Accurate-enough heart-rate readings from earbuds start with the sensor, not the workout app. Your earbuds must contain a dedicated heart-rate sensor; changing the fit of ordinary earbuds cannot add this capability. For sensor-equipped models, seat the sensor against your ear, try tip sizes for contact as well as sound isolation, keep the sensor clean and dry, enable heart-rate monitoring, and verify that your phone and workout app can use the data.
These steps improve the chance of a continuous reading but cannot guarantee medical-grade accuracy for every person or activity. Cold ears, moisture, earwax, skin conditions, nearby metal piercings and exercise motion can all interfere. If the number remains erratic, use it as a fitness estimate and compare it with a separate monitor such as a chest strap rather than treating an earbud reading as a diagnosis.

First check whether your earbuds can measure heart rate
Heart-rate troubleshooting applies only to earbuds with an optical, electrical or other dedicated heart-rate sensor. Many workout earbuds measure sound, movement or touch controls but have no hardware that can detect a pulse. No ear-tip change, firmware setting or phone app can turn those models into heart-rate monitors.

Powerbeats Pro 2 is a documented current example. Apple’s instructions cover its built-in heart-rate sensor, while the model’s available features and operating-system requirements can vary by region. Read the specifications and support page for your exact model before trying to diagnose a missing reading: Apple’s Powerbeats Pro 2 heart-rate guidance.

Signs that the hardware is the limiting factor
- Your earbuds’ specifications and companion app contain no heart-rate or pulse-monitoring feature.
- The workout app lists only phone or watch sensors as possible sources.
- The earbuds play audio and track controls normally but never appear as a heart-rate source after pairing.
In any of these cases, use a watch or a separate heart-rate monitor. Do not infer that a model measures pulse merely because it is marketed for running or has an accelerometer.
Complete the software setup before changing the fit
A sensor can be working while an app is unable to read it. Set up the connection and permissions first, then test the earbuds while sitting still.
- Pair and connect the earbuds. Confirm that the phone shows them as connected rather than merely saved as a previously paired device.
- Turn on heart-rate monitoring. On iPhone, Apple says to connect Powerbeats Pro 2 and enable Heart Rate Sensor in Beats settings. On Android, use the Beats app and enable Heart Rate. Android monitoring requires both earbuds, and feature availability can differ by region.
- Give the workout app permission. Apple’s supported setup requires a third-party iPhone workout app to support HealthKit and have permission to read heart-rate data and read or record workouts. If either permission is denied, the app may show no value even when the earbud sensor is producing one.
- Start a short stationary test. Open the workout app, remain still for several minutes and check whether a value appears. A stable value at rest helps separate connection or permission problems from motion-related problems.
- Update only through supported software paths. Keep the phone, earbuds and companion app on versions supported by the manufacturer. Apple’s requirements can change, so check the current support page when a menu or permission described above is missing.
On iPhone, Powerbeats Pro 2 can monitor with one earbud, but wearing both may improve the chance of a usable reading. Android monitoring requires both earbuds, so a one-earbud test on Android is expected to fail rather than demonstrate a bad sensor.
Fit the sensor, not just the speaker
The most important physical adjustment is skin contact at the heart-rate sensor. Apple warns that poor contact between the Powerbeats Pro 2 sensor and the skin of the ear can produce a poor recording. An earbud can sound sealed and feel secure while its sensor is sitting slightly away from the skin.
Try each supplied tip deliberately
- Start with the tip that normally gives you a comfortable audio seal.
- With the earbud seated, check that the sensor area remains against the ear rather than floating over a hollow or fold.
- Try the other supplied sizes and retest the stationary reading after each change.
- Choose the size that keeps the sensor in contact without painful pressure or a loose, shifting shell.
Audio isolation and heart-rate contact are separate goals. Apple specifically notes that the tip giving the best acoustic seal may not be the tip that gives the best heart-rate contact. If one size sounds ideal but produces dashes or an intermittent value, test the size that places the sensor more firmly on your ear.

Keep both earbuds stable during workouts
Use both earbuds when possible, especially on Android. During vigorous movement, a small change in angle can break optical contact even when an earhook or wing keeps the earbud from falling out. Seat each side before starting the workout and recheck after sweating begins.
If the app shows dashes or a dimmed heart-rate field, Apple identifies that as a poor reading and recommends checking fit and connection. Treat the display state as a signal to reseat the earbuds, not as a zero heart rate.

