The key is a credential. Keep it private, use a RedM/rdr3 recipe rather than a FiveM recipe, and rotate it in the Portal if it is exposed.
What a RedM registration key is
A RedM server registration key is the credential that allows an FXServer instance to use the Cfx.re platform server service. It is generated online for the server owner’s Cfx.re account and then supplied to the server configuration. It is not obtained inside the RedM client, and no physical product is needed.

The key and the game configuration are separate concerns. The key authenticates the server registration; the RedM/rdr3 recipe or equivalent launch configuration tells FXServer which game resources and defaults to load. A valid key with a FiveM recipe is still the wrong setup for a RedM server.
What you need before generating the key
- A supported Windows or Linux host for FXServer.
- Terminal access or another way to control the server startup command.
- A Cfx.re account that will own and manage the server.
- Access to the Cfx.re Portal’s server-registration area.
- The RedM server files, with txAdmin available if you want the guided setup.
- A plan for which RedM environment the key identifies, such as a production server or a test server.
Choose a name that will still be recognizable later. For example, use “RedM production” or “RedM staging” instead of an ambiguous label such as “server1.” The name is an administrative label; it does not replace the generated key.
Generate the key in the Cfx.re Portal
- Open the Cfx.re Portal and sign in with the account that should own the server registration.
- Open the Servers or server-registration-key area. The exact navigation label can change as the Portal interface is updated, but the function is the same: create a server registration key.
- Choose Generate or Create key.
- Enter a recognizable name for the RedM server or environment.
- Confirm creation and copy the generated value immediately. Treat the copied value like a password.
The Portal is the source of the credential. Do not search for a key in the RedM client, the game launcher, or a recipe file. If you manage several environments, generate and label separate keys so you can identify the affected server if one must be replaced.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsUse txAdmin for the first-server setup
txAdmin is the simplest route when you are creating a server for the first time because it collects the key and recipe choices in one guided flow. Start FXServer without an exec argument so txAdmin can open its initial setup panel.
1. Start FXServer without an exec argument
Launch FXServer from the host’s terminal or startup control without passing an exec configuration argument. txAdmin should print a setup URL and a PIN in the server console. Open that URL in a browser on a machine that can reach the panel and enter the displayed PIN.
If no setup URL appears, check that you started the FXServer build that includes txAdmin and that the process is not being launched with a preselected configuration that bypasses first-run setup. Do not paste the registration key into a random console prompt; wait for the txAdmin form or configure the intended file manually.
2. Link the server-owner account
When txAdmin asks you to link an account, use the same Cfx.re account that generated, or will own, the registration key. This keeps the panel’s ownership context aligned with the Portal record. If you link a different account, stop and correct the account association before deploying the server.

3. Enter the registration key
In the first-server or recipe-deployment form, provide the local server name and paste the Cfx.re server registration key into the registration-key field. Avoid adding quotation marks, spaces, or explanatory text around the value unless txAdmin’s field explicitly requires them.
4. Select a RedM recipe
Choose a recipe intended for RedM/rdr3, such as citizenfx default-redm. Do not select a FiveM recipe as a substitute. The recipe determines the game-specific resources and configuration that txAdmin deploys; selecting the wrong family can leave you with a server that is configured for a different game even when the key itself is valid.
5. Supply recipe-specific details
txAdmin may ask for a local server name, the Cfx.re registration key, and database details required by the selected recipe. Provide only the values requested by that recipe. If you do not have a database requirement in the chosen recipe, do not invent one; proceed with the fields the panel actually presents.
6. Deploy and inspect the console
Finish the recipe deployment and watch the txAdmin console. Confirm that the generated configuration is the one you intended and that the resources being loaded are RedM/rdr3 resources. A successful form submission is not proof that the correct configuration was launched; the console is where you verify the active recipe and resource set.
Configure a key manually in server.cfg
Manual setup is useful when you already maintain your own launch script or configuration layout. The critical rule is to edit the server.cfg that FXServer actually loads, not merely a file with the same name in another folder.
- Stop the running FXServer process before changing its configuration.
- Identify the configuration file passed by your startup control. If the launch command uses an
execargument, follow that path to the active file. - Open that file in a text editor and add the registration convar on its own line:
sv_licenseKey "YOUR_KEY". - Replace
YOUR_KEYwith the value copied from the Cfx.re Portal. Keep the quotation marks shown in the example and do not include surrounding commentary. - Save the file, then start FXServer with the same launch configuration you inspected in step two.
- Use a RedM/rdr3 recipe or launch configuration and confirm in the console that the intended configuration and resources are loading.
Do not put the convar in a client-side file, a README, a public repository, or a configuration that your startup command never reads. If you maintain separate staging and production files, add the matching key to the file for each environment and label the Portal entries clearly.
txAdmin versus manual configuration
| Setup method | Where the key is generated | Where the key is entered | Game configuration | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| txAdmin first-server setup | Cfx.re Portal | txAdmin’s first-server or recipe-deployment form | Select a RedM/rdr3 recipe, such as citizenfx default-redm |
A new or guided installation |
| Manual FXServer setup | Cfx.re Portal | The loaded server.cfg through sv_licenseKey "YOUR_KEY" |
Use a RedM/rdr3 launch configuration and verify the active file | An existing scripted or customized installation |
Neither method creates the key locally. The Portal always supplies it; txAdmin and server.cfg are simply two different places where the server receives the credential.

