What Nano Banana 2.1 is—and what “better results” means
Nano Banana 2.1 is Google’s current name for an image-generation and conversational-editing model in the Gemini API. The documented model ID is gemini-nano-banana-2.1. Google says the October 2026 model version improves prompt adherence and text rendering, supports multi-turn character consistency, and accepts up to 14 reference images. These statements describe intended product capabilities; they do not guarantee that every prompt will produce a faithful image.

In practice, a better result is one that matches the brief on six dimensions:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Subject and action: the right person, product or object doing the requested thing.
- Composition: useful framing, viewpoint, spacing and visual hierarchy.
- Reference fidelity: important shapes, materials, colors and identities carried over from supplied images.
- Text and layout: the requested words rendered accurately and placed where they belong.
- Style and lighting: a coherent visual treatment rather than a vague “cool” look.
- Edit stability: details you asked to keep remain intact after a change.
Use those criteria when choosing between variants or deciding whether an edit actually helped. They are practical evaluation criteria inferred from Google’s controls and guidance, not a published benchmark.

Build the prompt around the image’s job
Start with an action verb such as “create,” “generate” or “draw.” Then describe the image in the order that helps the model understand the assignment: subject, action, context, composition, visual treatment and output format. Google’s prompting guidance favors concrete positive descriptions and adding detail incrementally rather than dumping every possible adjective into the first request. See the Google DeepMind prompt guide and Google Cloud’s prompting guide.
A practical prompt scaffold
Create [image type] of [subject] [action], in [location or context]. Compose it as [framing, viewpoint and layout], with [lighting and key visual details], in [style]. Use [aspect ratio and output format].
This is a useful synthesis of Google’s recommendations, not a magic formula or quoted template. Replace each bracketed item with information that matters for the image. A short prompt can work when the scene is simple; a long prompt is not automatically better.
Example: from vague to controllable
“Make a coffee ad” leaves the subject, audience, camera position and layout open. A more useful brief is:
Create a premium product photograph of a matte-black pour-over coffee dripper filled with dark coffee, on a pale oak table in a quiet morning kitchen. Use a three-quarter close-up from table height, with the dripper on the right third and clear negative space on the left for copy. Use soft window light from the upper left, gentle steam, natural shadows and a restrained editorial style. Make it a vertical 4:5 social post.
The second version does not guarantee success, but it gives the model decisions it can act on: what the object is doing, where it is, how it is framed, how it is lit and where later text can go.
Add detail in passes
Generate a first pass with the essential subject, action and composition. If the structure is right but the mood is wrong, add lighting or color direction. If the framing is right but the product is inaccurate, clarify shape, material or viewpoint. This isolates changes, making it easier to tell which instruction helped.
Describe composition, viewpoint and lighting precisely
Terms such as “cinematic,” “professional” or “beautiful” are broad. Pair them with observable choices:

- Framing: extreme close-up, waist-up portrait, full-body, overhead flat lay or wide establishing shot.
- Viewpoint: eye level, low angle, top-down, three-quarter view or profile.

Say what must be visible and what should remain uncluttered. For an infographic, do not merely list labels: request the information hierarchy and visual organization, such as a left-to-right timeline or a top-to-bottom flowchart. Google specifically recommends asking for a timeline or flowchart when that is the intended structure.

References are most useful when the prompt explains what each one contributes and how it relates to the new scene. Google Cloud describes the pattern as references plus a relationship instruction plus the new scenario. Instead of uploading three images and saying “combine these,” identify them:
Use Reference 1 for the chair’s silhouette and proportions. Use Reference 2 for the woven fabric texture and rust color. Use Reference 3 for the sunny courtyard setting. Create a new scene showing the same chair beside a small round table in that courtyard, keeping the chair’s proportions while adapting the lighting to the outdoor setting.
A sketch can supply structure, a fabric swatch can supply texture, and a separate photograph can supply the environment. State whether a reference is a source of identity, shape, material, color, pose or background. This reduces the chance that the model treats every image as an undifferentiated collage.
How many references to use
The API model page currently states support for up to 14 reference images. That is an input limit, not a promise that using 14 images will improve fidelity. Add only images that resolve a real ambiguity, and explain the role of each one. More references can introduce conflicting details if their relationships are not explicit.
Keep recurring characters and objects named
For a sequence, assign stable names such as “Maya,” “the red delivery bike” and “the blue ceramic mug.” Describe the traits that must persist—hair, clothing colors, facial features, proportions, logos or distinctive marks—and use the same names in later prompts. Google describes character consistency for up to four characters and object fidelity for up to 10 objects in multi-image fusion. Those are vendor-described capability limits, not guarantees for every output.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteKeep Maya’s short silver hair, round glasses and green jacket from Reference 1. Keep the red delivery bike’s frame shape and yellow rear basket from Reference 2. In the next scene, show Maya locking the same bike outside a rainy train station.
When continuity matters, use clear, high-quality reference images with the relevant subject visible and avoid mixing several incompatible versions of the same object.

