Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →You improve at NYT Connections by making your reasoning testable before you submit: scan all 16 words, propose several specific four-word relationships, check what each choice leaves behind, and delay any word that has more than one credible home. The aim is not to guess faster. It is to replace a tempting association with an explanation that accounts for exactly four words and still allows the remaining 12 to form three complete groups.
Connections is deliberately built to create false matches. The New York Times Help Center describes a board of 16 words that must be arranged into four groups of four, with categories colored Yellow, Green, Blue and Purple from easiest to trickiest. A word can appear to belong to multiple groups, so a hint-free solve depends on managing ambiguity rather than finding the first pattern you notice.

What “getting better” means in Connections
A good solve is more than spotting a relationship. You need a relationship that is narrow enough to identify four members, strong enough to exclude the other 12, and compatible with the groups still available after those four are removed. That makes Connections a constraint problem: every proposed group changes the possibilities for the rest of the board.
There is no verified human-performance statistic showing that one particular routine produces a specific win-rate or speed increase. The method below is a practical framework for making fewer premature guesses and learning from each board. It can improve the quality of your decisions without promising a guaranteed solve.

Know the board you are solving
- There are 16 visible words.
- The completed solution has four groups, each containing four words.
- Each group has a color-coded difficulty: Yellow is intended to be easiest, followed by Green, Blue and Purple.
- Words may look as if they fit more than one category. That overlap is an intentional part of the design, not evidence that the puzzle is broken.
Because a category is not complete until it has four defensible members, “these are all related to music” is usually too broad. A testable explanation sounds more like “four words that can precede the same noun” or “four names of a particular type of object.” The exact link matters less than its precision and its ability to reject near-misses.
A hint-free solving routine
Use the same sequence every day. A repeatable order prevents an exciting association from controlling the entire solve.
- Scan the entire board. Read all 16 words before selecting anything. Note obvious meanings, alternate definitions, familiar phrases, abbreviations, proper names, parts of speech and possible wordplay. Do not lock a word into the first category it suggests.
- Generate candidate groups. When four words seem connected, write or say the link in a short phrase. The phrase should explain what all four have in common, not merely name a broad subject. If you cannot state the link clearly, treat the set as a lead rather than a submission.
- Test the leftovers. Mentally remove the proposed four and inspect the remaining 12. Can they plausibly divide into three groups of four? If the remainder contains two stranded words and a vague pile of eight, your first group may be wrong even if its members share a real association.
- Look for overlap deliberately. For each proposed member, ask what other category it could join. Then ask whether another word is a better, more specific fit. A group is stronger when each of its four members belongs there more naturally than any competing candidate.
- Solve the clearest group first. Prefer a set with a precise, distinctive relationship and little competition from the rest of the board. This is a practical heuristic, not an official rule or a measured guarantee. Keep ambiguous words available for later.
- Submit only after a final contradiction check. Name the category, identify the four words, and explain why the other likely candidate does not belong. If you are relying on “close enough,” wait and scan again.
- Reset after a miss. A wrong submission is information about your assumptions. Re-read the unsolved words without defending the rejected category, then record which word or relationship created the trap.
- Review the completed puzzle. Classify the mistake: loose category, overlooked secondary meaning, premature commitment or missed wordplay. Keep one sentence about the lesson for your next board.
How to make a category precise enough to trust
Replace broad topics with an exact operation
Broad labels create false confidence because many words can be associated with a large topic. Convert the topic into an operation that could be checked word by word:

- “Sports” becomes “names of positions in one sport” or “verbs used for a specific action.”
- “Music” becomes “words that can precede a genre, instrument or performance term.”
- “Nature” becomes “types of a named landform, animal or weather event.”
You do not need to know the final wording immediately. You do need a hypothesis that could be falsified. If the explanation remains a general theme after several attempts to narrow it, do not submit it.
Use a four-member proof
For every candidate group, complete this internal sentence: “These four are all ___.” Fill the blank with a specific category, phrase pattern or word transformation. Then test each member independently. If one word requires a special excuse—an obscure sense, a different grammatical form or a loose cultural association—mark it as weak and search for a replacement.
A strong group has four clean explanations, not three clean explanations plus one word that merely feels nearby. It also leaves a coherent board. The two tests work together: local fit checks the proposed group, while the remainder checks the whole puzzle.
Rank your candidates by certainty
Use a simple mental ranking:
- Strong: all four words share one specific link and alternatives are poor.
- Medium: the link is plausible, but one or two words have credible competing homes.
- Weak: the connection is broad, metaphorical or dependent on a forced interpretation.
Submit strong candidates first. Keep medium candidates visible but provisional. Reject weak candidates unless new information turns them into a precise group.

