Sign in at portal.cfx.re with the Cfx account that will own or manage the server, create a server registration key, and enter that key in txAdmin or in the server.cfg loaded by FXServer. The registration key is free. It is separate from any paid high-slot entitlement, GTA V ownership, framework license, Steam Web API key, Discord token, or Tebex secret.
What a FiveM “Keymaster” key is today
“Keymaster key” is legacy wording that still appears in search results and older tutorials. The current official process uses the Cfx.re Portal. The value you generate there is a server registration or license key: a credential that lets a public FXServer authenticate with Cfx.re services.

FiveM’s setup documentation describes the registration as a free license key. The command reference defines sv_licenseKey as a string variable for the server license and directs administrators to obtain one at portal.cfx.re. For a public server, the key belongs to the Cfx account that will manage that server, so create it while signed in to the correct account rather than a temporary personal account.
- Public server: provide the generated key through txAdmin or
sv_licenseKeyin the activeserver.cfg. - LAN-only server:
sv_lan trueskips license-key checks, but this mode is not a substitute for a key on a publicly listed server. - More than 48 slots: the registration key remains necessary, and a separate FiveM Element Club Argentum-or-higher entitlement may be required under the hosting guidance. That entitlement is not the key itself.
Before you create the key
Use the account that will own the server
Choose the Cfx account that your team will retain for server administration. txAdmin links to a Cfx account during setup, and the registration key should be created under the account associated with that management role. Using an account that nobody on the operations team can access can make later maintenance, rotation, or entitlement checks unnecessarily difficult.

Decide whether you are deploying with txAdmin or manually
txAdmin is the recommended route for a new server because its recipe deployer asks for the license value and writes the configuration for you. A vanilla FXServer installation gives you more direct control over the server-data directory, configuration file, and launch command, but you must place the convar and start the correct file yourself.
| Installation path | How the key is supplied | Best fit | Main responsibility |
|---|---|---|---|
| txAdmin recipe deployment | Paste it into the recipe deployer’s license-key field | New servers and guided setup | Link the correct Cfx account and let txAdmin write the configuration |
| Vanilla/manual FXServer | Add sv_licenseKey "YOUR_GENERATED_KEY" to the executed server.cfg |
Administrators who want manual file and launch control | Ensure FXServer starts from the intended server-data directory with the intended config |
How to create a registration key in the Cfx.re Portal
- Open https://portal.cfx.re/ and sign in with the Cfx account that will manage the server.
- Open the area for server registration keys. The current interface labels the action Create a key.
- Enter a recognizable display name, such as
My RP ProductionorLocal Development. The name helps you identify the key later; it is not the value that goes intoserver.cfg. - Click GENERATE.
- Copy the generated value immediately and store it in a password manager or another restricted deployment secret store. Do not publish it in a screenshot, forum post, issue, or public configuration repository.
The portal-generated value is the server credential. A display name, server name, hostname, Steam identifier, or GTA V license number cannot be substituted for it.
Recommended method: add the key with txAdmin
txAdmin is bundled with the normal FXServer workflow and provides a browser-based recipe deployer. The labels below follow the current setup flow.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Start FXServer. Launch the FXServer artifact so that txAdmin becomes available in a browser.
- Open txAdmin. Use the local address and port shown by FXServer, then complete txAdmin’s initial setup if this is the first launch.
- Link txAdmin to your Cfx account. Authorize the account that will own and manage the server. If a browser is already signed in to a different Cfx account, check the account identity before approving access.
- Choose a recipe or template. Select the server recipe that matches your intended setup and continue until the recipe deployer reaches its input-parameters step.
- Open the Portal link. The input-parameters page includes a Portal link. Follow it, sign in if necessary, and use Create a key followed by GENERATE.
- Copy and paste the key. Return to txAdmin and paste the generated value into the recipe deployer’s license-key field. Paste the complete string without quotation marks unless the field itself instructs you otherwise.
- Run the recipe. Start deployment and let txAdmin write the server configuration and download or arrange the selected resources.
- Save and run the server. After deployment finishes, review the generated configuration, save it, and start the server from txAdmin.
If txAdmin reports that no key was provided, return to the recipe input-parameters step and confirm that the field contains the portal value rather than the display name. If the server was already deployed, inspect the generated configuration and the startup log to verify which file txAdmin is executing.

