How to Get Airline Delay Updates and Rebooking Alerts on Your Phone

To get flight-delay and rebooking alerts, add your reservation to the app of the airline operating each flight, turn on notifications in both the app and your phone settings, and make sure the booking has your current mobile number and email address. If the airline offers text or email alerts separately, subscribe to those too. When an alert arrives, open the airline’s official app or website to review the change and any rebooking choices: receiving a notification does not itself accept a new itinerary or complete a rebooking.

Set up airline alerts before you travel

  1. Identify the operating airline. Check each flight on your itinerary, especially if one airline sold the ticket and another operates the plane. Add the booking to the operating airline’s app where possible; a codeshare or booking made through another carrier may affect which alerts are available.
  2. Open the airline’s official app and add your trip. Sign in if required, then use its trip-management feature. Qatar Airways, for example, directs customers to add a booking under “My Trips” in its app.
  3. Turn on flight notifications in the app. Look for settings for trip, flight-status, or push notifications. The precise labels and whether you must enroll in alerts vary by airline.
  4. Allow notifications in your phone settings. The airline app’s notification setting and the phone’s operating-system permission are separate. Check the phone’s settings for the airline app and allow notifications there as well.
  5. Check the booking’s contact details. Confirm the reservation includes a mobile number and email address you can access. JetBlue advises customers to keep trip details and contact information current.
  6. Enroll in backup channels if offered. Subscribe to text or email alerts where the airline provides them. Before departure, check the airline’s flight-status page or app too. Keep your phone charged; a power bank is optional, not a requirement for receiving an alert.

Which alerts and channels can you expect?

There is no single alert setup shared by all airlines. The available channels and covered events can depend on the carrier, flight, booking, and country. Airline examples illustrate the differences; they are not a speed ranking or a guarantee that every flight is covered.

Airline Alert details described by the airline Important qualification
American Airlines Flight notifications include BeNotified preferences for all flights and notifications for a specific flight. These are distinct notification options; check the airline’s settings for the alerts you want.
JetBlue Its Customer Service Plan lists app, email, text, push, and other notification channels. JetBlue recommends keeping contact details current in trip details.
ANA Its reservation and service information describes app and SMS alerts for several kinds of changes. Some codeshare flights operated by other carriers and some countries are excluded from certain notifications; SMS availability varies by country.
Qatar Airways Its app guidance tells travelers to enable push notifications and add their booking to My Trips. Follow the app’s setup instructions for your booking.
Singapore Airlines Booking alerts may arrive by email or app push when the trip is added to the app; described disruption alerts include cancellations, delays, and flight-time changes. Available alerts depend on the airline’s booking and app setup.

For U.S. flights, the Department of Transportation (DOT) says airlines must send subscribers’ notifications using the method the subscriber selected. Separately, for flights scheduled to depart within seven days, airlines must provide flight-status updates no later than 30 minutes after learning of a status change, with the airline website and telephone reservation system as minimum sources. That status-update rule is not a promise that every push notification will arrive immediately. See the DOT’s Airline Cancellation and Delay Dashboard for the agency’s explanation.

What to do when a delay or cancellation alert arrives

  1. Open the reservation in the airline’s official app or website. Check the current itinerary rather than relying on the notification alone.
  2. Work out what changed. See whether the flight time moved, the flight was canceled, a connection is at risk, or the airline has already assigned another itinerary.
  3. Review the available choices and any response deadline. Do not assume the alert accepted or rejected a changed itinerary on your behalf.
  4. Use the trip-management tool to act. Depending on the airline and the disruption, the app may let you select an available flight or access a new boarding pass. American says customers can review trip changes and choose another available flight in its app; its delayed or canceled flight support page also recommends enabling push notifications for status updates and boarding reminders.
  5. Try another official channel if the app does not show what you need. Check the airline’s website, contact its customer service, or ask airport staff. Keep the alert and original itinerary if the disruption may affect a refund or other claim.

U.S. flights: distinguish rebooking from a refund

For travel covered by U.S. DOT rules, a passenger may be entitled to a refund if the airline cancels or significantly changes a flight and the passenger chooses not to travel or accept a rebooking, travel credit, voucher, or other offered compensation. Choosing and taking an alternative itinerary leads to a different refund outcome. Airlines must tell affected passengers about refund rights; offers and response deadlines can matter, so check the airline’s message and the DOT’s current refund guidance.

Refund rights are separate from carrier service commitments during controllable disruptions. The DOT’s dashboard summarizes commitments by airline; check the specific carrier rather than assuming every airline must provide the same meals, hotels, or rebooking options. This U.S.-specific guidance should not be treated as a statement of passenger rights in other countries.