How to verify that the right configuration loaded
Verification prevents a common mistake: editing one configuration while FXServer launches another. Check the startup control for the exact file or recipe it invokes, then compare that with the file you edited or the recipe you selected in txAdmin.
- Confirm the console identifies the expected RedM/rdr3 resources rather than a FiveM resource set.
- Confirm the registration convar appears in the configuration that was actually executed.
- Confirm that the Portal key was copied without truncation or extra characters.
- Confirm that the server-owner Cfx.re account linked in txAdmin matches the account managing the key.
- After changing a key or configuration, fully restart FXServer so the new value is read.
If the console appears to load an old value, stop the process and inspect the launch command again. A second server.cfg, a startup template, or a recipe-generated file may be taking precedence over the file you edited.
Why a RedM server may report an invalid key
An “invalid” message means the server did not accept the credential it received. Work through these checks in order rather than generating random replacement text.
The value was entered in the wrong place
For txAdmin, paste the key into the registration-key field in the first-server or recipe-deployment flow. For a manual server, use sv_licenseKey in the loaded server.cfg. Putting the value in a client setting, an unused file, or a comment will not configure FXServer.
The wrong configuration file was edited
Trace the startup command and identify the exact file passed to FXServer. If the key is present in a different file, move it to the active configuration or change the launch control deliberately. Restart after saving.

The key was copied incorrectly
Copy the generated value again from the Portal and replace the entire value in the field or convar. Check for leading or trailing spaces, missing characters, accidental line breaks, and extra quotation marks. Keep the syntax exactly as sv_licenseKey "YOUR_KEY".
The account or server registration does not match
Ensure txAdmin is linked to the Cfx.re account intended to own the server and that you generated the key while signed in to that account. If you administer multiple servers, verify that you used the key labeled for this environment rather than another server.

A FiveM recipe was selected
A registration key does not convert a FiveM deployment into RedM. Return to the recipe-selection step and choose a RedM/rdr3 recipe, such as citizenfx default-redm, then redeploy or correct the launch configuration.
The key was exposed and replaced
If the value appeared in public chat, a support ticket, a screenshot, a repository, or another place outside the server team, treat it as compromised. Rotate or replace it in the Cfx.re Portal, update txAdmin or server.cfg with the replacement, and restart FXServer.
Keep the registration key secure
The key grants server-registration authority, so handle it as a secret rather than ordinary setup text.
- Paste it only into the private txAdmin setup flow or the server’s protected configuration.
- Do not publish it in chat, issue trackers, screenshots, tutorials, or public code repositories.
- Restrict access to the host and configuration file to the people who administer the server.
- Use descriptive Portal names so you can identify which environment needs rotation.
- Rotate the key in the Portal whenever you believe it has been exposed, then update the server and restart it.
Never include the live value when asking for troubleshooting help. Share the error wording and the relevant configuration structure, but replace the credential itself with a placeholder such as YOUR_KEY.
A complete first-server checklist
- Prepare a supported Windows or Linux host and terminal or startup access.
- Sign in to the Cfx.re Portal with the intended server-owner account.
- Create a clearly named registration key in the Portal and copy it privately.
- Start FXServer without an
execargument if you want txAdmin’s first-run panel. - Open the printed setup URL, enter the PIN, and link the correct Cfx.re account.
- Paste the key into txAdmin’s first-server or recipe-deployment field.
- Select a RedM/rdr3 recipe, such as
citizenfx default-redm. - Deploy, then inspect the console for the intended configuration and resources.
- If configuring manually, put
sv_licenseKey "YOUR_KEY"in theserver.cfgthat FXServer loads. - Keep the credential private and rotate it through the Portal if it is exposed.
Answers to common setup questions
Where do I get a RedM server key?
Create it in the Cfx.re Portal after signing in with the account that will own the server. The RedM client does not generate it.
How do I generate a Cfx.re registration key?
Open the Portal’s Servers or registration-key area, choose Generate or Create key, name the server environment, and copy the resulting value.

Put sv_licenseKey "YOUR_KEY" in the server.cfg that your FXServer startup command actually loads. In txAdmin’s guided setup, enter the same value in the first-server or recipe-deployment field instead.
Why does RedM say the license key is invalid?
Check the active configuration file, copy the Portal value again, confirm the correct Cfx.re account, and make sure you selected a RedM/rdr3 recipe rather than a FiveM recipe. If the key was exposed, replace it in the Portal and update the server.
