How to Get and Install Custom Skins in Minecraft Bedrock (PNG and .mcpack Guide)

On a Bedrock device that supports custom imports, open Dressing Room from the title screen, select Create Character, choose Classic Skin, and use the import or owned-skin control to select a compatible PNG. Pick the classic (Steve-style) or slim (Alex-style) model when prompted, then equip the skin. If you have a creator-made skin pack, open its .mcpack file first so Minecraft imports it; then select it through Dressing Room > Classic Skin > Featured Skins. Windows 10 and mobile are explicitly covered by Minecraft’s support guidance. Console importing is not planned in the cited Character Creator FAQ, so console players should use Marketplace skins or Character Creator items instead.

What you need before installing a Bedrock skin

Minecraft Bedrock treats a character skin as a pixel image wrapped around the player model. A direct custom import is a flat PNG file, not a JPG, screenshot, texture pack, or ordinary picture. The PNG must be authored as a Minecraft skin so the game knows which pixels belong on the head, body, arms, and legs.

There are two different workflows:

  • Direct PNG import: You select one compatible skin image from the Dressing Room. This is the simplest option for a single custom skin.
  • Skin-pack import: You open a .mcpack archive containing a manifest, skin metadata, language text, and one or more PNG files. Minecraft adds the pack to its skin-pack library.

Check the device before troubleshooting the file. Minecraft’s Character Creator FAQ says custom skins can still be imported on many Bedrock Engine-based platforms and explicitly identifies Windows 10 and mobile as supported for importing. The same FAQ says, “We do not have plans for importing custom skins on consoles.” That policy can change, but it means an Xbox or other console should not be expected to show a PNG-upload control simply because the game is Bedrock Edition.

You also need access to the file itself. Keep the original PNG or .mcpack in a location your operating system can open, such as Downloads or a local folder. Cloud links, compressed folders with the wrong extension, and images saved by a graphics app in another format can prevent Minecraft from recognizing the asset.

Decide which result you want before downloading anything. A PNG replaces the complete Classic Skin image, while Character Creator is a separate, item-by-item system. A skin pack is not required for one image; it is useful when a creator has grouped several skins and their display information together. This distinction prevents a common mistake: trying to load a pack through the single-image picker or trying to open a PNG as if it were an add-on.

Install a custom PNG skin in Bedrock

1. Open the Dressing Room

  1. Launch Minecraft Bedrock and stop at the title screen.
  2. Select Dressing Room.
  3. Choose Create Character.
  4. On the next screen, select Classic Skin, not the item-by-item Character Creator option.

Minecraft’s 2023 skin guide describes this route as the starting point for changing a Bedrock character: select Dressing Room, then Create Character, then choose between Character and Classic Skin. Menu placement can vary slightly by release, but those labels identify the correct area.

2. Choose the import or owned-skin control

Inside Classic Skin, look for the control that lets you use an owned or imported skin. Select it and open the device’s file picker. Browse to the compatible PNG and confirm the selection. Bedrock may show a preview before applying it.

If the game asks which model to use, choose the model that matches the file’s design: the classic model has Steve’s blockier arms, while the slim model has Alex’s narrower arms. The model choice affects how the image is wrapped around the arms; it does not change gameplay.

Do not judge the file only by its thumbnail. A correctly formatted skin can look like an abstract collection of colored squares outside Minecraft because it is an unwrapped image. What matters is whether Bedrock accepts it and whether the preview shows the head, torso, limbs, front, and back in the intended places. If the picker cannot see the file at all, verify that it is really a PNG and is stored locally rather than only behind a cloud link.

3. Equip and verify the result

After the preview appears, select the skin and choose Equip or the equivalent confirmation button. Return to the Dressing Room preview to check the front, back, arms, and legs. If the image is distorted, the file is probably not a compatible skin layout or the wrong model was selected. Choose another skin file rather than trying to repair a JPG or screenshot by renaming it.

A successful import places the skin in the Classic Skin area for later selection. If it does not appear, close and reopen Dressing Room after confirming that the file is a PNG and that the import action completed.

