How to Get an IRS Identity Protection PIN After Your SSN Is Exposed

Yes—SSN exposure alone is enough to request an IRS Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN). You do not have to wait for a fraudulent tax return. If you have a Social Security number (SSN) or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) and can prove your identity, you can enroll in the IRS program. The fastest method is an IRS Online Account; Form 15227 and an in-person Taxpayer Assistance Center appointment are alternatives when online verification is unavailable or unsuccessful.

An IP PIN is a six-digit number that helps stop someone else from filing a federal income-tax return with your SSN or ITIN. It is not a general freeze on your SSN, and it does not replace reporting identity theft that has already occurred.

What an IRS Identity Protection PIN does

The IRS uses an IP PIN as an extra authentication value on an individual federal tax return. When an IP PIN is required, a return filed with the taxpayer’s SSN or ITIN generally must include the correct number before the IRS will accept it for processing. That makes the PIN a preventive control against tax-related identity theft after an SSN or ITIN has been exposed.

You may request one voluntarily. The IRS does not require proof that a criminal has already filed a return in your name. The basic requirements are an SSN or ITIN and successful identity verification. Start with the IRS’s Get an identity protection PIN instructions.

What the PIN does not do

  • It does not lock, replace or monitor your SSN.
  • It does not protect credit applications, bank accounts, employment records, benefits records or state tax systems.
  • It does not resolve a fraudulent federal return that has already been filed.
  • It is not used on a state income-tax return or a federal tax-extension form.

If your SSN was used fraudulently, follow the IRS identity-theft instructions as well as obtaining an IP PIN.

Who can enroll after an SSN exposure?

Anyone with an SSN or ITIN who can complete the IRS identity-proofing process may proactively join the IP PIN program. A confirmed tax-fraud incident is not a prerequisite. This is useful when a data breach, lost document or scam has exposed your number but you have not received an IRS notice and have no evidence that a return was filed.

Identity verification is the deciding factor. If the IRS Online Account cannot verify you, the IRS provides two other routes: submitting Form 15227 when you meet its conditions, or requesting an appointment at a Taxpayer Assistance Center (TAC).

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Compare the three enrollment routes

Route Identity-verification method Eligibility or documents Access and timing
IRS Online Account Online identity proofing while creating or signing in to an account Valid SSN or ITIN and successful online verification Fastest route; retrieve the PIN online
Form 15227 Telephone verification by the IRS after the form is submitted Valid SSN or ITIN, telephone access, and last-filed-return AGI below $84,000 for an individual or $168,000 for married filing jointly The IRS says the PIN usually arrives by U.S. mail four to six weeks after verification
Taxpayer Assistance Center Face-to-face verification Used when online verification or Form 15227 is unavailable, unsuccessful or ineligible; bring one government-issued photo ID and one additional identity document Requires an appointment and travel; dependent cases need additional documents

The IRS states that the alternatives take longer than online enrollment. The AGI figures and four-to-six-week mailing estimate are current process rules on the IRS enrollment page, not a promise that every application will finish within that period.

Fastest method: enroll through an IRS Online Account

Use this path first unless you already know that online identity proofing will not work for you.

  1. Open the official IRS enrollment page. Go to Get an identity protection PIN and select the link to access or create an IRS Online Account. Avoid following links in unsolicited messages.
  2. Sign in or create the account. Complete the account provider’s identity-verification prompts. Use your own contact information and answer the requested financial or personal-history questions accurately.
  3. Open your profile. After signing in, go to the Profile area and locate the IP PIN section. The IRS identifies this profile option as the place to request enrollment.
  4. Request the IP PIN. Follow the on-screen confirmation steps. Save the number only in a secure password manager or another protected location.
  5. Record the retrieval method. Online enrollees do not receive a CP01A notice by mail. Each year’s number must be retrieved through the IRS Online Account.

If the account system cannot verify your identity, do not repeatedly submit random information. Move to the Form 15227 eligibility check or the TAC route described below.

What to have ready

  • Your SSN or ITIN.
  • Access to the email address and mobile or other contact method used during account setup.
  • Information from your own tax and financial records needed for identity questions.
  • A secure place to store the six-digit PIN after it appears.