Build-up between the sensor and skin can scatter or block the signal. Clean the earbuds regularly according to the manufacturer’s care instructions, and allow them to dry before wearing them again. Do not scrape a sensor with a sharp object or soak the earbuds unless the instructions for your model explicitly allow it.
Before a workout, check for factors that can change contact:
- Earwax on the sensor or in the part of the ear where it rests.
- Sweat, rain or condensation between the sensor and skin.
- Skin irritation, inflammation or another skin condition at the contact point.
- Nearby piercings. Apple specifically notes that metal piercing jewelry may affect Powerbeats Pro 2 performance.
- A tip that has stretched, torn or become slick enough to let the earbud rotate.
Clean and dry both the earbud and the contact area, then repeat the stationary test. If irritation or pain persists, stop wearing the earbuds and address the ear problem rather than tightening the fit.

Account for temperature and exercise motion
Cold can reduce the available signal
Apple says cold weather can reduce blood flow in the ears, making it harder for the Powerbeats Pro 2 sensor to obtain accurate readings. A reading that works indoors but disappears during a cold outdoor run may reflect reduced ear blood flow rather than a pairing failure. Warm up gradually, protect your ears from extreme cold and allow the earbuds to reach a stable temperature before judging the result.
Individual differences in skin blood flow, plus changes caused by the environment and the activity itself, also affect a sensor’s signal. A perfect fit cannot eliminate those biological and environmental variables.
Motion is harder than sitting still
Running combines repeated impact, changing ear pressure, sweat and rapid changes in blood flow. Even a secure earbud can move by a few millimeters relative to the skin. A stationary test therefore confirms only that the setup can produce a signal under easy conditions; it does not prove that every interval or sprint will be recorded continuously.
Use the data path your app actually supports
Heart-rate data may pass from the earbud to the phone, through a health-data framework and then into a workout app. A break at any point can look like an inaccurate sensor.
iPhone source priority in Apple’s documented setup
Apple says that when an Apple Watch and Powerbeats Pro 2 are both available, the source with the highest confidence at that moment is used. Apple also says a paired third-party heart-rate monitor, such as a chest strap, is prioritized over Powerbeats Pro 2 readings. This is a rule for the supported Apple setup, not a universal ranking of every earbud and chest strap.

Check the app’s permissions and compatibility
In the iPhone workout app, confirm that HealthKit access includes permission to read heart rate and to read or record workouts. An app that does not support HealthKit cannot use the Powerbeats data through Apple’s documented route. On Android, verify that the workout app explicitly supports the Beats heart-rate feed; a generic Bluetooth-audio connection alone does not guarantee that the app can consume pulse data.
If two apps show different numbers, first check whether they are reading different sources. A watch, chest strap and earbuds can each supply a value, and the app may switch sources when one becomes unavailable.
What motion evidence can—and cannot—tell you
A 2024 preprint by researchers affiliated with the University of Cambridge and Singapore Management University evaluated hEARt, an in-ear microphone prototype, with 15 subjects. The experiment compared stationary, walking and running conditions. Its mean absolute errors were:
| Activity | Mean absolute error | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Stationary | 1.88 ± 2.89 bpm | Prototype result while participants were still |
| Walking | 6.83 ± 5.05 bpm | Prototype result with moderate motion |
| Running | 13.19 ± 11.37 bpm | Prototype result during higher motion |
The paper reports larger errors during walking and running and says participants who could not achieve a good fit had worse signal quality. It also notes that movement could loosen the wired earbuds used in the prototype. These figures are not a performance rating for retail Powerbeats Pro 2 or any other commercial earbud: the hardware, software, sample and test protocol are different. They are useful for explaining why motion and fit deserve separate tests.

