To get federal student loans out of default, confirm the loan’s status and holder through StudentAid.gov, then ask that official holder which resolution options are available for your loans. The main routes are rehabilitation, Direct Consolidation, a qualifying repayment agreement, or paying in full; each has different timing, costs, and credit-report effects.
Confirm that your federal loan is in default and find who handles it
Federal Student Aid describes a federal student loan as being in default after at least 270 days without scheduled payments. Check your loan status, loan type, balance, and contact details by logging in to StudentAid.gov, and review any official notices you have received. This process applies to federal loans; private student loans do not use the same federal resolution routes.

The holder handling a default can depend on the loan. Many Department of Education-held loans are handled by the Default Resolution Group, while some commercially held Federal Family Education Loan (FFEL) loans are handled by a guaranty agency. Use the contact information shown in your account or notice rather than assuming your former servicer still handles the default.

Federal Student Aid lists rehabilitation, Direct Consolidation, a qualifying repayment agreement, and payment in full as routes for addressing default. Availability depends on your loan type, account history, and circumstances, so confirm the terms with the holder before choosing.
#1 Best Overall
| Option | What it involves | Timing and balance | Credit and collection considerations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rehabilitation | Sign an agreement and complete nine qualifying voluntary payments. Direct and FFEL borrowers make the payments within 10 consecutive months; Perkins borrowers make nine consecutive payments. Federal Student Aid rehabilitation guidance | Usually takes multiple months. Ask the holder how the payment amount is calculated and whether an alternative amount is available. | After the ninth qualifying payment, the Department requests removal of the default record. Earlier reported late payments may remain. Federal Student Aid default guidance |
| Direct Consolidation | Apply for a Direct Consolidation Loan through Federal Student Aid, if eligible, and review the current application terms. Federal Student Aid default guidance · Direct Consolidation Loan application and promissory note | May resolve default faster than rehabilitation, but capitalized interest and collection costs can increase the balance. | The default record may remain on your credit history. Ask how consolidation affects any active collection action. |
| Qualifying repayment agreement | Agree to the terms offered by the holder and meet any notice-specific deadlines. Federal Student Aid default guidance | The amount and schedule depend on the agreement; confirm them with the holder. | Default remains on your credit history. Meeting a deadline may prevent certain collection actions, but do not assume all collection stops when you begin discussing an agreement. |
| Pay in full | Request the current payoff amount and payment instructions from the official holder. Federal Student Aid default guidance | Resolves the debt through payment, but the payoff amount and instructions are account-specific. | Ask the holder what will happen to any active collection action and when the account status will be updated. |
Understand how rehabilitation payments are set
For Direct and FFEL loans, the standard rehabilitation payment is 15% of annual discretionary income divided by 12. If that amount is unaffordable, ask the holder about an alternative payment amount before signing the agreement. Perkins loans follow a different payment schedule: nine consecutive payments rather than the Direct and FFEL schedule of nine payments within 10 consecutive months. Federal Student Aid says borrowers may need to submit a recent tax transcript or a copy of their most recent federal tax return to the relevant holder. Follow the holder’s instructions, keep a copy of your agreement and documents, and save confirmation of each payment.

Take these steps through official channels
- Check your account: Sign in at StudentAid.gov and record the loan type, status, balance, holder or servicer information, and contact details. Make sure your address is current and review notices about collection or deadlines. Federal Student Aid default guidance
- Contact the entity handling the default: Use the contact information in your account or official notice. Ask which resolution routes are available for each loan and whether there is an active garnishment, offset, or deadline.
- Compare the terms before agreeing: Ask about eligibility, payment amount, fees or interest capitalization, credit reporting, collection activity, and how repayment will work after the default is resolved. For rehabilitation, ask what income documents are required; for consolidation, review the current official application and terms.
- Complete the selected route and keep records: Follow the holder’s payment or application instructions, retain confirmations, and use MyEdDebt.ed.gov to check status and payment information if your defaulted loan is handled there. Federal Student Aid rehabilitation guidance
- Verify the change and arrange repayment: Once the holder says the default has been resolved, check that the account status has changed and contact the new servicer about the repayment schedule that applies to your loan.
Respond promptly to garnishment or tax refund offset notices
Default can lead to collection actions, including administrative wage garnishment or Treasury offset, subject to the applicable notices and processes. Federal Student Aid says administrative wage garnishment may take up to 15% of disposable pay. If you receive a notice, contact the holder named on it promptly, ask what deadline and response options apply to your account, and keep a record of the conversation. Starting an application or making an initial contact does not, by itself, establish that every collection action has stopped. Ask the official holder when any specific action may be paused or changed under the route you are considering.
Plan for repayment after default is cleared
Clearing default is not the same as having the loan forgiven or paid off; you still need to understand how the remaining balance will be repaid. While a loan is in default, Federal Student Aid says it is not eligible for an income-driven repayment plan. After resolution, available plans depend on loan type and current eligibility. Repayment rules changed around July 1, 2026, and Federal Student Aid says PAYE and ICR are scheduled to retire no later than July 1, 2028, so check its current guidance before choosing a plan rather than relying on older plan-specific advice. Avoid paid default-rescue offers
Federal Student Aid says the Default Resolution Group does not charge for its services and warns borrowers to be wary of companies that charge enrollment, subscription, or maintenance fees to help get loans out of default. Use StudentAid.gov, MyEdDebt.ed.gov where applicable, the holder listed in your account, and official notices. Do not pay an intermediary on the assumption that it can speed up government action.