Alternative route: Form 15227

Form 15227, Application for an Identity Protection Personal Identification Number, is intended for people who cannot complete online enrollment but meet the IRS’s eligibility conditions. Check the current Form 15227 instructions and the IRS enrollment page before submitting because thresholds and procedures can change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the current Form 15227 conditions

  • You have a valid SSN or ITIN.
  • You have telephone access so the IRS can call to verify your identity.
  • Your adjusted gross income (AGI) on your last filed return was below $84,000 if filing as an individual or below $168,000 if married filing jointly.

These are the limits stated by the IRS for the current process. They are not a general income limit for using an IP PIN once one has been assigned.

Submit and complete the telephone verification

  1. Download or open the current Form 15227 from the IRS identity-protection instructions.
  2. Enter the requested identifying information exactly as it appeared on your last filed federal return.
  3. Submit the form using the online submission option described by the IRS. Keep a copy of what you sent.
  4. Answer the IRS’s verification call. The IRS uses the call to confirm your identity; missing the call or failing verification can prevent issuance.
  5. Wait for delivery by U.S. mail. The IRS says the PIN usually arrives within four to six weeks after identity verification.

Do not treat the four-to-six-week estimate as an electronic delivery promise. If the mail does not arrive, use the IRS IP PIN FAQ and contact instructions rather than filing with a guessed number.

When online enrollment and Form 15227 do not work: a TAC appointment

The IRS says you may request a Taxpayer Assistance Center appointment if you cannot verify your identity online, cannot use Form 15227, or do not meet Form 15227’s conditions. This is also the practical route when the IRS requires in-person document review.

Prepare the identity documents

  • One government-issued photo identification document.
  • One additional identity document, such as another document accepted by the IRS appointment process.
  • For a dependent, the additional documents the IRS specifies for the dependent’s situation.

Use the IRS appointment instructions to confirm which documents are accepted before traveling. A TAC visit is appointment-based; do not assume a walk-in office can complete IP PIN enrollment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Request the appointment

  1. Read the current TAC instructions on the IRS IP PIN enrollment page.
  2. Use the IRS appointment process and explain that you need identity verification for the IP PIN program.
  3. Bring the original documents requested for you or the dependent.
  4. Follow the IRS representative’s instructions for receiving or retrieving the assigned PIN.

How to use the PIN when you file

Your IP PIN is a six-digit number valid for one calendar year. The IRS generates a new number each year. Use the number assigned for that calendar year on federal returns filed during that year, including a return for an earlier tax year that you submit during the current calendar year.

Electronic returns

Tax software normally displays an IP PIN field when the return requires one. Enter all six digits exactly as shown in your IRS Online Account or notice. If a trusted paid preparer completes the return, provide the number directly to that preparer through a secure channel and verify the value before authorizing e-file submission.

An omitted or incorrect IP PIN can cause an electronic return to be rejected. Correct the number in the return and retransmit it according to the software or preparer’s instructions; do not invent a replacement number.

Paper returns

Follow the applicable Form 1040 paper-filing instructions for placing the IP PIN on the return. A missing or incorrect number can delay paper processing while the IRS verifies the filing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Returns and forms that are outside the program

The IRS IP PIN FAQ explains that the number is for specified federal tax forms. It is not a PIN for a state return and is not used to obtain a federal filing extension. If a software package asks for an IP PIN on a form that is not covered by the IRS instructions, check the form’s instructions or ask the preparer before submitting.

Annual renewal and retrieving a lost PIN

Enrollment is not a one-time permanent number. The assigned PIN expires after its calendar year, and a fresh six-digit number is issued for the next year.

  • Online enrollees: sign in to the IRS Online Account each year and open the Profile’s IP PIN section. The IRS does not mail these taxpayers a CP01A notice.
  • Mail-based or IRS-assigned enrollees: follow the retrieval or notice instructions provided by the IRS for that year’s number.
  • If you cannot find the number: use the IRS’s current IP PIN frequently asked questions for the official retrieval procedure. Do not guess, reuse last year’s number or send the PIN through an untrusted channel.

Because the number changes annually, add a calendar reminder to retrieve it before preparing your first federal return of the year.

