How to Get Coal and Iron in 7 Days to Die

The dependable way to get large amounts of coal or iron in 7 Days to Die is to locate the matching surface ore node, mark it on your map, and mine down and outward from that point. The exposed node is usually a signpost for a larger underground pocket. Use a stone axe only as an emergency early-game tool; an iron pickaxe is the practical upgrade, while a steel pickaxe or auger is faster still. For small coal needs, burnt trees and wood debris in the Burnt Forest and Wasteland can be quicker than opening a mine. Iron can also come from scrapping iron items, smelting inputs in a Forge, and occasional container loot.

What to collect, and which route is fastest?

Coal and iron are both basic crafting resources, but they are not equally convenient to obtain. A dedicated ore pocket gives the best yield for a sustained project, while surface harvesting, scrapping, or looting is useful when you need only a little material or cannot safely mine yet.

Goal Best first option Why Main limitation
A small amount of coal early Chop burnt trees and wooden debris Quick collection in the Burnt Forest or Wasteland without a shaft Scattered supply; inefficient for large stockpiles
A large coal stockpile Follow a coal surface node underground One pocket can provide repeated blocks of ore Requires a suitable hard-block tool and tunnel support
A small amount of iron Scrap iron-based items or search containers No mining trip is required Yield depends on what you find and what you are willing to dismantle
Large quantities of iron Mine an iron node and its underground pocket Highest sustained collection rate Travel, tool durability, light, food, water, and collapse risk

There is no universal “amount needed by day 7.” Your target changes with recipes, world settings, game version, and whether you are investing in weapons, vehicles, a Forge, or base upgrades. Gather against a specific project rather than chasing an arbitrary number.

How surface ore nodes work

Surface nodes are the most dependable visual starting point for a large deposit. Coal nodes are generally dark and easy to distinguish from ordinary ground; iron appears as a recognizable ore outcrop. The visible block is a marker, not the entire resource. The useful material normally continues below and around it.

Underground ore can exist without a visible surface node, so failing to see an outcrop does not prove an area is empty. However, random digging is slower and harder to organize. When you do spot a node, place a map marker before breaking it. A marked location lets you return after a tool repair, a food run, or a later upgrade to steel tools.

Finding a node efficiently

  1. Travel with enough daylight, food, water, and inventory space to make the trip worthwhile.
  2. Scan exposed ground, road cuts, hillsides, and shallow terrain changes for the dark coal appearance or the distinct iron outcrop.
  3. Use the map marker function as soon as you identify the node. Record whether it is coal or iron in the marker name.
  4. Check the surroundings before digging. A location near a road or a defensible landmark is easier to revisit than an isolated hole in open terrain.

In Navezgane, the cited coal reference says surface nodes can regenerate at random locations after harvesting. Treat that as a possibility rather than a guaranteed respawn schedule: mark old sites, but do not plan a timed production cycle around one.

Step-by-step: mine a coal or iron pocket

  1. Prepare the loadout. Carry your best available hard-block tool, a spare tool or repair materials, light, food, water, and a way to place supports or structural blocks. Leave enough inventory space for ore and stone.
  2. Mark and inspect the node. Place the marker, look for nearby cliffs or buildings that could complicate a shaft, and decide where a safe entrance can be made.
  3. Open a controlled entrance. Start at the node and dig downward or into the slope rather than making a broad, unsupported cavity. Keep the entrance wide enough to move through while retaining support around it.
  4. Follow the ore. Mine the visible vein downward and then outward. When the material changes, probe a few adjacent blocks rather than abandoning the pocket immediately; deposits are commonly larger than the exposed surface block.
  5. Mine in short, recoverable sections. Clear a working face, collect the drops, and reinforce the area before extending the tunnel. This limits the size of any collapse and keeps the route legible.
  6. Manage durability and inventory. Return to repair or unload before your tool breaks or your inventory fills. A marked mine is more valuable than a risky final haul.
  7. Close or secure the entrance. Use recognizable blocks, a door, or a temporary cover so you can find the shaft again and avoid falling into it while travelling.

Choosing the right mining tool

Tool progression has a direct effect on how practical hard-block mining feels. The normal progression is stone axe, iron pickaxe, then steel pickaxe or auger.