Keep the original file after a successful import. It gives you a way to restore the look if you switch models, remove the local copy, or need to import the same design on another supported Bedrock device. An imported skin is cosmetic only: it changes appearance, not abilities, equipment, or game rules.

Install a .mcpack skin pack

A skin pack is a small Minecraft add-on archive rather than a lone image. Microsoft’s Learn tutorial, updated July 31, 2025, instructs users to open the .mcpack so Minecraft imports its files automatically into the skin_packs folder inside the com.mojang directory.

1. Open the pack file

  1. Locate the downloaded .mcpack file.
  2. On a system with Minecraft file associations, double-click the file. Minecraft should launch and display an import notification.
  3. Wait for the import to finish before opening Dressing Room. Opening the menu while the archive is still being processed can make the pack appear to be missing.

The extension matters. A file that ends in .zip may contain the right files but will not necessarily trigger Minecraft’s pack importer until it is saved with the .mcpack extension as directed by the tutorial.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not unpack the archive into an arbitrary game folder as a first step. The supported sequence is to open the .mcpack and let Minecraft perform the import. The automatic process places the files in the skin-pack location under com.mojang; it also gives you an import message that confirms whether the game recognized the archive.

2. Select the imported skin

  1. Open Dressing Room.
  2. Select Classic Skin.
  3. Choose the green Featured Skins button.
  4. Select the newly imported skin and click Equip.

The pack route is useful when an author has supplied several coordinated skins or when the files include metadata that a single PNG cannot provide. You do not need to manually copy files into the com.mojang directory when the normal file-opening association works; the import process handles that location.

3. Allow an unrecognized pack when necessary

If Minecraft opens but does not recognize the pack, Microsoft Learn directs users to Settings > General and to turn off Only Allow Trusted Skins. Return to the file and import it again, wait for the confirmation, and then check Featured Skins. Re-enable the trust restriction later if you prefer its protection and no longer need to load that pack.

That setting is relevant to packs that Minecraft does not classify as trusted; it is not a replacement for a valid archive. If the pack still fails after the setting is changed, inspect the contents and filenames rather than repeatedly clicking the file. A missing manifest, malformed metadata, or absent language file can prevent the pack from registering.

What files are inside a creator skin pack?

If you are packaging your own skins, Microsoft’s tutorial specifies a folder containing these parts:

  • manifest.json, which identifies the pack to Minecraft.
  • One or more skin PNG graphics.
  • skins.json, which describes the skins in the pack.
  • A language file such as texts/en_US.lang, which supplies display text.

After creating the folder and its files, zip the contents and save the archive with the .mcpack extension. The resulting file is what another player opens to start Minecraft’s import process. The tutorial’s required filenames are exact; changing capitalization, omitting the language file, or placing unrelated images in the archive can stop the pack from loading correctly.

  • Play with up to four friends or brave the dungeons alone. Battle new-and-nasty mobs across action-packed, wildly varied levels, in a quest to defeat the evil Arch-Illager!

Use the same names consistently across the pack. The entries in skins.json need to correspond to the PNG graphics they describe, while the language file supplies the text that players see in the selection interface. A pack can therefore fail even when one PNG looks perfect if its metadata points to a missing graphic or if the archive contains an extra folder level that changes the expected paths.

A pack author is responsible for making each PNG compatible with the selected model and for matching the names referenced by skins.json. Minecraft’s public guidance does not establish a universal acceptance test for every third-party pack, so validate the archive in the same Bedrock release your audience uses before distributing it.

Platform support and the right workflow

Where you play Custom PNG import .mcpack route Practical choice
Windows 10 Bedrock Explicitly supported by the Character Creator FAQ Open the pack so Minecraft imports it Use a direct PNG for one skin; use a pack for multiple authored skins
Mobile Bedrock Explicitly supported by the Character Creator FAQ Open the file with Minecraft when the operating system offers that option Keep the asset in local storage and use Classic Skin
Other Bedrock Engine platforms The FAQ says importing remains possible on many platforms, but does not enumerate every device Availability depends on whether the platform can open the pack Check the current in-game controls for that platform
Consoles, including Xbox The FAQ says there are no plans for console custom-skin importing Do not assume a downloaded pack will install Use Marketplace skins or Character Creator items

This distinction explains why instructions that work on a phone or Windows computer may fail on Xbox. The edition name alone is not enough; the platform’s file-import support controls which menus appear.