Make text and layout explicit
Put exact words in quotation marks. Specify the typography, hierarchy and placement instead of hoping the model infers them:
Create a horizontal event poster. Put the exact headline “NIGHT MARKET” at the top in bold condensed sans serif, white lettering. Put “Friday, 18 October” below it in smaller regular sans serif. Leave the lower-right quarter clear for a logo. Use a 16:9 layout with a dark blue street scene and warm amber lanterns.
Quote marks distinguish copy from instructions. Include capitalization, punctuation, line breaks, color, weight and approximate position when those details matter. If the image is for a vertical social post, say so; if it is a widescreen background, specify that instead. Google’s guide recommends stating the aspect ratio and intended destination or format.
Infographics, diagrams and charts
Describe the structure before listing content. For example: “Create a left-to-right three-step flowchart with three equal rounded boxes, arrows between them, a title at the top and one short sentence inside each box.” Then provide the exact labels in quotation marks. This gives the model a hierarchy to render rather than a pile of words.

Resolution and upscaling
Google says some product surfaces expose 2K or 4K upscaling controls. Availability depends on where you use Gemini, so treat those controls as surface-specific rather than universal. Choose the aspect ratio and composition first; upscale only after the layout and text are acceptable.
Edit conversationally, one change at a time
Gemini Apps lets you edit an image generated in Gemini or upload an image for editing. It also supports uploading multiple images to make a new composite. After inspecting the output, request a focused change in natural language and name the details to preserve. Google’s user guidance and Cloud documentation both support this conversational workflow: Gemini Apps Help.
- Generate the base image. Include the subject, action, scene, composition and format.
- Inspect against your brief. Note the single most important mismatch first.
- Ask for one targeted edit. Say what to change and what must stay unchanged.
- Check for collateral changes. Confirm that faces, object proportions, text and framing did not drift.
- Continue in small steps. Keep the conversation’s established names and constraints.
Useful edit instructions include “replace the background with a plain warm-gray studio wall while keeping the product, camera angle and shadows,” “change the jacket from navy to forest green while preserving the face and pose,” or “remove the extra mug from the left side and keep the headline exactly as written.” Rewriting the entire prompt after every output can discard useful context and make it harder to identify the source of a change.

When an edit keeps damaging the image
- If the model changes too much, explicitly list the elements to preserve: subject identity, crop, lighting direction, text and object count.
- If a replacement is not isolated, identify its exact location: “the background object behind the subject on the right.”
- If a character drifts, restate the stable name and defining traits, and attach the clearest reference again if the product surface permits it.
- If text changes unexpectedly, repeat the exact copy in quotation marks and ask for no other wording changes.
Ask for variations before committing to a direction
For early exploration, request distinct alternatives rather than near-duplicates: “Create four product mockups with the same bottle and label, using a marble kitchen, a dark studio, a sunlit shelf and a minimal pastel set.” Google DeepMind recommends asking for multiple images at once. Treat the results as creative directions to compare, not as a promise that every variant will share identical layout or quality.
Recommended Free Tools
Choose the strongest direction using a fixed checklist:
| Criterion | Question to ask |
|---|---|
| Subject and action | Is the requested subject doing the right thing? |
| Composition | Does the crop and placement leave room for the intended use? |
| References | Are the important shapes, materials and identities preserved? |
| Text | Are every word, character and line break correct? |
| Style and lighting | Do the visual treatment and light match the brief? |
| Edit stability | Did the requested change avoid damaging details worth keeping? |
Once you select a direction, stop exploring and make focused edits to that version.

