To make a website see a public IP address associated with another country, connect through a VPN server or proxy exit point there. For most people, a VPN is the simplest option: select the country in the VPN app, connect, and check the IP address and country that an online IP lookup reports. This changes the apparent network origin, not your physical location, and it does not guarantee that a particular website will treat the connection as local.
How a VPN gives you an IP address associated with another country
A VPN app routes your internet traffic through an exit server. A website you visit then sees the server’s public IP address instead of your ordinary public IP. Cloudflare describes one example of this approach as selecting “an egress IP address from a pool registered to that geographic area”; that explains the mechanism, but it does not mean every VPN provider uses Cloudflare’s system. - Choose a VPN provider and check its current server-location list for the country you want. Locations, cities, protocols and availability vary by provider and can change.
- Install the provider’s app, sign in, and select a server in that country. Exact labels and menus depend on the app.
- Connect, then use an IP lookup service to check the public IP and country it reports. If it reports the wrong country or your ordinary IP, disconnect and try another server or check the VPN’s connection settings.
The reported country is based on geolocation records associated with the exit IP. It is an estimate, not evidence of where you are physically located or a guarantee that a website will grant access.
Other ways to route traffic through another country

Proxy
A proxy forwards selected traffic through an intermediary, so the destination sees the intermediary’s IP. Proxy behaviour depends on how it is configured and which app uses it; it may not route all device traffic. Take particular care with residential proxies. The FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center defines one as “an intermediary server between individuals and websites they visit to make their connections appear to originate elsewhere” and warns that devices may be included with their owners’ consent or without their knowledge. Do not install proxy software or enable connection sharing unless you understand whether your own device or internet connection could be used by the network. FBI IC3 public service announcement

Smart DNS
Smart DNS can route selected DNS requests for certain services, but it does not itself give your device a different public IP. If the specific goal is for websites to see an IP associated with another country, use a VPN or proxy instead. Smart DNS Proxy FAQ
Remote access
If you need to work from a computer or network physically located abroad, connect to that machine rather than treating remote access as a VPN country selector. Microsoft explains that a Remote Desktop client connected to a VPN acts as part of the same network; traffic originating from the remote computer uses that computer’s network connection. Why an IP lookup may show the wrong country
An IP address is not inherently tied to a physical place. Cloudflare says IP geolocation is an estimate: databases can disagree, and changes in how addresses are allocated can affect results. Its own geolocation database is updated multiple times per week, but it does not guarantee that other providers’ data will agree. Cloudflare network settings documentation
- If an IP lookup shows the wrong country, try a different server in the VPN app and check again.
- If different lookup services disagree, that reflects differences in their geolocation data; no single result proves where you are.
- Do not rely on IP geolocation alone for precise or compliance-critical location decisions. Cloudflare advises using more than one signal for those purposes.
Will a website treat the connection as local?
Not necessarily. A country-associated VPN or proxy IP changes the apparent network origin; it does not guarantee access, eligibility or local treatment. A destination can apply its own access rules or use checks beyond IP geolocation. The sources here do not establish which checks any particular consumer service uses, so check that service’s current terms and help pages rather than assuming an IP change is sufficient.
