Start by matching the exact product and package details to the recall notice, then follow that notice’s safety and return instructions. Walmart’s U.S. policy says some recalled items qualify for a refund, return, or store credit; others may be refunded without being returned, or may require contacting the manufacturer. The remedy depends on the specific product, seller, and recall notice.
1. Check whether your exact groceries are included in the recall
- Open Walmart’s Product Recalls page and find the notice for the food. Walmart says its index is not all-inclusive, so also open the manufacturer’s or regulator’s notice linked to the recall.
- Compare the package with the notice: product name, brand, size, UPC, lot or date code, best-by date, and any listed sale geography. A recall can apply only to particular lots or locations, not every package of a brand.
- Follow the notice’s safety directions before arranging a refund. Do not eat food identified as unsafe, and do not take it back to a store if the notice says to discard it.
For example, a September 3, 2026 notice posted by the FDA for a specific lot of Great Value Organic Triple Berry 10 OZ said not to consume the product and to discard it or return it to Walmart for a full refund. That direction applies to the identified lot, not to other recalled foods. Read the FDA notice and verify the lot details.

2. Identify who sold the item and how you bought it
Walmart’s recalled-items policy covers U.S. Walmart stores, Walmart.com, and Walmart Business, but Marketplace purchases may follow different routes. Walmart’s return policy, updated August 17, 2026, says some recalled items are eligible for return, refund, or store credit from Walmart; for others, shoppers may need to work directly with the manufacturer for a repair, replacement, or refund. It also notes some items may qualify for a refund without being returned.

If it does not specify how to claim a refund, contact Walmart through its return or customer-service channels.
- Sold by a Marketplace seller: Check the notice for seller or manufacturer instructions and contact the seller or manufacturer as directed. Do not assume Walmart’s standard store return process will apply.
- Bought online and perishable: Walmart says perishable online orders cannot be mailed back. Start the refund through Walmart.com or the Walmart app, as directed by its Fresh Guarantee guidance.
3. Prepare proof of purchase and request the refund
For a store purchase
Bring the receipt if you have it, along with the recall notice or enough package information to identify the affected item. Walmart’s Fresh Guarantee says a receipt is required for a refund on fresh produce, meat, bakery, deli, dairy, and frozen goods. If you cannot find a receipt, ask whether Walmart can look up the purchase using the payment card. A no-receipt return may require government-issued photo ID and verification; a refund is not guaranteed.

Other payment types can have different timelines. Keep the refund confirmation and contact Walmart if the expected credit does not appear after the stated period. See Walmart’s refund guidance.
