Nintendo’s published tips cover seven of the game’s eight sports. They offer practical timing and control guidance for Tennis, Volleyball, Soccer, Chambara, Badminton, Bowling and Golf; Nintendo’s cited tip pages do not give a specific Basketball technique.
Start with timing and control, not bigger swings
Several sports reward meeting the ball or shuttlecock at a particular point in its movement. Watch its arc and prepare your motion so contact happens at the right moment. In Soccer and Golf, reading the court or course matters just as much as the swing. Use the on-screen prompts when they apply: controls and actions can vary by sport or mode.

Nintendo’s June 3, 2022 tips article and its later Play Nintendo tips provide the sport-specific guidance below. These are recommendations, not guarantees of wins.
Use the right timing cue in Tennis, Volleyball and Badminton
| Sport | Timing cue | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Tennis | The ball reaches the top of its arc on a serve. | Start your swing slightly early so your character’s racket meets the ball at its highest point. Nintendo says this can produce a faster serve; practice the timing. |
| Volleyball | Your teammate sets the ball. | For a quicker spike, jump slightly before the set so you and the ball meet in the air together. A “Quick!” indicator may confirm the timing. |
| Badminton | The shuttlecock begins descending from its highest point. | Use a gentle downward swing for a fast smash. To play a Drop Shot, hold ZR or ZL and swing gently. Mixing drops with smashes can make your attacks less predictable. |
Volleyball: optional update-era moves
Nintendo’s version 1.2.0 update notes describe two additional actions: after bumping the ball, move the stick left and right for a Slide Attack; for a Rocket Serve, toss the ball high and hit it at its apex. These are distinct from the quick-spike timing cue.

Read the play and move with purpose in Soccer
- Anticipate: Check the minimap and move toward where the ball is going, rather than chasing only its current position.
- Pass in four-on-four: Hold ZR while kicking to pass.
- Cover the goal: If nobody else is defending, fall back and protect it rather than leaving it open.
The Leg Strap is used for some Soccer play, but it is not required for every Soccer mode. For Leg-Strap Mode setup, follow Nintendo Support’s instructions.
Chambara: choose a weapon and swing deliberately
The three weapons have different functions. The Sword has the strongest standard strike; the Charge Sword can unleash a powerful Charge Strike after guarding; Twin Swords have a Spinning Strike. Pick based on the attack you want to use, rather than treating them as interchangeable.
Rank #2
- Swing, kick, spike, and bowl your way to victory in 7 sports
- Play Golf, Soccer, Volleyball, Bowling, Tennis, Badminton and Chambara (swordplay)
- Motion controls will get you moving and help turn your real-world actions into in-game movements
- Use the Leg Strap accessory to kick the ball in Soccer
- Play with friends and family locally or online—in some sports, you and a friend can even team up on the same system to take on other teams online
Nintendo’s developer guidance warns, “Random swings in Chambara (swordplay) will actually make your attack weaker!” Make one deliberate swing at a time. With the Charge Sword, guard just before an incoming attack to try for a Timely Block; mashing the guard button will not trigger it.
Bowling: adjust your line and release
- Use the on-screen prompts to move or rotate your character before delivering the ball.
- As you release, try a gentle wrist turn toward your body to add spin.
- Use the result to guide your next alignment rather than assuming one aiming position works for every lane or situation.
Nintendo’s scoring explanation says a strike clears all pins on the first roll and scores ten plus bonuses from the next two rolls. A spare clears all ten pins across two rolls and receives a bonus based on the next roll. The game tracks the score for you.
Rank #3
- The ultimate game that brings together 30 different sports
- Challenge your family or friends and may the best player win
- Multiple game modes available: Quick match or Tournament / Team mode or Solo
- Explore a multitude of environments! Volcano / Desert / Snowy countries
- Unlock new costumes and choose to play with motion or buttons on NSW
Golf: account for wind and shot height
Check the wind meter before choosing your shot. Higher shots are more affected by wind, and Nintendo notes that wedges and irons tend to hit high. Consider both the wind and the club’s trajectory when adjusting your aim.
Shot Assist, added with Golf in version 1.3.0, can help beginners in Play Locally and Play with Friends. It switches back to Normal in Play Globally. Nintendo’s update notes date version 1.3.0 to November 28, 2022.
Rank #4
- 6 sports: Baseball, run's jump, goalkeeper, tennis, bowling & rafting.
- 20 characters to customize (change your name, outfit, accessories & hair)
- Varied game modes - Solo or multiplayer for up to 8 players.

Basketball: what the official tips do—and do not—cover
Basketball is part of the current eight-sport roster, and Nintendo added it in version 1.5.0 on July 9, 2024. However, the Nintendo tip pages cited here do not provide a Basketball-specific technique. It would be misleading to present a particular shooting or dribbling formula as Nintendo-verified advice. Follow the in-game prompts for the mode you are playing.
Nintendo’s current product page lists Tennis, Volleyball, Badminton, Bowling, Soccer, Chambara, Golf and Basketball. The version 1.5.0 update notes specify that Basketball was added to all modes.
Check your controller and game setup
Nintendo Switch Sports uses Joy-Con for motion controls. Nintendo says Pro Controllers are not compatible, the game does not support Handheld Mode, and Joy-Con 2 cannot be used with the Soccer Leg Strap. The physical game edition includes a Leg Strap. Check Nintendo’s Leg-Strap Mode instructions for setup details.
