For better results, match your vacuum’s cleaner head, brush-bar setting and suction mode to the floor—and follow the instructions for your exact model. Controls vary: a setting that helps on one vacuum can be unsuitable for another. Check the owner’s manual first, especially for delicate rugs, loop-pile carpet and easily marked floors.
Which settings should you use on carpet and hard floors?
Start with the floor setting and cleaner head recommended in your vacuum’s manual. Brush-roll behavior and mode names are not consistent across brands or models, so treat the examples below as product-specific guidance rather than universal rules.

These are examples from a particular Shark manual and Dyson product guidance, not a performance comparison. Do not assume that modes with similar names—or sliders and brush-bar switches—work alike on another vacuum.

How should you clean a Dyson brush bar?
Hair, thread and other debris wrapped around a brush bar can interfere with its operation. Dyson’s troubleshooting guidance also recommends checking the floor-tool opening for blockages. Use your model’s user guide for the safe way to access and clean the bar; if it is washable, let it dry completely before refitting it. A separate brush-cleaning tool is not automatically necessary, and a generic tool may not be approved for every model. Use only cleaning methods and accessories compatible with your vacuum.
How do you protect delicate carpet and flooring?
Check the flooring maker’s care instructions before using a rotating brush. In its V6 SV05 Absolute manual, Dyson warns that a rotating brush bar may fuzz some carpets and damage certain carpet types or floors. That warning is specific to the documented model, but it is a useful reason to verify compatibility rather than assume a powered brush is safe for every surface.

For highly polished floors, the same manual advises checking that the underside of the floor tool and the brushes are free of foreign objects that could leave marks. If your vacuum has a brush-bar switch, use it only as directed for your model and surface.

How can you improve everyday cleaning technique?
- Clear the floor tool when pickup seems poor. Check the brush bar and openings for hair, thread and debris, and follow the manual’s instructions to remove anything lodged there.
- Adjust suction only with controls intended for your cleaner head. For example, Dyson’s V15 slider is described for that product family; its positions should not be mapped onto another vacuum’s controls.
- Guide the head gently around furniture. Dyson suggests small wrist movements to steer its cleaner head. This is a handling tip, not a guarantee of improved pickup.
- Check compatibility before replacing parts. Verify that a replacement brush bar, filter or other accessory is listed for your precise vacuum model. Dyson’s support site provides model-specific guides and parts information.
Which Dyson head is for carpet?
The appropriate head depends on the Dyson model and the carpet. Consult the user guide for your exact vacuum rather than choosing by brand alone; Dyson’s model support pages provide product-specific information. If the carpet is delicate or loop-pile, check its care instructions before using a rotating brush.
