It names every ending and the choices that lead to them. Check your platform before following any route: the Nintendo DS original and the remastered Zero Escape: The Nonary Games version have six endings, while the iOS Novel adds a seventh, the Syringe Ending.
Check your version before choosing a route
The ending count depends on the edition. On Nintendo DS and in the remastered version included in Zero Escape: The Nonary Games, the ending set is six: True, Coffin, Axe, Safe (also called Zero Lost), Knife, and Submarine. The iOS Novel has those routes plus an iOS-only Syringe Ending reached through Door 3. Do not use the Syringe route as though it exists in the DS or remastered game.

The collection edition is a digital release from Spike Chunsoft that pairs the remastered 999 with Virtue’s Last Reward. Its 999 portion is based on the Nintendo DS game but uses high-resolution graphics and Japanese and English voice acting. The collection released on Steam on March 24, 2017. The original DS release is a separate physical edition; availability and condition vary by region, so verify the current listing and language details before buying.
How many endings does 999 have?

Therefore, count six endings for DS or Zero Escape: The Nonary Games, and seven for the iOS Novel. The remaster’s flowchart records progress, but its route logic still follows the original six-ending structure.

The best order for a complete playthrough
Use this order if you want every available result while avoiding a permanent lockout:
- Complete the Axe, Submarine, and Knife endings in any order.
- Complete the Coffin Ending and save the result if you want its separate cliffhanger.
- Complete the Safe (Zero Lost) Ending and save it.
- Start another run and complete the True Ending requirements.
- On iOS, use Door 3 for the additional Syringe Ending whenever you want; it is independent of the DS/remaster six-ending list.
The order matters because saving the Safe Ending prevents the separate Coffin result from appearing later. In the remastered flowchart, finishing True also marks Coffin as cleared, but it does not restore the distinct pre-Safe Coffin scene. Treat Coffin as optional for story completion, yet missable if you want every separately recorded ending.
Quick route tables
Each sequence lists the numbered doors chosen during the relevant branches. For bad endings, do not accidentally complete all of the Safe and True requirements; those story checks can redirect a run toward the later endings.

Any one of these sequences can produce Axe when the Safe/True requirements are not all satisfied.

These three route groups are the straightforward bad-ending targets. If the game reaches a different result, check that the door order matches one of the listed sequences and that you did not satisfy a later Safe or True flag unintentionally.
How to reach the Safe (Zero Lost) Ending
Safe is the gate to True. You must see and record it before attempting the final ending. Follow this sequence:

- Choose Door 5 to reach the first-class cabin.
- After the casino section, choose Door 8 to reach the laboratory.
- Choose Door 6 to enter the steam-engine room.
When the Safe result appears, save the ending. If you skip this result, a later run cannot resolve as True even if every True-story choice is correct.

How to get the Coffin Ending before it is locked
Coffin follows the True route far enough to reach its cliffhanger, but you must do it before Safe has been completed and saved. In practical terms, begin a run that follows the True path while Safe is still uncleared. The game stops at the Coffin cliffhanger instead of continuing to the True conclusion.
Because Safe permanently removes the separate Coffin result, make this your fourth target—after Axe, Submarine, and Knife, but before Safe. The remastered flowchart may show Coffin as cleared when True is later completed; that entry reflects route completion and is not the same as preserving the earlier, standalone Coffin scene.
How to unlock the True Ending
True requires two things: Safe must already be recorded, and all four story flags must be set during a new run. The route is deliberately stricter than simply repeating the Safe door choices.
Flag 1: take Santa’s bookmark
At Door 4, in the second-class cabin, accept or take the bookmark from Santa. Do not leave this interaction without receiving it.
Flag 2: answer the CO2 question correctly
In the kitchen, when June discusses CO2, select “It did seem rather odd”. This exact response is one of the required checks.