Manual method: put the key in server.cfg
A manual installation uses the same portal-generated value but requires you to place it in the exact configuration file FXServer loads.
- Download and extract an FXServer artifact. Keep the server binaries separate from the server-data directory that contains resources and configuration.
- Open the active configuration. Locate the
server.cfgthat your launch command will execute. If you have multiple copies, use the one in the server-data directory referenced by your command. - Add the license convar. Put this line in the file, replacing the placeholder with the complete generated value:
sv_licenseKey "YOUR_GENERATED_KEY"
- Save the file. Keep the quotation marks shown in the example and avoid adding spaces or line breaks inside the key.
- Launch FXServer with that configuration. From the server-data directory, use the normal startup command with
+exec server.cfg. The important part is that the command points to the same file you edited. - Read the startup output. If authentication fails, first confirm the copied value and the configuration path before changing unrelated resources or ports.
The command reference describes sv_licenseKey as a string variable that sets the server license key and points administrators to the Cfx.re Portal. A key placed in an unused file, a resource manifest, or a shell variable that is never passed to FXServer has no effect.
Where the key belongs in a real deployment
In a direct FXServer launch
Put the convar in the server.cfg named by the launch option. For example, a command that includes +exec server.cfg must resolve that filename in the server-data context from which you launch FXServer. If you maintain separate development and production directories, each environment must load the configuration containing the key intended for that environment.

Paste the key into the recipe deployer’s license-key input. txAdmin then writes the server configuration. When troubleshooting, check the deployed configuration and txAdmin’s selected server-data directory rather than editing an unrelated copy elsewhere on disk.

In a hosting control panel
Use the panel’s server configuration or startup-variable field only if it ultimately writes or passes the value to the FXServer instance. Hosting interfaces differ, so verify the resulting server.cfg or startup command and keep the value hidden from public logs where the panel supports secret variables.
If you want a hosted FiveM instance after configuring the key, Godlike.Host provides FiveM game-server hosting through its own game panel, with free DDoS protection and up to three free backups a day. It is not on Cfx.re’s list of authorized FiveM hosts (fivem.net, 10 Oct 2026).
What the key does—and what it does not do
- It authenticates a public Cfx.re server. FXServer uses the registration value when connecting to Cfx.re services and participating in the public-server workflow.
- It is not a GTA V game license. It does not replace ownership or installation requirements for the game and server artifacts.
- It is not a framework license. Frameworks and resources can have their own terms, configuration, or credentials.
- It is not a Steam Web API key. Do not paste a Steam credential into
sv_licenseKey. - It is not a Discord token or Tebex secret. Keep those credentials in their own protected settings and never combine them with the Cfx registration value.
- It is not a high-slot purchase. The registration key is free; a separate Element Club entitlement can apply when a hosted server exceeds 48 slots.
Public servers, LAN servers, and slot capacity
| Server purpose or size | License-key behavior | Additional requirement |
|---|---|---|
| Public server with up to 48 slots | Use the generated Cfx.re registration key through txAdmin or sv_licenseKey |
The registration key is described as free in the official setup documentation |
| Public server with more than 48 slots | Still use the Cfx.re registration key associated with the server account | Hosting guidance says FiveM Element Club Argentum or above may be required; check current Portal terms |
LAN-only testing with sv_lan true |
License-key checks are skipped | This setting makes the server LAN-only and does not authorize a public listing |
The 48-slot threshold comes from the cited Cfx.re hosting guidance and should be treated as a capacity rule separate from registration. Product and entitlement terms can change, so confirm the current requirement in the Portal before expanding a hosted public server.
How to keep the key safe
- Limit access. Give the portal account and deployment secret only to people who administer the server.
- Do not commit it to source control. Keep it out of public Git repositories, paste sites, screenshots, crash reports, and support tickets.
- Protect backups. A backup of
server.cfgcontains the credential if the line is present; encrypt backups and restrict their permissions. - Separate environments. Use clear display names such as production and development so you can identify which credential is deployed where.
- Rotate after exposure. If the value appears in a public post or log, revoke or replace it in the Portal if that control is available, then update every server and deployment that used the old value.
There is no universal recovery time published for an exposed key. Treat replacement as an operational change: update the secret, restart or redeploy the affected server, and check the startup output for successful authentication.