The same prompting principles apply in Gemini Apps and through the API, but access and controls differ. Google’s API documentation lists these model limits:
| API capability | Documented value | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Reference images per prompt | Up to 14 | An input-count limit, not a quality guarantee. |
| Character consistency | Up to 4 characters | A vendor-described capability for multi-turn consistency. |
| Object fidelity in multi-image fusion | Up to 10 objects | A vendor-described capability, not a promise of perfect preservation. |
| Input tokens | 131,072 | An API context limit; most consumer prompts will not approach it. |
| Output tokens | 32,768 | An API response limit, generally unrelated to ordinary image prompting. |
The model page reports these values and was last updated October 6, 2026: Google AI for Developers. Limits and controls can change, so check that page when implementing an application.
Access, age and regional constraints
Google’s Gemini product page says Nano Banana 2.1 access is provided to Google AI plan users and describes higher image-generation limits for paid plans: Gemini’s image-generation overview. Exact quotas, plan names and availability are product details that can change.
Best Value
Gemini Apps Help says image editing is not available to users under 18. Google’s connected Google Photos editing instructions specify that users must be 18 or older in the United States and use a personal Google Account; regional restrictions also apply. Confirm the current rules in Google’s help documentation before promising a workflow to a team or audience.
Troubleshooting common failures
The image has the right subject but the wrong scene
Separate subject from setting and state the relationship: “Place the same ceramic lamp on a desk in a quiet home office; do not copy the reference background.” Add viewpoint, crop and lighting. If the model still imports unwanted background details, provide a cleaner subject reference or request a new generation before attempting an edit.
The reference object looks generic
Name the traits that identify it—silhouette, dimensions, material, color blocking, distinctive hardware—and assign the reference a specific role. “Use Reference 1 for the exact frame shape and yellow basket” is more actionable than “use this bike.”
Text is misspelled or rearranged
Put the exact wording in quotation marks, specify typography and location, and reduce the amount of copy. Ask for a layout such as a poster, label or flowchart rather than an unstructured paragraph. If one word remains wrong, make a text-only follow-up edit and instruct the model to preserve every other element.
Characters change between scenes
Use stable names, repeat defining traits and keep the clearest character reference available. Describe the new action and setting separately from the identity details. Google’s consistency claims improve the odds but do not remove the need for review.
The model ignores a long prompt
Remove decorative adjectives and keep only decisions that affect the image. Put the main subject and action first, then composition, lighting, style and format. Generate a simpler base and add secondary details through follow-up edits.
Reusable prompt patterns
Single-image generation
Create a [format] of [subject] [action] in [context]. Use [framing and viewpoint], [lighting], and [style]. Keep [must-have details] visible. Use a [aspect ratio] composition for [destination].
Reference-led generation
Use Reference 1 for [identity or structure], Reference 2 for [material or color], and Reference 3 for [environment]. Create [new scenario]. Preserve [specific traits] while adapting [details that should change] to the new scene.
Targeted edit
Change only [element and location]. Keep [subject identity, crop, lighting, text and other details] unchanged. The replacement should be [specific appearance and relationship to the scene].
Multi-scene continuity
Use the same [character or object name] as before. Preserve [stable visual traits]. In this scene, show [new action] in [new setting], with [composition, lighting and format].
A final checklist before you accept an output
- Does the first sentence of your prompt state the image’s job?
- Are the subject, action and setting concrete?
- Did you specify framing, viewpoint, lighting and background?
- Does every reference image have a named role?
- Are recurring characters and objects named consistently?
- Are exact words in quotation marks with typography and placement instructions?
- Did you state aspect ratio and destination format?
- Are you making one understandable edit at a time?
- After each edit, did you check the details that should have remained unchanged?
- Are access, age, region, plan and quota assumptions verified for the product surface you are using?
The most reliable workflow is therefore brief-led generation, role-labeled references, explicit text and layout instructions, then small conversational edits. Use the model’s documented limits as boundaries, not as promises, and judge every variant against the visual requirements of the final use.