Flag 3: ask Seven about Ice-9
At Door 7, in the operating room, ask Seven whether he knows about Ice-9. The conversation must include that question.
Flag 4: give Clover the bookmark
At Door 7, give Clover the bookmark you obtained from Santa. Receiving the bookmark alone is not enough; the handoff to Clover is the fourth flag.
Finish through Door 1
After all four checks are complete, proceed through Door 1. If even one flag was missed, the route will not resolve as True. The game does not require you to guess which flag failed, so use the checklist above to audit each interaction on your next run.
What the iOS Syringe Ending changes
The iOS Novel adds one ending that is absent from both the DS game and the remastered Nonary Games release. The Syringe Ending is reached through Door 3. It is a version-specific branch, so DS and remaster players should not spend time looking for it in their route tables.
On iOS, count Syringe as a seventh ending alongside True, Coffin, Axe, Safe, Knife, and Submarine. The Safe-before-True requirement still applies to the True route; the additional iOS ending does not replace Safe or change the six shared endings.
A complete run plan you can follow
Run 1: clear a bad ending
Choose one of the Axe, Submarine, or Knife sequences from the route tables. This gives you an early ending and confirms that your edition is behaving as expected. Record the result before starting another run.

Runs 2 and 3: clear the other bad endings
Use a different valid sequence each time until Axe, Submarine, and Knife are all recorded. Their order is interchangeable. You do not need to set any of the True flags for these targets.
Run 4: preserve Coffin
Before Safe is saved, follow the True-oriented path far enough for the Coffin cliffhanger. Save the result. If Safe has already been completed, the same attempt will no longer produce the standalone Coffin Ending.
Run 5: unlock Safe
Take Door 5, then Door 8 after the casino, then Door 6 in the steam-engine section. Save Safe/Zero Lost when it appears. This establishes the prerequisite state for True.
Run 6: collect every True flag
Start a fresh run and deliberately perform all four checks: Santa’s bookmark at Door 4, the exact CO2 response in the kitchen, the Ice-9 question to Seven at Door 7, and the bookmark handoff to Clover at Door 7. Complete the final branch through Door 1.
Optional iOS run: Door 3
If you are playing the iOS Novel, use Door 3 to pursue Syringe. It is not part of the DS or remaster route set, so omit this step on other platforms.
Troubleshooting a missing ending
The game will not give me True
- Confirm that Safe/Zero Lost was completed and saved on an earlier run.
- Check all four True flags individually rather than relying on memory.
- At the kitchen scene, verify that the response was exactly “It did seem rather odd.”
- At Door 7, make sure you asked Seven about Ice-9 and later gave Clover the bookmark.
- Finish through Door 1 only after all four interactions are complete.
Coffin no longer appears
This is expected if Safe has already been saved. Coffin is the one separate ending that becomes permanently unavailable after Safe. In the remastered flowchart, True completion can mark Coffin as cleared, but that does not recreate the earlier cliffhanger as a separate result.

A bad-ending route produced the wrong result
Compare your choices with the exact sequences in the Axe, Submarine, and Knife tables. Also check whether you unintentionally completed some or all True-story requirements; those flags can move a run away from the bad-ending result.
I cannot find Syringe
Verify that you are using the iOS Novel. Door 3 leads to Syringe only in that edition. The Nintendo DS and remastered Nonary Games versions have no Syringe Ending.

The underlying door logic for the six shared endings is the same information used in the route tables above. Presentation and replay conveniences differ, but a remaster player should not expect the iOS-only Door 3 ending.

A small checklist prevents the most common completion mistake—forgetting which story flag was set on a previous run:
- Mark each ending immediately after the result appears.
- Keep Coffin unchecked until you have deliberately viewed it before Safe.
- For True, mark Santa’s bookmark, the kitchen response, Seven’s Ice-9 question, and Clover’s bookmark handoff separately.
- Write down your edition at the top of your notes: DS, remastered Nonary Games, or iOS Novel.
- On iOS, add a separate Syringe entry rather than assuming the six-ending checklist is complete.
Following the order and checks above gives DS and remastered players all six endings, including the otherwise missable Coffin result. iOS players can then add Door 3 for the seventh, edition-exclusive ending.