Tool When it helps Trade-off
Stone axe Emergency early-game digging or opening a few blocks when nothing better is available Slow against hard ore and consumes durability quickly; not a sensible choice for a full deposit
Iron pickaxe First practical tool for a dedicated coal or iron run Needs iron, crafting progression, repairs, and stamina management
Steel pickaxe Faster sustained mining once steel crafting is available Higher progression and material requirements
Auger Rapid excavation for players who can support its fuel and progression needs Fuel consumption, noise, and the danger of opening a larger unsupported cavity quickly

Use the best hard-block option you can maintain, not merely the highest tier you have crafted. An iron pickaxe with repairs and a planned return trip is more useful than a nearly broken tool taken deep underground.

How to get coal

Mine coal ore

Coal ore remains in the terrain until you harvest it with a pickaxe; the mined block enters your inventory as coal. Start at a coal surface node when possible, then trace the pocket below it. Mining is the preferred route when you need coal for repeated crafting or fuel rather than a one-off recipe.

Harvest burnt trees and wood debris

Burnt trees and wooden debris in the Burnt Forest and Wasteland provide an alternative source. This is usually the fastest answer to a small early-game requirement because you can collect scattered material without constructing a shaft. The trade-off is volume: surface debris is isolated, so a large stockpile takes much longer than working a connected underground pocket.

Search containers and other loot

Coal can occasionally appear in containers or on zombies. Treat these finds as a bonus while looting rather than a dependable production method. If you are already clearing a building, take the coal; do not spend a whole day searching randomly when a marked node is available.

Use coal deliberately

Coal is used in gunpowder and wheel recipes and can be burned as fuel. Wood is generally the preferred renewable fuel, so reserve coal for recipes or situations where its higher-value use matters more than simply keeping a Forge running.

How to get iron

Mine iron ore and iron-based blocks

An iron surface outcrop is the clearest starting point for a sustained supply. Dig beneath it and work through the connected pocket. The iron-ore reference reports approximately 1–50 iron from mining an ore block, plus an additional 30–50 when a block is completely destroyed. Those figures are page-specific estimates, not a promise for every current build, tool, or bonus; verify behavior in your installed version when exact yield matters.

Scrap iron items

Iron-based items can be scrapped when you need a modest amount without travelling to a mine. This is convenient for early repairs or a missing component, but scrapping consumes the item, so compare its immediate material value with its usefulness as equipment, a building part, or a future Forge input.

Loot iron and containers

Containers can provide iron or iron-based items. Looting is efficient when it is already on your route, especially during a town run, but the contents are variable. It should supplement, not replace, a mining plan for a large construction project.

Smelt inputs in a Forge

Iron and iron-based items can be smelted in a Forge to produce Forge Iron, the form used by Forge crafting. Mining, scrapping, and looting therefore feed the same processing chain: obtain an iron input, place it in the Forge according to the current recipe interface, and collect Forge Iron when the smelting cycle completes. Keep the distinction clear in your inventory—raw iron acquisition and Forge output are not interchangeable labels for the same step.

Mining safety: prevent a small shaft from becoming a collapse

Underground pockets create structural-integrity hazards. Removing support blocks can make ceilings or adjoining walls fail, injuring you, blocking the route, and destroying the organization of your mine. The mining reference specifically warns players to be mindful of the hole they are digging.

  • Do not hollow out a huge room immediately. Extend the working face in manageable sections.
  • Leave or add support. Keep pillars where practical and reinforce roof spans before widening them.
  • Use light continuously. A dark tunnel hides drops, side branches, and sudden changes in elevation.
  • Keep an escape route. Know which direction leads back to the surface and avoid digging yourself into a dead end.
  • Secure the opening. Mark or cover the shaft so you, allies, and vehicles do not fall into it later.
  • Stop when conditions change. If the roof begins to crack, blocks shift, or the tunnel becomes too wide, back out and stabilize it before collecting more ore.

Which approach should you use?

