To get a UK IP address, connect to a VPN server in the UK; websites will then usually see the VPN server’s IP address rather than your own. The provider becomes a party you must trust, and a VPN does not guarantee anonymity, faster speeds or access to streaming services. This article compares location information and third-party findings—it does not report first-hand testing.
How to get a UK IP address

Choose a VPN service that lists a UK endpoint. If you specifically need a London connection, check that London is listed; a general UK location does not necessarily mean a London server.

Connect, then check your apparent IP address using a reputable IP-checking site. Confirm that the reported country is the UK. A location result may not identify the exact physical server location.

A VPN encrypts traffic between your device and the VPN endpoint and changes the IP address destinations see. It does not make you unidentifiable: the VPN provider may see traffic, and accounts, cookies and device signals can still connect activity to you. Which?’s VPN guide explains these limits.

Will a UK VPN server improve speed or unlock streaming?
Speed depends on your connection and endpoint
A UK endpoint does not guarantee a particular speed. Your own connection, distance to the endpoint and server load all matter. Which? reports that its tests found speeds nearly always fell when a VPN was active, and that the endpoint country could make a significant difference. Treat TechRadar’s reported peak above 1,200 Mbps as a result from its own test conditions, not an expectation for your connection.

Streaming access can change or fail
Streaming platforms may detect and block VPN IP addresses, so connecting to the UK does not guarantee access to UK-specific content. Switching locations may also conflict with a service’s terms. TechRadar’s reported access results describe its tests; they do not promise that a particular service will work for you.
Is using a VPN in the UK banned by the Online Safety Act?
No blanket VPN ban is established by Ofcom’s guidance. The Online Safety Act creates duties for in-scope online services, including certain user-to-user, search and pornography services, to protect users in the UK. Ofcom says those duties concern regulated services, not a general prohibition on people using VPNs. It recognises that VPNs are commonly used and can offer privacy and anonymity benefits, while noting that they can also help users avoid IP-based restrictions. Ofcom’s guidance, last updated 13 October 2025, also says services restricting UK access must not actively promote or encourage ways to avoid those protections or restrictions.

That does not settle whether a particular use complies with a website’s terms, copyright rules or licensing restrictions. Check the relevant service’s rules rather than assuming that a VPN connection changes them.
Choosing a VPN for a UK IP address

Check the exact location. If London matters, confirm that the provider lists London rather than only saying it has UK coverage.

Read the privacy terms. A VPN shifts trust from your internet provider or local network to the VPN provider; it does not remove the need to assess how that provider handles traffic and account data.
