Better earbud sound usually comes from troubleshooting before buying anything: reseat each earbud for a comfortable seal, clear visible debris safely, then make small EQ or sound-personalization changes. Reduce competing noise instead of simply turning up the volume, and consider replacement tips only when they are compatible with your model. The exact controls and results vary by ear shape, earbud design, device and listening environment.
Start with this five-step sequence
- Refit both earbuds. Try every supplied ear-tip size, including different sizes in your left and right ears. Reseat the earbuds until they are secure without painful pressure.
- Inspect and clean. Look at the removable tips and exposed speaker or microphone mesh. Follow the maker’s cleaning method and remove only surface debris; never push a tool into an opening.
- Adjust the sound. If your earbuds, phone or companion app offers EQ, presets or personalization, make one modest change at a time and compare at the same comfortable volume.
- Control the surroundings. A quieter environment or an appropriate noise-cancellation mode can make detail easier to hear without increasing playback level.
- Try accessories last. Replacement silicone or memory-foam tips can help only when the earbuds have removable tips and the accessory fits that model.
This order isolates the most common causes of low volume, weak bass or unclear speech without assuming that one setting or accessory improves every pair.

Why fit changes what you hear
In-ear earbuds depend on the relationship between the nozzle, ear tip and ear canal. A loose tip allows sound to leak and lets outside noise compete with the music. Bass is usually the first part of the sound that seems to disappear, while voices may sound distant or thin. A tip that is too large can create pressure, instability or discomfort, causing you to loosen the earbud and lose the seal anyway.

Test each ear separately
Your ear canals are not necessarily the same shape or size. Try the supplied sizes in each ear independently rather than assuming both sides need the same tip. Play a familiar track with steady bass and vocals while gently rotating or reseating each earbud. If the sound becomes fuller when you press an earbud inward, the original fit may be leaking; do not keep applying pressure as a permanent solution.
Use a fit or seal check when available
Some earbuds provide a fit test in their app or Bluetooth settings. Run it with the earbuds positioned as you normally wear them, then test again after changing one tip. A pass result does not make an uncomfortable fit acceptable, and a product without a fit test can still seal well. The practical target is a stable, comfortable seal that survives normal head movement.
Recognize a poor seal
- Bass improves noticeably when you press the earbud inward or cover the ear.
- One side sounds louder because its tip seals differently.
- External noise leaks through even when the earbuds are playing at a moderate level.
- The earbud feels loose, shifts while speaking or walking, or requires constant adjustment.
Change one variable at a time: tip size first, then insertion angle or rotation. If a model uses open, vented or non-sealing eartips, do not force a deep seal; its acoustic design may intentionally allow outside sound.
Clean the tips and mesh without damaging the earbuds
Earwax, dust and skin oils can collect on removable tips and the grille covering the speaker. Google warns that “Debris blocking the speaker or microphone meshes can reduce volume and cause audio issues.” The warning appears in Google’s Pixel Buds audio troubleshooting guidance; it identifies a plausible cause, not a guarantee that cleaning will improve every model.

A cautious cleaning procedure
- Remove the earbuds from your ears and disconnect or power them down according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Take off removable silicone tips. Inspect the inside and outside of each tip and the visible earbud mesh under good light.
- Wipe or brush away loose surface debris only with the method the maker permits. Google’s guidance recommends gentle brushing for relevant Pixel Buds; use a soft brush only when your own product instructions allow it.
- Keep unapproved liquids, sharp objects and compressed air away from openings. Do not push cotton swabs, pins or picks into the speaker or microphone mesh.
- Let parts that were cleaned according to the maker’s instructions dry completely before reinstalling the tips, charging or wearing the earbuds.
Check the result after cleaning
Play the same recording at the same volume before and after cleaning. If both earbuds remain quiet, the problem may be a source-device setting, a damaged component or a blocked internal path that requires the manufacturer’s service instructions. If only one side is affected, compare tip fit and visible mesh on that side first; avoid assuming that a software balance control is the cause until the physical checks are complete.
Use EQ and sound personalization as controlled experiments
Equalization changes the relative level of frequency ranges. It can make bass more prominent, bring voices forward or reduce a tonal imbalance, but it cannot repair a blocked grille, a poor seal or a failing driver. EQ is also a preference adjustment: a setting that sounds clearer for a podcast may make music harsh, and a bass boost can mask detail at higher playback levels.
Start with the smallest useful change
- Disable any existing EQ, loudness or sound-enhancement effects temporarily so you know the baseline.
- Choose a familiar song and a spoken recording. Set a comfortable volume and keep it unchanged while comparing settings.
- Try one preset or one narrow adjustment, then listen for the specific result you wanted. Avoid changing bass, treble, balance and spatial effects simultaneously.
- Keep the setting only if it improves the material you actually use. Recheck at a lower volume; a change that works only when loud may be adding fatigue rather than useful clarity.
For supported Pixel Buds, Google documents presets such as balanced, heavy bass, vocal boost and clarity in its Pixel Buds EQ instructions. The names and available controls can differ by model, phone operating system, app and firmware. A preset may also apply only to audio routed through a particular device or app.