Approach Speed for a small need Long-run yield Tool cost Risk Best use
Burnt trees and debris High for a few coal units in the right biome Low to medium and scattered Low Low, because there is little excavation Early coal, emergency gunpowder ingredients, quick fuel alternative
Coal surface node Medium while locating; high after the pocket is opened High when the vein is followed Medium to high Underground collapse and navigation Bulk coal gathering
Iron surface node Medium while locating; high after the pocket is opened High Medium to high Underground collapse and tool durability Forge production and major builds
Scrap iron items High if suitable items are already available Low to medium None beyond the item being sacrificed Loss of a useful item Bridging a shortfall without a mining trip
Looting containers or zombies Convenient when incidental Unpredictable Low Combat and time spent searching Supplementing other sources

  1. Stabilize survival first. Secure food, water, light, and a retreat route before travelling far for ore.
  2. Collect a stopgap amount. In the Burnt Forest or Wasteland, harvest burnt trees and debris if you need only a little coal. Scrap spare iron-based items if a small iron deficit is blocking a craft.
  3. Craft or obtain an iron pickaxe. Do not plan a deep deposit run around a stone axe unless there is no alternative.
  4. Map one nearby node. Choose the safest reachable coal or iron outcrop, mark it, and make a controlled entrance.
  5. Mine only what the next objective requires. Bring back enough ore for the immediate Forge batch, ammunition component, wheel, or repair instead of staying underground until every block is gone.
  6. Process iron promptly. Put iron inputs into the Forge so the smelting cycle advances while you perform other tasks.
  7. Upgrade the mine later. Return with a steel pickaxe or auger, additional supports, and more storage when a larger project justifies the risk.

Troubleshooting common problems

“I found the node, but there is no ore below it.”

Probe downward and in several horizontal directions. The exposed block is an indicator, not a guarantee that every adjacent block is ore. If the pocket truly ends, mark the site as exhausted and search for another node; underground ore can also occur without a visible outcrop.

“Mining takes too long.”

Check the tool tier and durability. Replace a stone axe with an iron pickaxe, then move to steel or an auger when your progression and fuel supply support it. Working a hard block with an emergency tool is the most common avoidable slowdown.

“My tunnel collapsed.”

Stop digging, retreat to a stable section, and reopen the route in smaller spans with pillars or other supports. Do not immediately widen the collapsed area; removing more roof blocks can trigger a second failure.

“I need iron but do not want to mine.”

Scrap expendable iron-based items, check containers while looting, and smelt the resulting inputs in a Forge. These methods are suitable for a shortfall, not a reliable substitute for a mine when the project requires large quantities.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“I cannot find coal in my current biome.”

Search for a coal node elsewhere, or travel to the Burnt Forest or Wasteland for burnt trees and debris. Containers and zombies can provide occasional coal, but their drops are not predictable enough to be your only plan.

Version and yield caveats

Reference pages identify these mechanics but do not provide one game-version number covering every tool, recipe, biome behavior, and yield. Updates and world settings can change details. Treat the approximately 1–50 iron per mined ore block and the additional 30–50 for completely destroying a block as estimates tied to the cited Iron Ore page, not universal guarantees. When a precise amount affects a major build, test one block in your current world and check the current in-game recipe and Forge interface.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to follow a visible surface node?

No. Underground ore can exist without a visible outcrop. A surface node is simply the most dependable visual starting point for locating a larger pocket.

Can a stone axe mine coal and iron?

It can serve as an early stopgap, but it is inefficient for hard ore. An iron pickaxe is the practical minimum for a dedicated run, with a steel pickaxe or auger offering better speed later.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is coal better used as fuel or saved for crafting?

Coal can fuel a Forge, but wood is generally preferred as a renewable fuel. Save coal for gunpowder and wheel recipes when those uses compete with fuel demand.

How much iron should I have by day 7?

There is no universal target. Required iron depends on your recipes, world settings, game version, and progression choices, so set a quantity for the next project instead of a calendar-based quota.

The Bottom Line

For dependable bulk supplies, mark a coal or iron surface node and mine its underground pocket with the best hard-block tool you can support. Use burnt wood and debris for small coal needs, scrap or loot iron when a mining trip is unnecessary, and support every tunnel you intend to revisit.
