Google Drive’s documented workflows do not promise to convert an ordinary HEIC photo into a JPG when you download it. To get an actual JPG file, export the photo as JPEG from an image app or converter, then check the saved file’s extension. Google Photos can import HEIC photos from Drive, but that import alone does not guarantee a JPG download.
Can Google Drive convert HEIC to JPG?
Google’s Drive API documentation lists JPEG export for certain Google Workspace document types, but that is not evidence that Drive converts ordinary HEIC image files. Google’s available documentation does not settle whether a direct download of an HEIC photo retains HEIC or offers a JPG option. Check the downloaded file’s extension rather than assuming it was converted.

For a guaranteed JPG copy, use an image app or converter that explicitly offers JPEG or JPG export. If you prefer a Google-connected option, a Google Workspace Marketplace listing for HEIC Image Viewer Decoder claims it can open HEIC/HEIF and save as JPEG or PNG. That is the developer’s claim, not an independent test; verify that it works with your file and account before relying on it.

Import the HEIC photo from Drive into Google Photos
Google Photos accepts HEIC files through its Drive-import workflow. This adds a separate copy to Photos; edits made to the Drive file do not apply to the Photos copy, and edits in Photos do not apply to the Drive file.

- On a computer, open Google Photos and choose the option to import from Google Drive.
- Find and select the HEIC photo, then upload it to Photos. Google’s help says the image must be larger than 256 pixels.
- If you use a work or school account, Google directs you to download the photo from Drive and re-upload it to Photos instead.
- If you specifically need a
.jpgfile, check the downloaded result. Google documents the HEIC import, but does not promise that a subsequent Photos download will be JPG.
Choose the workflow that fits your need

Check the result before sharing it
After conversion or download, confirm that the file ends in .jpg or .jpeg and opens as expected. If a website or app specifically requires JPG, do not rely only on a preview or on the fact that the photo passed through Google Photos; use an explicit JPEG export when the result is uncertain.
