Start by confirming the exact port and berth on your cruise itinerary: Adriatic ships do not all dock beside the historic centre. Dubrovnik’s port at Gruž is about a 30–40-minute walk from the Old City, while Zadar’s Gaženica port is about 4 km south of its historic centre. Check the port’s current passenger information and ask your cruise line about any shuttle before choosing how to go.
Confirm where your ship docks
“Adriatic port” is not precise enough to plan a walk or transfer. Check the port and berth named in your cruise documents or confirmed by the cruise line. Then consult that port authority’s passenger guidance and the local transit operator for routes, schedules and fares on your ship-call day. A nearby stop may still leave you with a walk to the old-town entrance.

The Port of Dubrovnik Authority says the cruise port is in Gruž, about a 30–40-minute walk from the historic Old City. Its published estimates are route guidance, not a guarantee for your pace or conditions. The authority recommends comfortable shoes and water for the walk, particularly in summer. Check the Port of Dubrovnik Authority’s current directions to the Old City before setting out.
#1 Best Overall
Walk
Walking avoids waiting for a vehicle, but allow for the full distance and summer heat. Choose it if the time, weather and walking conditions suit you.
Bus
The authority says the bus from the port to Pile, by the Old City, takes around 10–15 minutes depending on traffic. Buses to parts of town run every 10–20 minutes according to the same passenger page. Check the current route, service and fare before relying on those published figures.
Rank #2
Taxi
The port authority lists a roughly 7–10-minute taxi ride, depending on traffic, and fares typically from around €10. Treat that as a published starting point, not a guaranteed fare: confirm the current price and destination with the driver or provider.
Zadar: Gaženica to the historic centre
Zadar Cruise Port places Gaženica Passenger Port approximately 4 km south of the historic town centre. That distance makes checking transport sensible before you leave the ship. The port lists taxis, private transfers, public buses and cruise-organized shuttles as possible options, but the available information does not establish a fixed bus timetable or fare. Read Zadar Cruise Port’s current FAQ and check Zadar Tourist Board’s information for Gaženica.
Rank #3
Ask about the shuttle
Zadar Cruise Port says shuttles are generally provided by cruise lines or local operators on cruise days. Availability and terms can vary, so ask your cruise line whether a shuttle runs on your call, where it drops passengers, and whether there is a fee. Do not assume that a shuttle is included or operates on every visit.
Compare other transport options
Check whether taxis, private transfers or public buses will operate on your ship-call day, where they pick up and drop off, and what the current fare is. For a private transfer, confirm the pickup point and return arrangements with the provider. The port recommends comfortable shoes and sun protection in summer.

Choose a route and protect your return time
Compare more than the one-way travel time. Use these checks for either port:

- Service on your call: confirm the route or shuttle actually runs that day, including its schedule and any fee.
- Drop-off and pickup: establish how far the stop is from the old-town entrance and save the return location.
- Cost and convenience: compare current fares with the value of a more direct or predictable trip.
- Return buffer: leave time for traffic, queues and the journey back before the ship’s stated all-aboard time.
Published journey times and service frequencies can change, and traffic or queues can make a return trip slower than expected. Recheck details near your sailing date rather than planning around an unverified fare or schedule.
