must have AT&T Fiber, a BGW320 or BGW620 All-Fi Hub, an eligible associated AT&T Wireless unlimited-plan device and Smart Home Manager. Connect to the home Wi-Fi while setting it up and install any app updates offered. If the card still does not appear, the account or equipment may not qualify. An ordinary phone hotspot remains a separate option if the phone’s plan supports tethering.

The gateway restart changes nothing
Confirm the outage status again and inspect the gateway’s service indicators. If AT&T has identified an outage, wait for its status updates and use cellular fallback. If no outage is listed, follow the model-specific support flow rather than performing repeated resets that only interrupt connected devices. Record what the status page says and when the restart was completed so you can provide clear information if you contact AT&T.
Use public Wi-Fi only as a short-term last resort
A library, workplace, hotel or other public network may provide temporary access when cellular options are unavailable, but availability is local and not verified by AT&T’s outage guidance. Treat an unfamiliar network as untrusted: prefer encrypted websites, avoid entering sensitive credentials on a network you do not control, and disconnect when finished. Public Wi-Fi does not repair your AT&T line or guarantee enough capacity for video calls and large downloads.
Use it for essential, low-risk tasks when possible. Do not interpret a public connection as evidence that your AT&T gateway has recovered; check the AT&T status page before switching your household devices back.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Prepare before the next interruption
- Bookmark AT&T’s outage page and enable text alerts when an incident is open.
- If you have qualifying Fiber equipment, set up Internet Backup while your home connection is working.
- Learn where your phone’s hotspot control and password are located.
- Keep the participating phone charged; consider a charged power bank for longer outages.
- Record the gateway model so you can follow the correct restart procedure.
- Review your mobile plan’s current hotspot terms instead of assuming every line permits tethering.
- Check that any dedicated hotspot has an activated SIM or service account before an emergency.
Preparation prevents a common failure during an outage: discovering that a hotspot device has no service or that the phone plan blocks tethering. Test the phone’s mobile data and locate the hotspot controls in advance, but remember that a successful test does not guarantee coverage or capacity during a future incident.
What to expect during the outage
Cellular fallback is a bridge, not a guaranteed replacement for Fiber. Available speed depends on signal conditions, network congestion, the phone or hotspot hardware and the plan’s rules. Internet Backup, a phone hotspot and a dedicated hotspot are separate mechanisms: the first is an eligible Fiber failover feature, while the other two share ordinary cellular data according to their plans. None can work without functioning cellular service.
Internet Backup’s use of wireless-network data should not be confused with a phone’s ordinary mobile-hotspot allowance. Conversely, a regular hotspot can be limited by the plan’s hotspot terms even when the phone itself still has mobile data. That distinction is important when deciding whether to connect many devices or perform large downloads.
The most reliable sequence is therefore simple: verify the outage, activate the fallback you already qualify for, keep its device powered, and use AT&T’s status updates to know when to switch back. If no outage is reported, restart the gateway once and continue with AT&T’s local troubleshooting guidance.
Frequently asked questions
Can every AT&T internet customer use Internet Backup?
No. AT&T lists AT&T Fiber, a BGW320 or BGW620 All-Fi Hub, an eligible AT&T Wireless unlimited-plan device associated with the Fiber account, and Smart Home Manager. Customers outside those requirements should use an ordinary phone hotspot, a qualifying dedicated hotspot, or another temporary connection.
Does Internet Backup consume my phone’s hotspot allowance?
AT&T says Internet Backup uses wireless-network data rather than the phone’s ordinary mobile-hotspot allowance. It can still slow when the cellular network is busy, and it requires the participating phone to have service, coverage and battery power.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWill buying a mobile hotspot give me internet automatically?
No. The device needs an active SIM or equivalent service, a plan that supports hotspot data, compatible settings and cellular coverage. Confirm those requirements and current terms before buying hardware.
Why can my phone browse but not share internet?
Phone browsing and tethering can be governed by different plan permissions. Verify that the plan permits mobile-hotspot use, then check cellular settings, SIM activation, hotspot credentials and the client device’s Wi-Fi connection.

How long should I wait after restarting the gateway?
AT&T says the hub or gateway can take up to five minutes to restart after power is restored. Connected devices remain offline during the interruption. If an area outage is reported, restarting will not bypass it.
Should I keep restarting the gateway during an outage?
No. Confirm the outage first. Repeated restarts only disconnect household devices and do not repair an upstream AT&T outage. Use cellular fallback and follow the status updates instead.
Can a power bank provide Internet Backup?
A power bank can keep the participating phone charged, which may help during a prolonged interruption. It does not provide cellular coverage, activate a plan or create an internet connection.
What if the AT&T outage page shows no problem?
Restart the gateway by unplugging it, waiting at least 20 seconds, reconnecting it and allowing up to five minutes for startup. If service still fails, use AT&T’s diagnostic prompts or contact support. Do not assume that a restart can fix an outage that is simply not yet listed.