Compare an earbud reading without assuming a winner
If consistency matters, compare the earbud with a separate monitor under the same conditions: same arm position, pace, timing and workout app. Look for repeated patterns over several sessions rather than declaring one reading correct from a single mismatch. The available evidence does not establish a universal accuracy ranking between commercial earbuds, watches and chest straps.
| Decision factor | Earbuds with a heart-rate sensor | Separate monitor, such as a chest strap |
|---|---|---|
| Hardware requirement | Must include a dedicated sensor and maintain ear-skin contact. | Requires its own sensor, transmitter and compatible app or device. |
| Fit during exercise | Depends on tip choice, ear shape, sweat and movement at the ear. | Depends on stable placement at its own measurement site. |
| App compatibility | Requires the earbud companion app and a workout app that can receive its data. | Requires a phone, watch or app that supports the monitor’s connection. |
| Continuity while moving | Can be interrupted by earbud rotation, impact, cold or moisture. | May avoid ear-related problems, but no universal advantage is established for every strap. |
| Apple source handling | Powerbeats Pro 2 is used when it is the highest-confidence available source. | A paired third-party monitor such as a chest strap is prioritized in Apple’s documented setup. |
| Accuracy claim supported here | No controlled independent validation of Powerbeats Pro 2 during exercise was identified. | No universal commercial-device ranking is established. |
A separate monitor is the sensible next step when you have confirmed the sensor, fit, cleanliness, permissions and temperature but still see frequent gaps or implausible jumps. Apple’s source-priority behavior means pairing that monitor may also change which value your iPhone workout app displays.
Troubleshoot by the symptom you see
| Symptom | Likely checks | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| No heart-rate field appears | Model may lack a sensor; monitoring may be disabled; app may lack HealthKit or equivalent support. | Confirm the model feature, enable monitoring in the companion app and grant the required permissions. |
| Dashes or a dimmed value | Apple identifies this as a poor reading, commonly associated with contact or connection. | Reseat both earbuds, try another supplied tip and confirm the phone still shows an active connection. |
| Works while still but fails when walking | Motion may loosen the fit or change sensor contact. | Adjust the tip and seating, then test at the intended pace before relying on the workout record. |
| Fails mainly outdoors in winter | Cold can reduce blood flow in the ears. | Protect and warm the ears, then retest; do not interpret the missing value as a physiological zero. |
| Intermittent after a sweaty workout | Moisture, rotation or residue may be interrupting contact. | Stop safely, dry and clean the sensor and ear, reseat it and restart the reading. |
| One side works, the other does not | Unequal ear shape, tip size, earwax, irritation or a piercing can affect one sensor. | Fit each side independently, inspect the affected ear and try both earbuds together. |
| Two devices show different numbers | The app may be switching between earbuds, a watch and a separate monitor. | Identify the active source and compare repeated sessions under matching conditions. |
How to use a heart-rate number responsibly
Earbud heart-rate monitoring is best treated as a training estimate unless the manufacturer and a qualified professional have established a different use. A single spike, gap or disagreement does not identify a medical problem, and a smooth-looking graph does not prove clinical accuracy.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchFor training decisions, prioritize trends that remain stable across repeated sessions: whether the value appears continuously, whether it changes plausibly as effort changes and whether the same setup produces similar results. Record the earbud model, tip size, phone, app, temperature and whether another monitor was connected. This context helps you distinguish a repeatable pattern from a one-off contact failure.
Do not use an earbud reading to ignore symptoms such as chest pain, fainting or severe shortness of breath. Stop exercising and seek appropriate medical care when symptoms are concerning, regardless of what the app displays.
Evidence about Powerbeats Pro 2 should be read cautiously
Apple provides operational guidance about contact, cold, settings, permissions and source priority, but the material cited here does not establish a controlled independent accuracy result for Powerbeats Pro 2 during exercise. A hands-on comparison by Nick Harris-Fry in Tom’s Guide, published 18 October 2025, said the reviewer was unimpressed by the heart-rate tracking accuracy and usability, while describing the earhook as secure during vigorous workouts. That is one reviewer’s experience, not a clinical or laboratory validation.
You can read the review at Tom’s Guide’s Powerbeats Pro 2 and Powerbeats Fit comparison. Use it as a reminder that secure physical retention and reliable sensor data are different criteria.
A repeatable pre-workout routine
- Check that your exact earbuds have a dedicated heart-rate sensor.
- Charge and connect them, then confirm heart-rate monitoring is enabled in the companion app.
- Choose the tip that keeps the sensor against your ear; do not select solely for the best audio seal.
- Inspect and clean the sensor, remove moisture and check for earwax, irritation or nearby metal jewelry.
- Wear both earbuds when possible, particularly on Android.
- Open a compatible workout app and verify its health-data permissions.
- Take a brief stationary reading before starting movement.
- During the workout, treat gaps as a contact or environment warning and reseat only when it is safe.
- After several sessions, compare consistency with a separate monitor if the readings remain unreliable.
This routine cannot make a sensor clinically accurate, but it removes the most common preventable causes of missing or inconsistent exercise readings and tells you when continuing to adjust the earbuds is unlikely to help.
