Start with the receipt, not the game. Find which company actually processed the payment, then submit a truthful refund request through that company’s official support or account page as soon as possible. A game developer, mobile app store, console storefront, PC storefront, and payment processor can all be different companies.
Approval is not automatic. The outcome depends on the platform, country, purchase type, elapsed time, whether the game was launched, and whether virtual goods were consumed, changed, or transferred. Keep the transaction ID and every support confirmation until the case is closed.

What to do immediately
- Stop using the purchase. Do not spend virtual currency, equip a cosmetic item, activate a boost, trade an item, or launch the game if the applicable policy makes launch relevant.
- Locate the receipt or transaction history. Record the date, amount, currency, game, item, account, and transaction ID. A bank statement may show only the storefront or payment processor, which is more useful than the game logo.
- Identify the billing provider. The charge may have been processed by Apple, Google Play, PlayStation Store, Steam, Nintendo eShop, a PC publisher storefront, or another retailer.
- Use the provider’s official refund route. Choose the closest accurate reason, explain that the purchase was accidental, and submit once. Multiple conflicting requests can slow review.
- Save the confirmation. Keep the case number, submitted form, email, and screenshots. Do not dispute a legitimate accidental charge with your bank while a store review is pending unless the charge is genuinely unauthorized.
Acting quickly matters because each service sets its own deadline and conditions. A refund request is different from reporting fraud: describe who made the purchase accurately.

The game’s name on your device does not prove who took the payment. Check the purchase email, the account’s order history, and the detailed bank or card entry. Use the account that paid, not necessarily the account that plays the game.

If the charge is missing, check every Apple Account or Google Account that family members may have used. Also check whether a console has more than one user profile. Do not submit a fraud report merely because you are looking in the wrong account.
Apple App Store refunds
How to submit the request
- Sign in to reportaproblem.apple.com with the Apple Account that paid.
- Choose Request a refund.
- Select the reason that most accurately describes the accidental purchase.
- Select the game purchase and submit the request.
Apple says some purchases may be eligible and that eligibility varies by country or region. Apple’s support page, published May 20, 2026, says to allow 24 to 48 hours for a status update. That is an update window, not a promise that Apple will approve the request or that money will reach the payment method within that time.
If the purchase is not listed
Sign out and check each Apple Account used by the household. If the transaction still does not appear, contact Apple Support and provide the receipt, order number, and the account that appears on the charge. Explain that you are requesting help locating the transaction rather than claiming the charge was unauthorized.
Google Play refunds
Accidental purchase by a family member
Google says its refund rules depend on what was bought, when it was bought, how it was paid for, and the user’s location. If a friend or family member accidentally made the purchase while using your account, use Google Play’s refund request route and describe that situation accurately.
Unrecognized charge by an unknown person
Google treats a charge made by someone you do not know as a separate unauthorized-charge issue. Its guidance says to report an unauthorized charge within 120 days. Do not use that route for a known child, partner, or friend’s accidental purchase; the distinction can affect the investigation and the information Google requests.
When the developer may help
Google notes that a game developer may be able to help with purchase problems and may process refunds under its own policy and applicable law. Contact the developer when Google cannot locate the order, when the problem concerns delivery of an item, or when the store directs you there. Include the Google order number, but never send a password or full payment-card number.

PlayStation Store refunds
US rules for in-game consumables
On PlayStation’s US support page, an in-game consumable refund requires all three conditions below:
- The request is made within 14 days of purchase.
- The purchase was made through PlayStation Store.
- The game has not been launched after the purchase.
Consumables include examples such as virtual currency, skins or emotes, and experience boosts. Items bought outside gameplay are delivered when the game is next launched; items bought during gameplay are delivered immediately. That delivery distinction explains why launching the game can affect eligibility.
How to request it
- Open your PlayStation transaction history.
- Select the eligible transaction.
- Choose Request Refund.
- Follow the prompts and retain the confirmation.
The page’s conditions are for its US policy scope. Other countries can have different storefront rules, and local law may provide additional rights. Check the support page for the country associated with the paying account rather than assuming the US checklist applies everywhere.
Steam in-game purchase refunds
The separate 48-hour rule
Steam’s normal refund rule for a full game—often discussed as 14 days and less than two hours of play—does not automatically apply to an in-game item. Steam states that in-game purchases in Valve-developed games are eligible within 48 hours if the item has not been consumed, modified, or transferred.
For games made by third-party developers, the developer can choose to enable refunds on those terms. Steam says eligibility is shown at the time of purchase. An item that has been opened, upgraded, spent, traded, or sent to another account may no longer meet the condition.

- Sign in to the Steam account that made the payment.
- Open Steam Support and select the purchase from the account’s help list.
- Choose the refund option and explain that the purchase was accidental.
- State whether the item is untouched and whether it has been transferred.
Steam also says you may submit a request for review even when the request falls outside the stated rules. That is a request for an individual decision, not an entitlement. Do not present the full-game 14-day rule as the deadline for an in-game purchase.

