To get more useful answers from AI search, state what you want, give the context that matters, and specify what a good answer should include. If the first response misses the mark, diagnose the gap and ask a focused follow-up. Clearer prompts can steer a response toward your needs, but they cannot guarantee that its claims are accurate or complete.
What makes an AI-search prompt more useful?
OpenAI recommends giving ChatGPT a clear task, relevant context, and the tone or style you want. Microsoft’s Copilot guidance groups prompt ingredients as goal, context, source, and expectations. These are practical starting points, not a universal formula tested across every AI-search service.

State the task and scope
Replace a broad request with the question you actually need answered. Name the subject and, where relevant, the geography, time period, audience, or limits. “What are good electric cars?” leaves key choices open; specifying a country, budget, and driving needs gives the system a clearer target.

If evidence matters, name the source material or source types you want considered, such as recent manufacturer specifications and independent safety information. Ask for a useful format—perhaps a comparison table—and identify the criteria to compare. These directions tell the system what to prioritize; they do not prove that its answer or citations are correct.
#1 Best Overall
Microsoft’s framework is a useful way to check whether a request covers the goal, context, source, and expectations. Applying it to an AI-search question is a practical synthesis, not a measured rule that works identically on every platform.
A reusable prompt structure
Adapt this scaffold to your question rather than treating it as a magic phrase:
I’m trying to [goal]. Focus on [topic, scope, or geography] and use [source or source type], prioritizing information current to [date or period] if relevant. Give me [format and level of detail]. Include links or citations for key claims. If the evidence is incomplete or conflicting, say what remains uncertain.

The structure reflects official recommendations to state a goal, supply context and source direction, and set expectations. It has not been established as a validated template or as a guarantee of better results for every AI search product.
Example: make a comparison request specific
Broad: “What are good electric cars?”
More focused: “Compare current compact electric cars available in [country] for a household with a [budget] budget. Use recent manufacturer specifications and independent safety information. Compare range, charging, price, and warranty in a table, link the sources, and flag missing or conflicting details.”
That request specifies the market, buyer, evidence, comparison criteria, and output. The bracketed details need to be filled in for your situation.

How to improve a disappointing first answer
Do not automatically rewrite the whole prompt. First identify what went wrong: Was the response too broad, aimed at the wrong audience, missing a constraint, based on unsuitable material, in the wrong format, or silent on one of your questions? Then ask one targeted follow-up that fixes that gap.
- Add missing context: “Limit this to cars available in [country] and a budget of [amount].”
- Narrow the scope: “Compare only the two options that best fit mostly city driving.”
- Request the missing piece: “Add warranty terms and link the source for each figure.”
- Clarify how to present the answer: “Put the comparison in a table and distinguish manufacturer claims from independent information.”
OpenAI recommends adjusting wording, adding context, simplifying requests, and refining iteratively. Its prompt-engineering guidance says, “Prompt engineering often requires an iterative approach.” Microsoft likewise recommends revising a prompt and trying again.
One Copilot-specific adjustment
Microsoft’s Copilot response guidance says instruction order can affect the response and recommends experimenting with that order; it also suggests placing information about files or sources last. Treat this as Copilot-specific advice, not a rule for every AI-search service.

Ask for evidence, then check it
For questions where factual support matters, request links or citations for key claims and inspect the underlying sources. Check whether a source is relevant to the claim, when it was published or updated, and whether its geography, methods, or scope match your question. If sources disagree or leave gaps, ask the system to separate what the evidence establishes from what remains uncertain.
A request for citations does not guarantee correctness. OpenAI’s developer guidance discusses supplying relevant context, including retrieved context, to a model; it is technical guidance about model prompting and implementation, not a consumer guarantee that an AI-search feature will retrieve or verify information reliably. No quantified reliability improvement from these checking steps is established in the guidance cited here.

Provider advice overlaps on clear goals and useful context, but it is not identical. OpenAI’s general guidance emphasizes a clear task, context, tone or style, appropriately sized requests, and iteration. Microsoft’s Copilot materials explicitly organize prompts around goal, context, source, and expectations and offer product-specific advice about instruction order.
Best Value
Associated Press reporter Kelvin Chan’s July 3, 2025, coverage described advice from OpenAI and Google and noted that output depends on what a user asks. It is useful as dated reporting, rather than a current guide to any product’s interface. The available guidance does not establish a head-to-head comparison of current ChatGPT Search, Google AI Overviews or AI Mode, Copilot, Perplexity, and other answer engines. Do not assume that one wording pattern works best everywhere.
As OpenAI’s general advice puts it, “Clear, detailed prompts help ChatGPT understand your goals faster and produce more relevant and accurate responses.” This describes the purpose of clear prompting, not a promise that a response will be true. Microsoft similarly encourages plain, clear language and context: “Think about prompting like having a conversation, using plain but clear language and providing context like you would with an assistant.”
Limits of prompt clarity
Prompt wording can make your goal and constraints easier for a system to interpret; it cannot by itself establish that an answer is factual, complete, or current. The sources cited here provide no numeric estimate of how much clearer prompts improve answer quality, nor do they show that the same technique produces consistent results across services. Treat the response as a starting point when the decision matters, and verify important claims against suitable sources.