If your SSN has already been used for tax fraud

An IP PIN helps prevent a future unauthorized filing; it is not the complete response to an existing identity-theft incident. Warning signs include an IRS notice about a return you did not file, an unexpected tax-account transcript, or a rejected e-file because a return already exists under your SSN.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Read the IRS notice completely. A notice can contain incident-specific instructions and deadlines. The IRS’s explanation of the CP01E notice is available at Understanding your CP01E notice.
  2. Follow the IRS identity-theft process. Use the instructions in If you were scammed for a stolen SSN or ITIN and tax-related misuse.
  3. Report the broader identity theft. IRS guidance directs victims to IdentityTheft.gov and says they may also report the incident to their state tax agency.
  4. Use Form 14039 when the IRS instructions call for it. The form can apply in relevant identity-theft cases, but a notice may require a different response. Follow the notice rather than assuming Form 14039 is always necessary.
  5. Enroll in the IP PIN program separately. The PIN can reduce the chance of another unauthorized federal filing, but it does not close or resolve the existing fraud case by itself.

Keep copies of notices, forms, confirmation numbers and correspondence. Send sensitive documents only through the IRS channel specified in the notice or official instructions.

Protect the PIN from scams

Anyone who obtains the six digits may be able to use them in a fraudulent tax filing, so treat the number as confidential tax information.

  • Store it in a password manager or another protected record.
  • Give it to a tax preparer only when that preparer is preparing your return.
  • Verify a preparer’s identity independently before sharing it.
  • Do not publish it in email threads, text messages, cloud notes shared with other people or social-media posts.
  • Ignore unsolicited requests by phone, email or text. The Taxpayer Advocate Service’s 2026 guidance quotes the IRS warning: “The IRS will never ask for your IP PIN.”

Use the official IRS pages directly: Get an identity protection PIN and IP PIN frequently asked questions. A caller who pressures you to disclose the number, threatens immediate arrest or demands payment is not following the legitimate IP PIN process.

Common problems and the right next step

Problem What it means Next step
Online account will not verify you The fastest route is unavailable for your identity record Check whether you meet Form 15227’s AGI and telephone requirements; otherwise request a TAC appointment
AGI is at or above the Form 15227 limit You are not eligible for that alternative under the current IRS rule Use the IRS Online Account if possible or request in-person assistance
No telephone access for Form 15227 The required call-back verification cannot be completed Use online enrollment or the TAC route
PIN has not arrived after mailing Postal delivery or verification may be incomplete Check the IRS IP PIN FAQ and contact instructions; never guess a number
E-file rejected for an IP PIN error The number is missing, mistyped or for a different calendar year Retrieve the current PIN, correct the return and retransmit it
Paper return is delayed The IRS must verify a missing or incorrect number Follow any IRS correspondence and provide the requested information
You received a notice for a return you did not file This may be an identity-theft incident, not merely an exposed SSN Follow the notice and the IRS stolen-identity instructions; consider Form 14039 only when applicable

Practical checklist

  1. Confirm that you have an SSN or ITIN and that the exposure is a reason to act now, even without confirmed tax fraud.
  2. Attempt enrollment through the IRS Online Account first.
  3. If online verification fails, check the current Form 15227 conditions: AGI below $84,000 for an individual or $168,000 for married filing jointly, plus telephone access.
  4. Submit Form 15227 and complete the IRS telephone verification if eligible.
  5. If neither route works, schedule a TAC appointment and bring the required identity documents.
  6. Record the six-digit number securely and use the correct year’s number on applicable federal returns.
  7. Retrieve a new number every calendar year; online enrollees must get it from their IRS Online Account.
  8. Keep the PIN private and remember that actual tax fraud still requires the IRS identity-theft process.

What to remember

An exposed SSN does not disqualify you from the IP PIN program—it is a reason to consider enrolling. Use the IRS Online Account for the quickest identity verification, Form 15227 when you meet its current income and telephone conditions, or a Taxpayer Assistance Center when the remote methods fail. The number is six digits, changes every calendar year and belongs on applicable federal returns only. Keep it secret, and report any fraudulent filing through the IRS response process rather than relying on the PIN alone.