On a supported phone, the practical issue is usually file access: save the PNG or pack to local storage, then use the operating system’s “open with” choice if Minecraft is offered. On Windows 10, a double-click normally invokes the associated Minecraft app for a pack. If those associations are absent, use the in-game PNG picker for a single skin and verify that Minecraft is the Bedrock installation rather than another edition.

What to use when custom importing is unavailable

Minecraft Marketplace skins

Minecraft says the Marketplace contains many free skins as well as skins that can be purchased. Downloading one adds it to your wardrobe, so this is the supported route when your platform blocks external PNG files. Marketplace content is delivered through Minecraft’s own account and store interface rather than the operating system’s file picker.

Marketplace is also the simplest option when you want an official collection without handling files. Check the listing for whether the skin is free or paid before downloading; Minecraft’s guide describes both categories and does not promise that every featured item is free.

Character Creator items

Character Creator lets you assemble a look item by item instead of applying one painted skin image. The Character Creator FAQ states that these items are purely visual and do not affect gameplay. This option is useful on consoles and for players who want to change individual clothing, hair, body, or accessory elements rather than replace the complete Classic Skin image.

Character Creator and Classic Skin are separate choices under Create Character. If you are looking for a PNG import, entering Character Creator will not reveal it; return to the Classic Skin option. Conversely, if you want to combine individual cosmetic pieces, stay in Character Creator instead of importing a flat image.

For people publishing packs

The FAQ says creators can apply to become a Minecraft Marketplace Partner. It does not establish acceptance, compensation, or current program terms, so treat that as an application route rather than a promise that a submitted pack will be published.

Cost, ownership, and practical trade-offs

The official PNG guide and Microsoft Learn’s pack tutorial do not state a required purchase price for importing a file. A direct PNG and a creator-made .mcpack are file workflows, not Marketplace listings. Your practical cost is therefore determined by how you obtain the asset, while the official Marketplace separately includes both free and paid skins.

Choose based on control rather than price alone. A PNG gives you one complete appearance and the shortest setup. A pack takes more preparation but can carry several named skins and their metadata. Marketplace and Character Creator content avoid external files and are the dependable choices on consoles, but Marketplace items may be paid and Character Creator focuses on modular pieces rather than one imported painting.

Diagnose a failed import

The import option is missing

First confirm that you are in Classic Skin, not Character Creator. If the option is still absent, check the platform: Windows 10 and mobile are explicitly supported, while the cited FAQ documents no planned console importing. On a console, move to Marketplace or Character Creator instead of repeatedly renaming files.

The file is rejected or does nothing

  • Confirm that a direct import is a skin PNG, not a JPG, screenshot, or general artwork.
  • Make sure the file was completely downloaded and can be opened by an image viewer.
  • Do not rename an ordinary ZIP or image and expect it to become a valid skin. A pack must contain the required manifest, metadata, language file, and PNG assets.
  • Return to Dressing Room after the selection and check whether the skin was added to Classic Skin.

The .mcpack opens but no skin appears

  1. Open the file again and wait for Minecraft’s import confirmation.
  2. Check Settings > General > Only Allow Trusted Skins; turn that setting off as Microsoft Learn instructs when an otherwise valid pack is not recognized.
  3. Use Classic Skin > Featured Skins to look for the imported entry.
  4. If it remains absent, inspect the archive contents. The pack should include manifest.json, skins.json, at least one skin PNG, and a language file such as texts/en_US.lang.

The skin looks wrong after installation

A stretched body or mismatched arms usually indicates a model mismatch or an image that was not authored as a Minecraft skin. Re-import the file, select the other model when prompted, and compare the preview. If both models look incorrect, obtain a properly formatted PNG from the author rather than editing a screenshot.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You are on Xbox or another console

The documented platform policy is the decisive check. Because the FAQ says console custom-skin importing is not planned, a missing upload button is expected behavior rather than a file-permission problem. Select an official Marketplace skin or build a look with Character Creator items.

