To get a Malaysian IP address while abroad, connect to a VPN service that offers a Malaysia location: install its app, select Malaysia, and connect. Check whether the location is physical or virtual if the server’s actual country matters to you, and confirm that your plan includes Malaysia access.
How to get a Malaysian IP address
- Choose a VPN with a Malaysia location. Check the provider’s current server list and plan details. If you need the server hardware to be in Malaysia—not merely to provide a Malaysian IP—look for a clear physical-versus-virtual location disclosure.
- Install the provider’s app on the device you want to use, then sign in or finish setup.
- Select Malaysia. Depending on the app, you may choose the country on a map or find it in a country or server list.
- Connect. The VPN routes your traffic through its network and presents a Malaysian IP address to sites and services that see that connection.
- Check the connection if a site does not respond as expected. Confirm the VPN is connected, then review the site’s access rules and the provider’s support information. A Malaysian IP does not guarantee access to a particular service.
What to check before choosing a provider
Physical or virtual server location
A Malaysia location in an app does not necessarily mean the server hardware is physically in Malaysia. ExpressVPN describes its Malaysia location as virtual: the physical server is in a nearby country, while the connection receives a Malaysian IP. Whether Malaysia is included in your plan
Server access can differ by tier. Proton VPN says its Malaysia servers are available on Plus. Its free tier instead connects through Quick Connect to a free server or lets users select a random free server; it does not describe Malaysia as a free-tier choice. How the app selects a Malaysian location
The basic process is similar across providers, though the interface varies. NordVPN describes selecting the Malaysia map pin or choosing Malaysia from the country list. Private Internet Access describes signing up, installing its app, and selecting Malaysia; its page identifies its Malaysia endpoint as Kuala Lumpur. What a Malaysian IP address can—and cannot—do
A VPN changes the apparent network location for traffic routed through its tunnel and encrypts that traffic between your device and the VPN service. This can make a connection appear to come from Malaysia, but it does not guarantee that a bank, broadcaster, streaming platform, or other site will accept it. Services may apply their own location checks and access restrictions.
The provider pages cited here explain their own Malaysia locations and app flows. They are not independent audits of current speed, reliability, privacy, or access to specific Malaysian websites. Server inventories, plan access, and provider policies can change, so verify current details directly with the service.

Common questions to ask before connecting
- Does the provider list Malaysia? Check its current location list rather than assuming that a regional server provides a Malaysian IP.
- Is Malaysia available on my plan? Confirm tier restrictions; a free plan may not include the same country choices as a paid plan.
- Does “Malaysia” mean the hardware is there? Not always. Check whether the provider identifies the endpoint as virtual.
- Will a Malaysian IP unlock a specific site? It may not. The site’s rules and detection methods still apply.
