How do I get better virtual try-on results in ChatGPT?
ChatGPT can create a clothing or accessory preview either through a listing’s Try on button or from images you upload in a conversation. In the listing flow, take or upload a selfie to view the generated image. You can also upload a picture of a garment or accessory and ask how it could look on you. - Choose the reference images. Use one image to show the person and another to show the garment when you have both. Identify each image’s role in your prompt.
- Describe a single clothing change. Say what garment to apply and ask ChatGPT to leave the rest of the image alone.
- Set clear boundaries. Specify which parts of the person and scene should stay the same, such as face, body shape, pose, hair, expression, identity, background, camera angle, and framing. OpenAI’s image-generation prompting guide uses this kind of preservation instruction for virtual try-on.
- Refine one thing at a time. If something is off, follow up with one concrete correction—for example, keep the pose but change the jacket color. This is a practical way to make the request less ambiguous, not a guarantee of greater accuracy.
Try this prompt pattern, adjusting the bracketed text to your images: “Use the first image as the person reference and the second as the garment reference. Replace only the clothing with [garment]. Preserve the person’s face, body shape, skin tone, pose, and background. Match the original lighting and shadows. Do not change anything else.”
ChatGPT Images can also edit an uploaded image based on a conversational instruction or a selected area. The ChatGPT Images help page describes those editing options.

What photo should I upload for a virtual try-on?
OpenAI’s try-on documentation does not publish a formal checklist for selfie pose, camera distance, background, lighting, or how much clothing must be visible. As practical starting points—not official pass/fail requirements—choose an image where you and the area to be changed are easy to see. Good general lighting and fewer obstructions over that area can make the visual request clearer; experiment if the first result misses what you wanted.
When taking a new reference photo, a phone stand or tripod can be a convenient hands-free aid, but it is optional and does not make the result a reliable fit assessment.

If ChatGPT changes too much of the person or scene, specify what should remain unchanged. OpenAI’s prompt guidance recommends preserving the wearer and scene while replacing the clothing, and matching the added garment’s lighting, shadows, and color temperature to the original photo so the edit blends more naturally. That is guidance for visual integration, not a promise that the garment will look exactly as it would in person.
If an image does not upload or is read incorrectly
The ChatGPT Image Inputs FAQ lists PNG, JPEG, and non-animated GIF as supported still-image formats, with a limit of 20 MB per image. It notes that unclear or ambiguous images may be interpreted less accurately, images are resized, and original file names and metadata are not processed. Check OpenAI’s image-input FAQ if an upload fails or the reference is being misread.

Why does my AI try-on look different from me?
A generated try-on is an image edit based on visual references and instructions, not a measurement of your body or the garment. If the prompt does not clearly distinguish the person reference from the garment reference—or does not say what must stay unchanged—the output may alter the wearer or scene as well as the clothes. Unclear images can also be interpreted less accurately, according to OpenAI’s image-input guidance.
When reviewing successive attempts, look at whether the same person and pose remain, whether visible garment details and color resemble the reference, whether lighting and shadows look coherent, and whether anything you asked to preserve changed. These are visual checks only; they do not establish physical fit.

Can ChatGPT tell me whether clothes will fit?
No. OpenAI’s Shopping with ChatGPT Search help gives this warning: “Try-on images may not represent the product or your appearance exactly and do not guarantee fit or size.” A convincing preview can help you explore a style, but it cannot confirm exact color, garment construction, physical drape, or how a particular size will fit your body.

How do I manage saved reference photos?
OpenAI says reference photos can be reused, changed, or removed under Settings → Personalization → Reference photos. Use that setting to manage the photos associated with the try-on experience.