Managing words with more than one possible home
Ambiguous words are often the board’s hinge points. Solving them first feels productive, but it can cause an early theory to absorb words that belong elsewhere. The safer approach is to hold them back while you test clearer relationships.
Create a “reserved” set
After the first scan, identify words with at least two plausible meanings or category roles. Do not delete them from consideration; simply reserve them. Work on words whose relationship is distinctive, then return to the reserved set when fewer possibilities remain.
For each reserved word, ask four questions:
- Does it have a common secondary definition?
- Can it complete a familiar phrase with another word on the board?
- Is it being used as a different part of speech or in a different word form?
- Which candidate group would become more precise if this word were removed?
This prevents a familiar meaning from taking priority merely because you noticed it first. It also turns the remaining board into evidence: once a clear group is removed, an ambiguous word may have only one coherent destination.
Check the counterfactual
For any tempting group, imagine moving one member to its strongest alternative. Does the original category still have four members? Does the alternative become a cleaner group? This counterfactual test is especially useful when one word could fit both a literal category and a phrase-based category.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Choosing what to submit first
The easiest-looking group is not automatically the best first submission. Choose the group that maximizes certainty and preserves options.
| Decision factor | Prefer | Be cautious when |
|---|---|---|
| Specificity | One short explanation accounts for all four words. | The label is a broad topic such as “things related to travel.” |
| Exclusivity | Other board words do not fit naturally. | Several unused words appear equally suitable. |
| Remainder | The 12 remaining words suggest three complete groups. | The removal leaves isolated words or an oversized vague cluster. |
| Interpretation | Every member uses a common meaning or familiar phrase. | One member needs an obscure, technical or improvised reading. |
| Guess risk | You can explain why the likely alternative is weaker. | You are submitting to “see what happens.” |
This framework deliberately favors certainty over speed. Connections gives you limited incorrect guesses, so an untested submission spends a resource without adding much knowledge. If you cannot explain the group and the leftovers, continue searching.
When to broaden your interpretation
If every literal grouping produces contradictions, broaden the way you read the words—but do so systematically. Harder groups can involve wordplay, and a word may function through a familiar expression rather than its most obvious dictionary meaning. Wordplay is a possibility, not a fixed formula that appears in every difficult group.

Look beyond the first definition
Try common alternate senses, noun-versus-verb uses, singular and plural forms, abbreviations and proper-name references. Ask whether the word is being used for what it names, what it does or what it sounds like. Prefer interpretations a general reader could recognize; do not rescue a weak theory with an extremely obscure fact.

Test phrase patterns
Read each candidate beside the others rather than in isolation. A set may share a word that comes before or after each member, form familiar compounds, or complete well-known expressions. State the shared pattern explicitly. If you cannot articulate the pattern, leave the group provisional.
Consider sound and form cautiously
Homophones, spelling changes and other wordplay may matter, particularly in a difficult group. Check whether the transformation is consistent across all four words. A one-off pun is not enough; the same kind of operation should explain the entire set.
What to do after an incorrect guess
A failed submission should change your model of the board. Do not simply reshuffle the same four words and submit again.
- Detach from the rejected label. Write down the four words you tried, then stop defending the category.
- Identify the weakest member. Usually one word required the most explanation. Remove it from the theory first.
- Re-scan the remaining words. Look for a relationship that the failed category concealed, including a secondary meaning or phrase.
- Rebuild from the clearest pair or trio. A pair is a clue, not a group. Search for the fourth member and a precise label before submitting.
- Record the lesson. Note whether the trap came from a broad topic, a double meaning, premature commitment or wordplay. This turns an error into a reusable warning.
The reset is intentionally short. You want a fresh reading, not a lengthy post-mortem that keeps the same assumption alive.
A practical daily practice plan
You can train the reasoning process without opening hint or answer pages.
Before solving
- Use paper or a notes app to record candidate links without searching for confirmation.
- Commit to scanning all 16 words before selecting any group.
- Mark words that have multiple likely meanings as reserved.
During solving
- Write a specific label for every candidate group.
- Rank candidates as strong, medium or weak.
- Check the 12-word remainder before each submission.
- Keep ambiguous words out of the first group unless the evidence becomes decisive.
After solving
- For each error, identify the exact assumption that failed.
- Compare the official category with your original wording. Was yours too broad?
- Note any secondary meaning or wordplay you missed.
- Carry one concrete adjustment into the next puzzle rather than trying to memorize a list of tricks.
This practice is compatible with scratch paper, a dictionary or a thesaurus, but none is established as necessary for the digital game. Generic puzzle books and stationery are optional offline exercises, not proven performance tools.

Common failure modes and their fixes
Submitting a broad theme
Symptom: Four words all relate to a subject, but several other words do too.
Fix: Replace the subject with a precise phrase, category subtype or shared word pattern. If you cannot narrow it, keep looking.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesForcing the fourth word
Symptom: Three members are clear and the fourth is justified with an unusual interpretation.
Fix: Treat the fourth word as evidence against the group. Search the board for a cleaner fourth member and test what happens to the leftover words.
Solving the most interesting clue first
Symptom: A clever pun or unusual association becomes the foundation for the board.
Fix: Label it as medium or weak until it survives the remainder test. Start with the group whose explanation is most exclusive.

Fix: Re-read each crowded word as another part of speech, in a phrase or under a secondary definition.
Repeating the same theory after a miss
Symptom: You make another guess with only one word changed.
Fix: Perform the short reset: discard the label, isolate the weakest member and rebuild from a clear pair or trio.
How to judge your progress without a guaranteed win rate
Because no verified study establishes a particular improvement percentage for human Connections players, track process measures instead of promising results. After each puzzle, ask:
- Did you scan all 16 words before committing?
- Did every submitted group have a specific explanation?
- Did you test the remaining board?
- Did you hold back at least one genuinely ambiguous word?
- After a miss, did you change the underlying assumption rather than make a cosmetic edit?
These questions measure whether your reasoning is becoming disciplined. A difficult puzzle can still defeat a careful solver, and an easy puzzle can be solved through a lucky association. Judge the quality of the process across many boards, not one day’s outcome.
The core decision rule
Before submitting any four words, require three things: a precise relationship, four members that fit without special pleading, and a plausible division of the remaining 12 words into three groups. When one of those conditions is missing, keep scanning. The game’s deliberate overlap means that patience and explicit explanations are more reliable than the first attractive pattern.