Nintendo eShop: mistaken purchases are generally final
Nintendo Support says, “We are unable to provide refunds or exchanges for mistaken purchases.” Nintendo’s US digital-products policy says payments are final and non-refundable except when Nintendo authorizes a refund or applicable law requires one.
That means an accidental downloaded-game or DLC purchase normally does not qualify simply because it was unintended. You can still contact Nintendo Support if the situation is unresolved, especially when the transaction was duplicated, technically defective, or covered by a legal right. Do not promise yourself that support will reverse a mistaken purchase.
Nintendo also points to parental controls as a way to restrict future eShop purchases. Set those controls after documenting the current case, because changing account settings does not itself reverse a completed payment.

For a real-money transaction, the storefront that charged you usually controls the refund. A publisher’s support team may nevertheless be the correct contact for delivery failures, account-linking problems, or purchases made with in-game currency.
Activision’s published support guidance illustrates the distinction: it says Activision Support does not refund accidental purchases made with in-game currency. For real-money purchases, it directs customers to the retailer that processed the payment, such as a console store, Steam, a PC retailer, Apple, or Google. That is Activision’s policy, not a universal rule for every game.
If another game’s support page gives different instructions, follow that game’s documented route. Provide the storefront receipt and the game account identifier, but avoid sharing login credentials, recovery codes, or a complete card number.

Match the request to the purchase type

Write a clear, truthful refund request
A support agent needs a verifiable event, not a long argument. Include:
- The account email or platform username, without a password.
- Storefront and country or region.
- Game title and exact item.
- Date, time zone if known, amount, currency, and transaction ID.
- Who made the purchase and why it was accidental.
- Whether the game was launched and whether the item, currency, or boost was used, changed, gifted, or transferred.
- Your requested remedy: a refund to the original payment method.
Example wording:
“On [date], account [account identifier] purchased [item] in [game] through [store]. The purchase was accidental. The item has [not been used / been used], and the game was [not launched / launched] afterward. Transaction ID [number], amount [amount and currency]. Please review this request under the policy for my country.”
Use the actual details in place of the bracketed fields. Do not call a known family member’s mistake “fraud,” and do not claim that an item was unused if the account consumed it.
If a child made the purchase
First determine whether the child used the paying adult’s Apple Account, Google Account, console profile, or a separate child profile. Then submit through the platform that billed the account and identify the purchaser as a family member. Keep the child’s explanation factual and brief.
After submitting, secure the account: require a password or biometric approval for every store purchase, remove saved payment methods where practical, enable console or eShop parental controls, and review family-sharing permissions. These steps prevent another charge but do not change the eligibility of the existing transaction.

If you cannot find the transaction
- Search email for the game name, storefront name, “receipt,” “order,” and “purchase.”
- Check each Apple Account or Google Account used on the device.
- Review console and Steam transaction histories, including other user profiles.
- Compare the exact date and amount with the bank or card statement.
- Check whether a subscription, bundle, or currency pack produced a receipt under a parent transaction.
- Contact the billing provider with the statement descriptor and approximate date, asking it to locate the order.
A bank descriptor that names a payment intermediary does not establish that the game developer charged you directly. Start with the company that can see the order record.
What to do if the request is denied
Read the reason before appealing
A denial may mean the request missed a deadline, the wrong account was used, the item was consumed, the game was launched, or the country’s policy differs. Compare the decision with the actual transaction details rather than submitting identical forms repeatedly.
Correct factual errors
If the store misidentified the purchase, reply with the receipt, transaction ID, and a concise correction. For example, explain that the order was for an unused item but the support form selected the wrong product. Ask for manual review when the automated page cannot handle the case.
Escalate only through legitimate channels
Use the provider’s official support escalation, the publisher’s support page when it controls the relevant transaction, or rights available under the law of the paying account’s country. A card chargeback is appropriate for an actually unauthorized or fraudulent charge; using it to bypass a store’s accidental-purchase decision can suspend the account and complicate recovery.

The published terms are not one global refund guarantee. Apple says eligibility varies by country or region. Google ties rules to location, purchase details, timing, and payment method. PlayStation’s 14-day consumable checklist is explicitly for its US page. Steam’s 48-hour in-game rule has conditions about the developer and item state. Nintendo’s US policy includes exceptions authorized by Nintendo or required by law.
Use the policy for the country attached to the paying account and check the current page before relying on a deadline. Local consumer-protection law can add rights, but those rights depend on the jurisdiction, the type of digital content, consent to immediate delivery, and whether performance has begun. A support agent may ask for information that establishes those facts.
Prevention after the case is closed
- Require approval for every purchase on mobile, console, and PC storefronts.
- Use separate child profiles and do not share an adult store password.
- Turn on purchase notifications and review receipts promptly.
- Remove saved cards from devices that children can access, or use a limited-balance payment method.
- Disable one-click purchasing where the platform allows it.
- Teach players to pause before confirming a currency pack, bundle, or timed offer.
- Keep a record of the account and region that paid, so a future request reaches the correct provider.
The practical rule is simple: identify the biller, preserve the item, submit quickly, and describe the event accurately. The platform’s written policy and the law governing the purchase—not the fact that the button was pressed accidentally—determine whether money is returned.
