Brittle Ice cracks and eventually breaks when a player or most mobs step on it, so treat it as a temporary surface rather than a normal building block.
What Brittle Ice is and when it is available
Brittle Ice is a new Java Edition snapshot block introduced in 26.4 Snapshot 4, published on October 13, 2026. Its natural generation is tied specifically to the new Ice Caves and their crevasse features. This means the mechanic is a snapshot feature and may change before a full release.

Unlike ordinary ice blocks, it cannot safely support repeated foot traffic: stepping on it starts a cracking process that ends with the block breaking.
How to find Brittle Ice in Ice Caves
Search crevasse surfaces
- Play a world running Java Edition 26.4 Snapshot 4 or a later version that still includes the feature.
- Locate an Ice Cave and inspect the surfaces around its crevasses.
- Look for Brittle Ice forming as part of the crevasse feature. The official changelog states that it generates naturally only in Ice Caves as part of that feature.
- Approach from a position that does not require standing on the block, because contact from a player or ordinary mob begins the cracking process.
Natural generation is currently restricted to Ice Caves; ordinary overworld exploration will not produce Brittle Ice outside that feature.

How to collect Brittle Ice with Silk Touch
Use a Silk Touch-enchanted tool
To obtain Brittle Ice as an item, break it with a tool carrying the Silk Touch enchantment. The official 26.4 Snapshot 4 changelog explicitly says, “It is obtainable with Silk Touch.” Without Silk Touch, do not expect the block itself to be returned for relocation or storage.
Because the block can break when stepped on, mine it from a safe angle and avoid using it as a platform while preparing the collection. Once collected, Silk Touch also gives you the practical option of moving the block to a controlled build or test area.

How to make Brittle Ice from Blue Ice and water
Set up horizontal water flow
- Place a Blue Ice block.
- Arrange a water source or channel so water flows onto one side of the Blue Ice.
- Make sure the water reaches the Blue Ice horizontally; the documented mechanic is water flowing onto the block from the side.
- When the flowing water borders the Blue Ice in that arrangement, it changes into Brittle Ice.
The official wording is: “It can also be created by water flowing onto a Blue Ice block.” The recipe is therefore a world interaction, not a crafting-table recipe. You need access to both Blue Ice and water, but you do not need to locate an Ice Cave for this method.

What happens when you walk on Brittle Ice?
When a player or mob steps on Brittle Ice, it starts to crack and eventually breaks. Plan movement so you cross it quickly, and do not rely on it as a permanent bridge, floor or landing surface. Standing still increases the chance that the block will finish breaking beneath you.

The Frostbite exception
The documented exception is the Frostbite mob. Frostbite can walk on Brittle Ice without breaking it. Other players and mobs should be treated as capable of triggering the cracking behavior.

Practical safety checklist
- Use Silk Touch before attempting to collect a naturally generated block.
- Approach crevasses from solid ground and avoid stepping onto Brittle Ice unnecessarily.
- For a player-built supply, create the block beside the Blue Ice and water setup rather than using the new block as a work platform.
- Keep a route back to stable blocks when testing how quickly the surface cracks.
- Reserve Brittle Ice for traps, timed crossings and visual effects unless you specifically want a block that breaks under foot traffic.
Version caveat
All of these mechanics are documented for Minecraft: Java Edition 26.4 Snapshot 4, the testing release published October 13, 2026. Snapshot features are experimental, so generation rules, conversion behavior or mob interactions can be adjusted in later snapshots or before release.