The pack appears under the wrong name

Check the metadata and language entries rather than the PNG artwork. A skin pack uses skins.json to describe its skins and a language file such as texts/en_US.lang for display text. If those references do not match the files in the archive, re-create the pack with the exact filenames and zip the contents again before changing the extension to .mcpack.

PNG import versus skin pack: which should you choose?

Decision point Direct PNG .mcpack
Best for One compatible custom skin A creator’s collection with metadata and several skins
What you open A flat skin PNG An archive saved with the .mcpack extension
In-game selection Dressing Room > Create Character > Classic Skin and the import/owned control Dressing Room > Classic Skin > green Featured Skins
Preparation Verify the image is a skin PNG and choose the model Import first; the pack must contain manifest, metadata, language, and PNG files
Cost Not stated by Minecraft’s guide Not stated by Microsoft’s tutorial

Use the PNG route when you control a single file and want the fewest moving parts. Use a pack when you are distributing a set and need names or other metadata to travel with the images. Neither workflow bypasses the platform restriction documented for consoles.

Safety and compatibility checks

  • Keep a backup of the original asset before renaming or editing it.
  • Open only files you trust; a skin image should not need an unrelated executable or installer.
  • Preserve the exact .mcpack extension and wait for Minecraft’s import message.
  • When sharing a pack, tell recipients whether it is intended for the classic or slim model.
  • Remember that menus and platform policies can change. If a current Bedrock update uses different wording, look for the same concepts: Dressing Room, Classic Skin, import or owned skins, and Featured Skins.

Keep the file extension visible while troubleshooting. Some operating systems hide extensions, so a download can become something like skin.mcpack.zip without looking wrong in a basic file list. Minecraft will not treat that double extension as the intended pack. Likewise, changing an image’s displayed name does not convert its format; the underlying file still has to be a PNG authored for Minecraft.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The shortest reliable decision

On Windows 10 or mobile, import a compatible PNG through Dressing Room > Create Character > Classic Skin. If the asset is an authored collection, open the .mcpack, wait for the import confirmation, and equip it from Featured Skins. On a console, skip external-file troubleshooting and use Marketplace or Character Creator content because the cited official FAQ does not plan console PNG importing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I import a custom PNG skin on Xbox?

The cited Minecraft Character Creator FAQ says there are no plans for importing custom skins on consoles. Use a Marketplace skin or Character Creator items on Xbox instead.

Where is the Bedrock skin import button?

From the title screen open Dressing Room, choose Create Character, then Classic Skin. The import or owned-skin control is in that Classic Skin area on supported devices.

What is the difference between Steve and Alex skin models?

Steve uses the classic blockier arm model, while Alex uses slimmer arms. Choose the model that matches the skin’s design when Bedrock prompts you.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I install a .mcpack skin pack?

Double-click the .mcpack so Minecraft launches and imports it. Wait for the confirmation, then open Dressing Room, select Classic Skin, choose the green Featured Skins button, select the pack’s skin, and click Equip.

Why does my .mcpack not appear?

Wait for the import notification, then check Settings > General and turn off Only Allow Trusted Skins as Microsoft Learn directs for an unrecognized pack. If it still fails, verify that the archive contains manifest.json, skins.json, at least one PNG, and a language file such as texts/en_US.lang.

Can a JPG or screenshot be used as a Bedrock skin?

No. A direct custom import requires a compatible skin PNG. Renaming a JPG, screenshot, or ordinary image does not create a valid Minecraft skin.

Are Minecraft Marketplace skins free?

Marketplace includes both free skins and skins that can be purchased. Downloading an item adds it to your wardrobe through Minecraft’s own store interface.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do Character Creator items change gameplay?

No. Minecraft’s Character Creator FAQ describes those items as purely visual; they change appearance without affecting gameplay.

The Bottom Line

Use Dressing Room > Create Character > Classic Skin for a compatible PNG on Windows 10 or mobile. Open a .mcpack first and equip its contents from Featured Skins. Consoles do not have planned custom-file importing in the cited FAQ, so use Marketplace or Character Creator content there.
