AI image generation

How to Get Auto-Generated Featured Images for Your WordPress Posts

You can automatically add featured images to WordPress posts with a plugin that creates an image when a post is saved, or generate an image from an AI prompt when an editor requests one. The first option can work locally from a reusable design template without an AI API key; the second depends on an external provider and its current terms. Before choosing, check which post types the automatic workflow covers, whether it stores and assigns the image as expected, and whether your theme displays featured images where you need them.

What “auto-generated featured image” can mean

There are two different workflows behind this phrase. In save-triggered generation, a plugin notices that a post has no featured image and renders one from a template—often using the post title—when the post is saved. In AI image generation, an editor supplies a prompt and asks a service to create an image; the editor then inserts it or sets it as the featured image. The second process is usually on demand, not automatic on every save.

These workflows solve different problems. Templates are suited to consistent branded graphics such as a title card or category banner. Prompt-based generation is suited to creating a more varied illustration, but it may require credentials and incur provider charges. A plugin may offer both, so inspect its current documentation rather than assuming “AI” means every mode needs an AI service.

Check theme display before configuring a generator

A featured image is attached to a post, but the active theme controls whether and where readers see it. WordPress’s Theme Handbook describes featured images used in places such as archives, headers, and above post content; the exact presentation depends on the theme and its templates. An image being assigned does not guarantee it appears in every desired location. See the WordPress Theme Handbook guidance on featured images and post thumbnails.

After configuring a generator, preview a post page and an archive page using the active theme. If your site shares posts to social networks, inspect that output separately: social preview behavior also depends on your sharing or metadata setup, not just on creating a WordPress featured image.

Option 1: Generate a template-based image when a post is saved

The WordPress.org listing for Image Generator – AI Featured Image, Thumbnail and Automatic Image Creator for WordPress describes a mode that checks for a missing featured image when a post or page is saved, then renders one from a saved template using the post title. The listing says this template mode runs on the site server with PHP GD and does not need an AI API key. Those are vendor-described capabilities; confirm that the current plugin version supports your installation and intended workflow.

  1. Check the current plugin documentation and compatibility. Confirm the save-time trigger, supported post types, requirements, and whether it avoids replacing an image that is already assigned.
  2. Install and configure the plugin. Create or select a visual template, set its dimensions and style, and decide whether the post title should appear on the graphic. Keep long-title behavior in mind: a title card may need wrapping, truncation, or a template with enough room.
  3. Test on a draft without a featured image. Save the draft, then check both the post editor and Media Library. Verify that an image was created and assigned, rather than merely generated for download or left unattached.
  4. Test other editorial cases. Save a post that already has a featured image and confirm it is not overwritten unless that is explicitly what you want. Test a page and any custom post type separately; coverage in one type does not prove coverage in another.
  5. Preview where the image will appear. Check the single-post page, archives, and any relevant sharing preview before relying on the workflow for published content.

The listing describes automatic save-time generation for posts and pages, while its on-demand mode supports other post types that support featured images. Because plugin behavior and supported types can change, verify the current version against your own post type rather than treating that distinction as permanent.

Option 2: Generate an image from an AI prompt

The same Image Generator listing describes a block-editor workflow in which an editor enters a prompt, generates an image, and inserts it or assigns it as the featured image. It says this mode requires an OpenAI API key. That is distinct from the locally rendered template workflow: the provider handles generation, and provider charges may apply.

Before using a provider-backed mode on a production site, check the plugin’s current privacy information and the provider’s official terms, model availability, and pricing. Do not rely on an old plugin-directory price or model name as a current quote. Also decide who may use the connected credentials and whether the prompts or post content sent to the service are suitable to share with that provider.

Another listing, AI Featured Image, is a separate plugin option. Its directory description can help you assess its stated workflow, but listings are product documentation, not independent comparative testing. Check current setup, supported post types, image assignment behavior, credentials, and costs before adopting it.

Option 3: Build or commission a custom integration

If a plugin’s trigger, provider, editorial review, or post-type support does not fit your workflow, a developer can build a tailored integration. The WordPress Developer Blog’s May 2026 article, “How to build an image generation plugin with the WordPress AI Client”, describes an example plugin and configuring a service connector through the administration area’s Settings > Connectors.

This is a developer-oriented route, not a one-click feature for a typical site owner. The design should specify when generation runs, how it handles failures and existing images, which post types are eligible, how the generated file is stored and assigned, and what review or replacement controls editors need. The WordPress article is a starting point for implementation, not evidence that a particular provider, cost, or custom workflow will suit every site.

Compare approaches against your publishing workflow

Decision What to verify
Trigger Does generation happen on save or publish, in a batch, or only after an editor clicks Generate?
Image source Is the graphic rendered from a local template, generated by an AI provider, selected from a library, or drawn from existing content?
Credentials and cost Does the workflow run locally, require an API key, and incur per-use or subscription charges? Confirm present provider terms rather than assuming a quoted price remains current.
Post-type coverage Does it work for posts, pages, and the particular custom post type or product you publish? Automatic and on-demand modes may have different coverage.
Media handling Does the result appear in the Media Library and become the post’s featured image, or does an editor need to assign it manually?
Theme display Does your active theme show featured images in the post and archive locations you intend to use?
Editorial controls Can editors review, replace, regenerate, or prevent overwriting an existing image? Check the plugin’s current documentation.

No universal winner is established by the available product descriptions. Choose based on the trigger, control, post types, service dependency, and media behavior your workflow requires.

Troubleshooting: when no image appears

  • The post saved but no image was created: Check whether the plugin’s automatic mode is enabled, whether the post type is covered, and whether the post already has an image that causes generation to be skipped. Review the plugin’s current requirements and any reported generation errors.
  • An image was created but is not assigned: Look in the Media Library and editor separately. Some workflows may generate an image for insertion rather than automatically set it as the featured image; confirm the documented behavior and assign it if necessary.
  • The featured image is assigned but not visible on the site: Check the theme’s single-post and archive templates and their featured-image support. Theme behavior determines display; the assignment alone does not guarantee a visible image.
  • AI generation cannot connect: Verify that the API key is configured for the intended mode and account, then check current provider availability and terms. Do not assume a template mode needs the same credentials as AI generation.
  • The title is clipped or awkward on the graphic: Adjust the template’s typography, text area, or title treatment and test with both short and long post titles before enabling the workflow broadly.
  • A custom post type is not covered: Check the plugin’s stated support for that exact type and distinguish automatic generation from on-demand generation. If it is outside the supported scope, use a compatible workflow or commission a custom integration.

Or skip the browser setup: use a screenshot API

If the image you need is a screenshot of a web page rather than a designed or AI-generated illustration, ScreenshotNeo can return a screenshot or PDF from a single GET request. This is a different job from generating an editorial featured image: it captures a URL, which you can then review and upload or assign in WordPress.

For example, this cURL request saves a WebP capture of a page; replace the URL and use your API key. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo removes cookie/consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses report the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server offers screenshot tools for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. These features make it a practical option for capturing clean page images, not a replacement for a title-card template or prompt-based illustration.

Will automatic featured images improve SEO?

Automatically assigning an image can make publishing more consistent, but that alone does not establish a ranking or engagement improvement. The plugin listings include promotional claims, but the sources reviewed do not provide an attributable study or statistic to support a measurable SEO or click-through effect. Choose an image workflow for editorial consistency and appropriate display, not on a promise of guaranteed performance.
