How to Get Better at Wordle: Strategies for Solving in Fewer Guesses

To solve Wordle in fewer guesses, make each turn do one of two jobs: identify a likely answer or eliminate as many alternatives as possible. Start with a familiar word that tests several common, non-repeating letters; then use the green, yellow and absent-letter clues to narrow the field. There is no permanently best opener: the right choice depends on whether you value information, a chance at an immediate solve, or the restrictions of hard mode.

What the clues tell you

The NYT Wordle gives you six guesses to find a five-letter answer. Green marks a letter in the correct position, yellow means the letter is in the answer but in a different position, and an unmarked letter is absent. Those basics are stated in the Wordle rulebook, which describes the physical game as playing like the digital version.

  • Green: keep the letter in that position.
  • Yellow: use the letter again, but move it to a different position.
  • Unmarked: generally rule the letter out. If a guess contains a repeated letter, interpret the feedback carefully; one copy can be marked while another is not.

After each turn, treat the board as a set of constraints. A guess that ignores a green or yellow clue may be legal in standard mode, but it throws away information you already earned.

How to choose a first guess

Look for a valid, familiar word that tests several common letters in useful positions and avoids repeats. A starter with five different letters can reveal more than one that spends a slot on a duplicate, though no single word is best under every scoring method or answer list.

TechRadar’s page, accessed October 3, 2026, reports WordleBot’s standard-mode top tier as SLATE, CRANE, TRACE, CRATE and CARTE, each rated 99/100. For hard mode, it lists CLASP, SCALD and PLACE as tied high choices. These are dated reported rankings, not a permanent NYT rule or an independently confirmed live ranking; the page also records that recommendations have changed. See TechRadar’s starter-word report.

Choose between a likely-answer opener and an information-first opener based on what you want from the first turn:

  • To preserve a chance of solving immediately: choose a plausible answer word that also covers useful letters.
  • To prioritize elimination: choose a word that tests many informative letters, even if it is unlikely to be the answer itself.
  • To make the habit easy to sustain: choose a familiar word you can recall reliably. A theoretically strong word is less useful if you keep forgetting it or misreading its feedback.

The Times reported in 2022 that ADIEU was used by an average of five percent of users each day during the period it covered, calling it the favorite starting word. That describes popularity, not proof that ADIEU is the strongest opener. The same report found that among players with more than 10 games in the June 15–August 22 period, 28% used the same starter at least 90% of the time: consistency, again, not effectiveness. The Times’ 2022 report also quotes one player’s reason for choosing ADIEU: “It contains all the vowels except O and possibly Y.” That explains a preference; it does not establish a strategy advantage.

How to make each follow-up guess count

  1. Record the pattern. Lock green letters into their known positions and note where every yellow letter cannot go.
  2. Remove absent letters. Avoid reusing letters marked absent, while accounting for the possibility of repeated letters in the answer.
  3. Compare plausible words. Identify candidates that fit every clue, then look for one that also tests common letters you have not tried.
  4. Choose between solving and probing. If only a few candidates remain, try the most plausible answer. If many remain, a guess that distinguishes among them can be more valuable than committing early to one uncertain candidate.

Letter frequency is a useful guide, not a complete strategy. TechRadar reports E, A, R, O and T as its five most frequent letters across the answer list it analyzed, with counts of 1,230, 975, 897, 753 and 729 respectively. In that same dataset, common first letters include S, C, B, P and T; common final letters include E, Y, T, R and L. These are counts from TechRadar’s analyzed list, not guaranteed frequencies in a current or future NYT answer. Its letter-frequency discussion is most useful as a way to compare candidates, alongside the pattern on your board.

When to use an information-first guess

In standard mode, you can make a guess that does not use all known green and yellow clues. That can be worthwhile when several answers remain and a fresh set of letters would separate them. For example, if the current pattern fits multiple candidates, a word that tests letters those candidates differ on may reveal which branch to follow. The trade-off is that this probing turn is not itself a direct attempt to solve the answer.

Use a probe only when its feedback can change your next decision. If a candidate already fits the clues and is substantially more likely than the others, guessing it may be better than spending a turn on information you do not need.

Standard mode and hard mode

Standard mode leaves room for deliberate probes that set aside some revealed clues. Hard mode requires subsequent guesses to use revealed green and yellow information, which can restrict those probes and make candidate selection more constrained. The rulebook documents the six-guess game and feedback for the physical adaptation; digital mode details should be checked in the game itself. Hard mode is a different challenge, not inherently a better or worse way to play.

What strategy simulations can—and cannot—show

A published 2022 study, Using Wordle for Learning to Design and Compare Strategies, tested strategies against a historical set of 2,315 answers. In its hard-mode simulation, the baseline averaged 4.078 guesses and failed to solve within six trials 1.77% of the time. The best tested parameterized strategy averaged 3.674 guesses, with a 0.65% failure rate. These are results from that paper’s simulator and historical answer set, not predicted human performance or a guarantee for today’s puzzle list. Read the paper and its assumptions.

The Times also described a 2022 change to WordleBot’s method: rather than relying on its earlier roughly 2,300-word solution list, it assigned probabilities to roughly 4,500 common English words based on prior solutions. That is historical method information, not evidence of WordleBot’s current configuration. The Times’ account helps explain why a ranking should be read in context rather than treated as timeless.
