The VPN routes your traffic through that server, so websites generally see the server’s Norwegian public IP instead of the IP assigned by your usual internet connection. This changes your apparent network location; it does not give you Norwegian residency or guarantee access to a particular service or streaming catalog.
How to get a Norwegian IP address
- Choose a VPN with a Norway location. Check its current server list and confirm it supports your device. Country availability and server inventories can change.
- Install the provider’s official app and sign in. In the location list or map, select Norway and connect. For example, Proton VPN describes choosing a Norway marker in its app, while NordVPN describes selecting Norway from its server list. See their Norway server information and Norway server page.
- Check the public IP’s reported location. Use an IP lookup service to confirm that the address now geolocates to Norway. IP databases can disagree, and this check does not prove that a particular website will accept the address.
- If a site still detects another location, reconnect to a different Norway endpoint if one is available, then close and reopen the site or app. Check whether account settings or browser location permissions affect what it reports. These steps may help diagnose a mismatch; they do not bypass a service’s access rules.

What a Norwegian IP does—and does not—change
A VPN replaces the public-facing IP seen by destination websites with the VPN server’s address. Services that rely on IP geolocation may therefore treat the connection as coming from Norway. But an IP address is only one possible location signal. A service may also consider your account, device, browser, GPS permissions, cookies, or payment details, and the sources here do not establish that changing your IP satisfies those checks.

Websites can still identify you through account sign-ins and other tracking methods. A VPN routes traffic through another network operator and can protect it from some forms of observation on a local network, but it does not prevent every form of tracking.

Will a Norwegian VPN address let you watch NRK?
Do not assume so. NRK says geographic rights agreements can restrict where, how often, and for how long programs are available. Its VPN and NRK TV help page says it cannot allow VPN use because it cannot verify whether traffic comes from Norway or abroad, and advises turning off the VPN to access all NRK TV content.
NRK describes a separate option for Norwegian residents traveling within the EEA: sign in and confirm Norwegian residence electronically with BankID or MinID. Outside the EEA, NRK says only a limited selection is available. These conditions concern eligibility and viewing rights; a Norwegian IP address alone does not establish residence or guarantee access.

If you are physically in Norway but NRK thinks you are abroad
NRK lists several possible causes: a foreign IP address, an active VPN, outdated device software, or an error in the internet provider’s location data. Its advice is to disable the VPN when it is interfering with access. NRK also describes adding listed NRK domains to a VPN exception list. That sends those requests outside the encrypted VPN tunnel, so the VPN is effectively off for that traffic; it is not a way to conceal VPN use or guarantee access. The exact exception-list controls depend on the VPN app.

Proton VPN’s own NRK support article says its streaming instructions require a paid plan and describe connecting to a Plus server in Norway (Proton VPN’s NRK instructions). That provider guidance does not override NRK’s broader warning, and compatibility may vary. Neither provider instructions nor a successful IP lookup is an independent test that NRK will accept a connection.

How to compare VPNs for a Norway connection
Start with the current country list, supported devices, and whether the provider offers a shared or dedicated Norway address. Then consider privacy and security documentation—including the scope of any independent audits—performance from your own location, and refund and renewal terms. Finally, check the requirements of the specific service you need; a provider’s Norway endpoint does not establish that the service will accept it.

Server counts, plan requirements, features, and throughput claims can change. A vendor’s stated maximum speed or server inventory is not a comparison test, so avoid choosing on those figures alone.

Do you need special hardware?
No. The basic setup requires a VPN app and a service that offers a Norway endpoint. A VPN-capable router is optional: it can route traffic from multiple devices through a VPN, but it does not create a Norwegian endpoint by itself. You still need a VPN provider with a Norway server.

Why the IP check and a website’s result may differ
An IP lookup reports how its database classifies an address. Another service may use a different geolocation database or additional checks, so it can report a different country or reject the connection even when the IP lookup says Norway. Treat the lookup as a check that the VPN connection is active—not as proof of eligibility or access.
