Artifacts are progression items used mainly to summon ARK’s bosses. Most are hidden in caves, where you must reach and loot an artifact container; a few maps put them in remote places such as deep-water sites or Wyvern lairs. After collecting the right artifacts, combine them with the required creature trophies and other tributes at an obelisk or boss terminal, select the boss and difficulty, and start the encounter. You can also display an artifact on an Artifact Pedestal.

What artifacts are and why they matter
Artifacts are collectible progression items scattered across the ARKs. They are not ordinary crafting ingredients and do not function as weapons, armor or permanent character upgrades. Their principal purpose is to prove that you have reached dangerous parts of a map and to satisfy a boss’s tribute requirements.

The ARK Official Community Wiki lists 21 artifacts in total, although an individual map contains only a selection of artifact types and quantities. The list on your map, the boss you want to fight and the difficulty you choose determine which ones you actually need. A cave run that produces an artifact for one boss may have no value for another boss or difficulty.
- Primary use: boss-summoning tributes.
- Normal location: a cave artifact container.
- Map exceptions: remote locations such as deep oceans and Wyvern lairs.
- Secondary use: decoration on an Artifact Pedestal.
Artifacts are therefore best treated as a checklist for progression. Before entering a cave, identify the exact artifact and the exact boss tribute set you are working toward. That prevents a difficult run from ending with an item that cannot be used for your chosen encounter.

How to find the correct artifact location
Start with the map and boss, not a random cave
First decide which boss and difficulty you intend to summon. Tribute requirements are not universal: they vary by boss, map and difficulty. Write down every required artifact and mark duplicates separately if the tribute list calls for more than one copy.
Next identify the map on which you are playing. Artifact names can appear on more than one map, while a map may omit artifacts found elsewhere. A coordinate from another map is not a safe substitute, even when the artifact name is identical.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Use the cave and artifact index
The official cave index links caves with their artifacts and coordinates. Use the map’s artifact or cave page to find both the cave entrance and the artifact’s in-cave coordinates. Entrance coordinates tell you where to begin; artifact coordinates tell you how far into the cave you may need to travel.
Do not assume the artifact is immediately inside the entrance. Cave pages commonly separate the entrance location from the container location because passages, vertical drops and branching routes can put the container a considerable distance away. Mark both points on your map or navigation tool before leaving base.
Recognize map-specific exceptions
Most artifact runs are cave runs, but the general rule has exceptions. Some maps place an artifact in a deep-ocean location or a Wyvern lair rather than a conventional cave. These locations change the preparation question: you may need a water-capable or airborne approach instead of a land mount and ordinary cave equipment.
If the map page identifies an underwater or Wyvern-lair location, follow that page’s access route rather than searching for a conventional cave entrance. The location type is part of the artifact’s requirements.

Preparation before entering an artifact cave
Confirm the objective
- Record the artifact name and map.
- Record the boss, difficulty and required number of copies.
- Check whether you are collecting an artifact for a future tribute or making a return trip for a second copy.
- Note the cave entrance and artifact coordinates separately.
Match equipment to the cave
Prepare for the cave’s environment and creatures rather than using one universal loadout. Consider the route’s temperature, darkness, water sections, narrow passages, vertical drops and hostile creatures. Bring equipment and a tame appropriate to the hazards identified on the map page.
A large tame may provide protection but be unable to pass a tight section. A smaller tame may fit the route but offer less carrying capacity or combat strength. If a cave includes water, a land-only plan can fail even when the entrance is on dry ground. For a Wyvern-lair or deep-ocean artifact, plan the entire approach around that environment instead of treating it as a standard cave.
Carry a recovery plan
Store supplies at a safe point before the final approach when possible, and avoid carrying every irreplaceable item into the cave. Know how you will return if the route becomes blocked, your tame is lost or you die. A recovery plan is especially important in a cave where the artifact container is far from the entrance.
Leave enough inventory space to take the artifact. The run is not complete until the item is secured and you have a practical way to leave the location.
Step-by-step: collecting an artifact
- Choose the target. Select the map, artifact, boss and difficulty that define the run.
- Open the map’s cave page. Locate the entrance coordinate, artifact coordinate and any route notes supplied for that map.
- Prepare for the route. Select protective equipment, supplies and a tame that can handle the cave’s terrain and creatures.
- Reach the entrance. Secure your mount and supplies before entering so a death does not immediately end the attempt.
- Navigate to the container. Follow the cave route, checking branches and vertical sections against the artifact coordinates.
- Loot the container. Take the artifact and verify that it appears in your inventory before moving on.
- Secure the item. Leave the cave or place the artifact in a safe storage location. Do not count an unverified pickup as a completed run.
- Record the result. Mark that copy against your boss tribute checklist and note whether another copy is still required.
If the artifact is in an underwater location or Wyvern lair, the same sequence applies, but the preparation and traversal steps must fit that environment.
Using artifacts to summon a boss
Build the complete tribute set
An artifact by itself usually does not summon a boss. Boss terminals and obelisks require a set of artifacts together with creature trophies or other tribute items. The exact combination changes by boss, map and difficulty, so use the tribute list for the specific encounter you selected.

