How to Get Around Miami Without a Car: Transit, Beach, and Airport Tips

You can get around Miami without renting a car by combining Miami-Dade Metrorail and Metrobus with the Metromover downtown and the separate trolley services in Miami and Miami Beach. For trips beyond the Miami area, Tri-Rail connects South Florida communities. The best mix depends on where you are going: no single service covers every visitor destination.

Which transit option should you use?

Mode Best for What to know
Metrorail The airport and destinations along the county rail corridor Some airport trips require a transfer at Earlington Heights. Check the Metrorail service information for your origin.
Metrobus Destinations beyond the rail line, including Miami Beach, Key Biscayne, western Miami-Dade, and Florida City Routes fill gaps between rail stations and destinations. Check the current routes and schedules for your trip.
Metromover Getting around central Miami This is a separate fare mode from Metrorail and Metrobus; see the county’s February 2026 fare guide.
Municipal trolleys Local trips within the City of Miami or Miami Beach These are separate services. Miami Beach advertises its own free trolley; the City of Miami trolley does not go to Miami Beach.
Tri-Rail Regional journeys beyond the Miami core Check the route and fare for your travel date. Tri-Rail announced a 10% fare increase effective October 1, 2026.

For any mode, check service span, headways, disruptions, walking connections, and accessibility for the specific stations and vehicles you plan to use. Use the operator’s current trip-planning information rather than relying on an older visitor map for route details.

How do you get from Miami International Airport by rail?

Metrorail serves the airport, but the route depends on where you board. Miami-Dade says travelers heading to the airport from north of Earlington Heights should take a southbound Green Line train to Earlington Heights, then transfer to a northbound Orange Line train for Miami International Airport station. Confirm the route from your actual starting station on the county’s Metrorail page.

Miami Beach’s visitor information puts the airport approximately 10 miles west of Miami Beach; that is a distance, not a travel-time estimate. For a beach-bound trip, check the current bus route and any trolley or water-taxi service details before setting out.

How do you get to and around Miami Beach?

Use Metrobus for county connections to Miami Beach and the beach city’s own local services for trips around the island. Miami Beach advertises a free trolley and lists a free water taxi on its visitor transportation page. Check that page for current days, hours, boarding locations, and service notices.

Do not mistake the City of Miami trolley for a route to the beach: the city explicitly says its trolley does not travel to Miami Beach. Its trolley maps and routes describe the separate City of Miami service.

What do Miami-Dade fares and passes cost?

The county’s February 2026 fare guide lists regular fares of $2.25 for Metrobus and Metrorail and $2.65 for Metromover. Miami-Dade’s posted full-fare passes are $5.65 for one day and $29.25 for seven consecutive days; the one-day pass runs from first use through 2:00 a.m. the next day. Check the county’s fare guide and pass information for current prices and rules.

Compare the pass price with the rides you expect to take and the dates you will travel. These are county-posted figures, not a promise that fares or policies will remain unchanged.

How should you pay and transfer?

Miami-Dade lists EASY Card, EASY Ticket, its GO app, contactless payment, and cash among Metrobus payment options. Transfer eligibility depends on how you pay: the county says bus-to-bus transfers are free within three hours of the initial tap and describes free bus-to-rail and rail-to-bus transfers for eligible payment methods. Cash riders pay the full fare each time. Review the county’s transfer rules and payment options before choosing how to pay.

When is Tri-Rail useful?

Tri-Rail is the regional rail option for trips beyond Miami’s core into South Florida. The South Florida Regional Transportation Authority announced a 10% fare increase effective October 1, 2026; the amount for your journey depends on the applicable route and fare rules. Check the authority’s press releases and current fare information for your travel date. Its announcement describes SoFloGO as bringing together regional transit planning and payment.

Plan around your actual trip

  1. Map the endpoints. Identify your origin and destination, including the last walk from a station or stop.
  2. Choose the service that reaches them. Use rail for the airport and rail corridor, bus for wider county coverage, Metromover for central-city movement, and the relevant municipal trolley for local service.
  3. Check transfers and payment. Confirm whether your fare medium qualifies for a transfer and compare expected rides with the posted pass periods.
  4. Verify the travel date. Check current schedules, disruptions, trolley and water-taxi hours, and regional fares with the operators before leaving.