Do not confuse channel balance with EQ
A left-right balance slider changes how much signal reaches each side; it does not make either earbud inherently louder or restore missing bass. Check that the balance control is centered before using EQ. If one ear sounds consistently quieter across several devices and recordings after refitting and cleaning, stop increasing that side’s volume and investigate the earbud or your hearing rather than compensating indefinitely.
Reduce competing noise before raising playback volume
Street noise, engines, ventilation and nearby conversation mask detail. Turning up playback can make the music easier to hear but increases exposure. The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association notes that noise-canceling earbuds can reduce the urge to raise volume in its safe-listening shopping guidance.
Choose the right listening mode
- Noise cancellation: Use it in environments where reducing steady outside noise helps you listen at a lower level. Performance varies with the earbud, seal and type of noise.
- Transparency or awareness: Use an awareness mode when you need traffic, announcements or conversation. The amount and character of outside sound differ by model.
- Passive isolation: A good seal from the correct tip can reduce some outside sound even without electronic cancellation.
Noise reduction is not a reason to ignore your surroundings. Follow the product’s mode guidance, maintain awareness near roads and machinery, and remove an earbud when you need to hear an important warning clearly.
Keep volume and duration in view
Google’s undated Hearing Wellness support page, accessed in 2026, says that listening above 80 dB for extended periods can eventually affect hearing. That is general manufacturer guidance, not a guaranteed safe-or-unsafe boundary for every person or situation. Use the lowest level that provides clear detail, take breaks during long sessions and treat ringing, muffled hearing or discomfort as a reason to stop and seek appropriate professional advice.

When replacement ear tips are worth trying
Accessories are conditional, not a universal upgrade. First use the sizes supplied with the earbuds. Consider replacements only when the earbuds have a removable-tip design, the nozzle dimensions are compatible and the original tips cannot provide a comfortable, stable seal.
Silicone tips
Different silicone shapes and sizes can change stability and sealing. A model-compatible set may solve a fit problem, but a tip that fits the nozzle can still feel uncomfortable or alter how deeply the earbud sits. Verify the exact earbud model and nozzle attachment before ordering; generic appearance is not proof of compatibility.
Memory-foam tips
Google’s Pixel Buds guidance identifies memory foam as an option to try when its silicone tips do not fit well. See the UK-English support page for that model-specific note: Google Pixel Buds audio troubleshooting. Foam tips compress during insertion and expand in the ear, so they may improve stability for some listeners, while others may dislike the pressure, heat, insertion depth or maintenance. They still must match the earbud nozzle and charging-case clearance.