Check the list immediately before the submission. A set that works for one difficulty may be rejected at another, and a set from one map may not apply to the same boss name elsewhere. Count duplicates individually and verify that each item is the required type.
Submit at an obelisk or boss terminal
- Bring the required artifacts, creature trophies and other tributes to the appropriate obelisk or boss terminal.
- Open the terminal’s boss or tribute interface.
- Select the intended boss and difficulty.
- Place every required item in the tribute slots.
- Review the displayed requirements and confirm that no item is missing.
- Start the encounter only after confirming the destination and difficulty.
Keep the tribute set together until the interface accepts it. If the terminal rejects the submission, remove nothing at random; compare the displayed requirement with your checklist and identify the missing or incorrect item.

Why the same artifact can be needed more than once
Boss requirements can call for multiple copies or can be repeated when you run the encounter again. The artifact itself does not become a permanent unlock that covers every future summon. Treat each accepted tribute as consumed for that encounter and plan additional cave runs when your next boss attempt requires another copy.
Displaying artifacts on an Artifact Pedestal
Artifacts have a decorative use as well as their progression role. Place one on an Artifact Pedestal to display it as a trophy. The pedestal provides distinctive display lighting, making an artifact visible as a base decoration or a record of completed cave runs.
Use a pedestal when you want to exhibit an artifact without submitting it to a boss terminal. Keep tribute copies in storage and display only the copy you can spare, especially when your next encounter needs that artifact. The pedestal does not replace the terminal submission process; a boss still requires the listed tribute items in its interface.

