What the Handyman requirement means
Guides describe Handyman as defeating the Mutated Bowhead Whale with bare hands. Their practical interpretation is that the last hit must be an unarmed punch; they do not say you must fight the entire boss battle without weapons. Brass knuckles are reported not to satisfy the condition, so unequip them as well as firearms before finishing the whale. AllThings.How and EZG describe this method, but a September guide calls it unconfirmed for version 1.0.12. Check the achievement in your own game after the kill.

How to reach the Mutated Bowhead Whale
- Prepare before starting the whale sequence: bring your upgraded assault rifle and healing food. One guide recommends staging extra cooked fish near the military base because there may not be a safe opportunity to restock after the final boss appears.
- On Volcano Island, give the scientist five fish in exchange for whale bait, then fit the bait to your fishing rod.
- Catch and kill the regular Bowhead Whale. Its described attack pattern is a charge followed by a leap and a slam; move as it launches. Save as much healing food as you can for the next fight.
- Carry the whale carcass along the plank route and throw it into the volcano lava. This summons the Mutated Bowhead Whale. Move toward the military-base area, which guides recommend for its flatter fighting ground.
The whale bait, carcass, and lava are all parts of the in-game route; the mutated whale does not appear simply by approaching the volcano.

Keep moving and use attack openings
Guides describe rolls, stomps, lava pools, and later-phase projectile or meteor pressure. Keep moving, strafe or dodge out of hazards, and attack when the whale leaves an opening. Heal promptly after taking damage rather than waiting until you are close to being knocked out.

Use healing food strategically
Cooked fish are the main healing preparation described in the guides. One guide recommends lava-cooked fish and reports a 1.5× value from lava cooking; that multiplier is guide-reported and may vary by game version. Another suggests Foot Snails for healing and dynamite for damage. These are tactical options, not documented requirements for Handyman.
Save a safe finish for the final hit
Restore to full health before moving close to punch: the boss can kill a player at close range. The available guides do not establish an exact health percentage or numeric threshold for when to stop ranged attacks. EZG notes that the game does not show a precise boss-health value, so do not wait for a tiny visible sliver. Leave a margin, stop shooting, and make sure no other damage source is about to finish the whale.

How to land the reported bare-hands killing blow
- When the whale is nearly defeated, stop firing and stop using any other damage source.
- Heal to full health while you still have room to avoid danger.
- Unequip firearms and brass knuckles so the next attack is an unarmed punch.
- Move in and keep punching until the whale falls. The exact remaining-health threshold and the number of punches required are not established by the cited guides.
- Check whether Handyman has unlocked. Because current-patch reports conflict, a kill that follows the commonly reported method may still fail to award it in some builds.
What to do after the whale dies
- Pick up the Whale Fin from the defeated Mutated Bowhead Whale.
- Return the fin to the Volcano Island scientist and take the RHIB keys.
- Board and start the RHIB to complete the described story sequence.
How certain is the method in the current version?
Detailed guides updated August 25 and 27, 2026 describe the final-punch approach. A separate fan guide updated October 7, 2026 says it is based on sources rather than independent playtesting and discusses evidence through patch 1.0.12. A September guide explicitly labels the older gun-then-fist method unconfirmed in 1.0.12. The available material therefore supports the intended wording and commonly reported technique, but does not settle whether it works in every current build. The sources also do not confirm reliable shared achievement credit in co-op, even though guides describe co-op as a more forgiving way to handle the fights.