- Confirm that your earbuds accept removable tips rather than a fixed or open design.
- Match the replacement’s nozzle attachment and dimensions to the exact model.
- Check that the installed tip does not cover a vent, sensor or microphone.
- Close the charging case with the new tips installed; forcing the lid can damage the case or earbuds.
- Retest fit, comfort, call performance and sound at the same volume after installation.
Which adjustment should you try first?
| Adjustment | Best match | Compatibility questions | Main caution |
|---|---|---|---|
| Refit or change supplied tips | Weak bass, sound leakage, unstable earbuds or unequal left-right loudness | What sizes came with the earbuds? Does each ear need a different size? Is a fit check available? | A tighter fit should remain comfortable; do not force deep insertion. |
| Gentle cleaning | Sudden low volume, muffled output or call problems after visible debris appears | What cleaning method does the maker approve? Is the mesh exposed and accessible? | Never insert tools or unapproved liquids into openings. |
| EQ or personalization | Preference changes such as more bass, clearer voices or a different tonal balance | Does the model, device or app provide the control? Does it apply to all media? | It cannot fix physical blockage or a poor seal and may encourage louder listening. |
| Noise cancellation or a quieter setting | Detail masked by steady outside noise | Does the earbud offer the mode, and do you need environmental awareness? | Modes vary by environment; preserve awareness where required. |
| Replacement silicone or foam tips | Supplied tips never seal comfortably on a removable-tip model | Are the nozzle, attachment and case dimensions compatible? | There is no guaranteed improvement, and an incompatible tip can obstruct vents or prevent charging. |
Troubleshoot by the symptom you hear
“The earbuds sound quiet”
- Check the source device’s media volume and confirm that a left-right balance or hearing-protection limit has not been set unusually low.
- Reseat both earbuds and test a different supplied tip size.
- Inspect the speaker mesh and clean only as the manufacturer permits.
- Try the earbuds with another device or recording. If the problem follows the earbuds, continue with physical checks and the maker’s support process; if it stays with one app or device, inspect that app’s audio settings.
“The bass is weak”
Start with the seal, not a bass boost. Pressing the earbud gently into place and hearing bass return is a strong indication that fit needs attention. Test each ear independently, then try a modest bass preset if your model offers one. Google’s Pixel Buds support page discusses low bass and fit-specific troubleshooting; its advice is model-specific, so do not treat a preset or tip as a guaranteed solution for other earbuds.
Best Value
- Slow rebound earphone, enhance the comfort of the headset to wear. Available and general; Soft and fitting your ear, long time to wear without swelling.
- We have three pairs of the item, includes small, medium and large, suitable for most earphone tips from 5mm-7mm.
- Memory foam tips(ear foam cotton) can produce the seal in the ear canal, so that music is almost no loss to reverberate in your ear canal, feeling different.
- The seal can isolate the external noise interference, even in the noisy environment, without increasing the volume up to over the noise, which can protect your ears.
- The storage box can well protect your earbud tips from being damage, also can be used to put original tips
“Voices are hard to understand”
Reduce competing noise, verify a comfortable seal and try a vocal or clarity preset when available. For supported devices, sound-personalization controls may offer another option. Compare a spoken recording at the same comfortable volume rather than judging clarity only after turning the earbuds up.
“Only one earbud is quieter”
- Swap tip sizes between ears or test each earbud in the opposite ear to separate an ear-fit issue from an earbud issue.
- Check both speaker meshes for debris and clean according to the maker’s instructions.
- Confirm that the device’s balance control is centered and that mono or accessibility audio settings are intentional.
- Test another device and recording. A persistent difference that remains after these checks may require manufacturer service; do not compensate by repeatedly increasing one channel.
“Calls sound bad even though music is fine”
Check the microphone openings as well as the speaker mesh, because debris can affect call audio. Refit both earbuds and test in a quieter environment. Noise-control behavior and microphone processing differ by model, so use the manufacturer’s call-troubleshooting steps if the problem persists.
Build a simple maintenance routine
- Wipe the earbuds and removable tips as often as the maker recommends, especially after exercise or dusty travel.
- Keep tips attached securely and inspect them for tears, deformation or blocked passages.
- Store the earbuds in their case instead of loose in a pocket where lint can enter the mesh.
- Recheck fit after replacing tips, changing glasses or helmets, or switching to a different earbud position.
- Review EQ after changing devices or apps; a setting saved in one ecosystem may not follow the earbuds elsewhere.
The most reliable improvement is the one you can reproduce: a comfortable seal, unobstructed mesh, a modest setting that suits your content and a listening level that does not require you to ignore discomfort. Because fit, controls and acoustic design differ, evaluate each change on your own earbuds rather than assuming a popular preset or accessory will work universally.