After looting an artifact, leave the area and allow the relevant timer to pass before checking again. If the container remains empty, verify that you are in single-player and that server or world settings have not changed the behavior. A hosted server, unofficial configuration or later game variation may use different timing.
Why your container may still be empty
- The documented timer has not elapsed.
- You are playing on a server with custom harvest or structure settings.
- The artifact was taken by another player or tribe member.
- You are checking the wrong cave branch or a different container.
- The map or game version handles respawn differently from the single-player note.
Use your mode and server rules as the authority for the actual respawn result. The 30-minute figure should be read as a version-specific single-player reference.
How many artifacts can you carry?
Human characters
Version 254.0 changed the carrying rules so that human characters could carry artifacts. This is a version-dependent rule, so a current character on a server with different settings may not behave exactly like an older guide describes.
Otters and duplicate copies
The Otter, introduced in version 267.0, can carry multiple copies of the same artifact. That exception matters when you are collecting duplicates for repeated boss fights. Without the appropriate carrying option, inventory limits or item restrictions may force you to make separate trips or use storage between runs.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesPractical inventory planning
Carry only the copies and supplies needed for the current objective. If you are collecting several duplicates, verify how your character, tame and server rules handle artifact stacking before entering a dangerous cave. A carrying rule does not remove the need for a safe extraction plan; losing the carrier can still lose the run’s progress.
| Rule or behavior | Documented detail | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Human carrying | Version 254.0 changed the rules so humans could carry artifacts. | Depends on game version and server configuration. |
| Otter carrying | Version 267.0 introduced the Otter’s ability to carry multiple copies of the same artifact. | Applies to that creature and remains subject to mode or server differences. |
| Single-player respawn | Version 260.0 documented a 30-minute respawn behavior. | Use as a single-player, version-specific reference rather than a universal timer. |
Troubleshooting common artifact problems
“I cannot find the cave entrance.”
Confirm the map first, then compare the entrance coordinate with the artifact coordinate. The two points are not interchangeable. Check whether the location is actually underwater or inside a Wyvern lair; a conventional land-cave search will fail for those map-specific placements.
Best Value
“The artifact is not in the container.”
Verify that you are at the correct container, that the item has not already been looted and that the relevant respawn period has passed. In single-player, the documented reference is 30 minutes from version 260.0. On a server, ask whether another player collected it or whether custom settings alter the timer.
“The boss terminal rejects my tribute.”
Open the requirement list for the exact boss and difficulty. Compare every artifact, trophy and other item one by one. Common causes are choosing a different difficulty than the one on your checklist, bringing the right artifact from the wrong map context, omitting a duplicate or substituting a similar-looking trophy.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11“I picked up the artifact but lost it on the way out.”
Plan the exit before looting the container. Keep the route clear, avoid unnecessary fights after the pickup and use a safe storage point when the map allows one. If the artifact respawns, repeat the run only after checking the timer and your mode or server settings.
“My tame cannot enter the cave.”
Do not force a large tame through a route that requires a smaller mount or an on-foot section. Re-read the cave route notes, choose equipment for the narrow or vertical sections and carry a recovery plan. Artifact acquisition is complete only when the item reaches a secure inventory or storage location.
Choosing between artifact routes
When more than one route can produce a needed artifact, compare the factors that affect the whole run rather than distance alone:
| Decision factor | Questions to ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Cave danger | How severe are the creatures, environmental hazards and escape constraints? | A shorter route may be riskier if recovery is difficult. |
| Traversal requirements | Does the route require water travel, flight, climbing, tight passages or a particular tame? | Equipment and mount compatibility can determine whether the route is practical. |
| Distance | How far is the entrance from your base and from the obelisk or terminal? | Long travel increases preparation and recovery time. |
| Tribute priority | Is this artifact needed for the next boss difficulty? | Collect urgent tribute items first instead of making unrelated cave runs. |
| Respawn rules | Is the world single-player, official multiplayer or a customized server? | Mode and settings can change when a replacement artifact appears. |
A route is usually the better choice when it matches your available tame and equipment, has a manageable recovery path and produces an artifact required by your next confirmed tribute set.
A repeatable artifact-run checklist
- Objective: artifact name, map, boss and difficulty recorded.
- Coordinates: entrance and container locations marked separately.
- Environment: cave, underwater site or Wyvern lair identified.
- Preparation: equipment, supplies and compatible tame selected.
- Inventory: space reserved for the artifact and recovery supplies packed.
- Collection: container looted and item confirmed in inventory.
- Security: artifact delivered to storage or carried safely out.
- Tribute: all artifacts, creature trophies and other requirements checked for the exact difficulty.
- Submission: items placed at the correct obelisk or boss terminal before starting.
- Replacement: respawn timing checked against your mode, version and server settings.
Key takeaways for new and returning survivors
Start with the boss tribute list, then work backward to the map and cave that supply each artifact. Use the official cave index for exact entrance and container coordinates, and treat underwater and Wyvern-lair placements as separate route types. Prepare for the cave’s specific hazards, secure the artifact before leaving and verify every tribute item at the terminal. Artifacts can be displayed on a pedestal, but their progression value comes from satisfying the boss’s map- and difficulty-specific requirements.
Carrying and respawn details are tied to game versions and play modes: version 254.0 enabled human carrying, version 267.0 added the Otter’s duplicate-carrying exception and version 260.0 documented a 30-minute single-player respawn behavior. Use those notes as context, then defer to the settings of the world or server you actually play.