Troubleshooting common license-key errors
“No license key specified”
This means FXServer did not receive a usable value. In txAdmin, reopen the recipe deployer and fill its license-key field. In a manual installation, add sv_licenseKey "YOUR_KEY" to the exact server.cfg loaded by the launch command. Then restart FXServer.
- Confirm that the line is not commented out with a leading
#or;. - Check spelling and capitalization: the convar is
sv_licenseKey. - Verify that the value is inside matching quotation marks and has no accidental spaces or truncated characters.
- Check the startup command for
+exec server.cfgand confirm the working directory or path resolves to the file you edited. - If txAdmin generated the configuration, inspect its selected server-data directory rather than a similarly named local file.
Authentication or invalid-license errors
Open the Portal and compare the deployed value with the generated key. Copy it again if necessary, then confirm that the server is loading the expected configuration. Legacy Cfx.re support guidance specifically recommends double-checking both the key and the launch context, because a valid key in the wrong file produces the same practical failure as a missing key.
The key was exposed
Assume that anyone who could read the post, screenshot, repository, or log can use the credential. Revoke or replace it in the Portal if that control is available, update every deployment that used it, and restart those instances. Remove the exposed copy from public locations where possible, but do not rely on deletion alone after disclosure.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The server has more than 48 slots
Do not generate a second registration key as a substitute for capacity entitlement. Keep the account-associated key in the server and check whether the hosting setup requires FiveM Element Club Argentum or a higher level. Verify the current terms in the Cfx.re Portal because capacity rules can change.
Best Value
Local testing works, but public listing does not
A configuration with sv_lan true can run LAN-only while skipping key checks. That behavior does not prove that a public deployment is authenticated. Remove the LAN-only setting for the public configuration and provide the normal registration key.
Questions administrators commonly ask
Where do I find my CFX license key?
Open portal.cfx.re, sign in to the managing Cfx account, open the server registration-key area, and select Create a key. The generated value is what you paste into txAdmin or assign to sv_licenseKey.
Do I have to pay for a FiveM license key?
No. The registration key itself is described as free in the official setup documentation. Payment can apply to a separate Element Club capacity entitlement when a hosted public server exceeds 48 slots; that is not a fee for generating the key.
Recommended Free Tools
Can I use one key on several servers?
The official workflow here establishes how to create and associate a key with the managing Cfx account, but it does not publish a universal multi-server policy. Use clearly named keys and follow the current Portal terms for your deployment arrangement rather than assuming that a single value is appropriate for every instance.
Can I run without a key?
For LAN-only operation, sv_lan true skips license-key checks. A public server still needs the normal Cfx.re authentication path and a registration key.
Is the old Keymaster website required?
No. “Keymaster” is the familiar legacy name. The current official workflow directs administrators to the Cfx.re Portal at portal.cfx.re.
Quick Recap
Quick deployment checklist
- Sign in to the Cfx account that will manage the server.
- Create a key in the Portal and give it a recognizable display name.
- Copy the generated value without exposing it.
- For txAdmin, paste it into the recipe deployer’s license-key field.
- For manual FXServer, add
sv_licenseKey "YOUR_GENERATED_KEY"to the executedserver.cfg. - Start the server and verify the startup output shows successful authentication.
- If the server is public, do not rely on
sv_lan true. - If you plan more than 48 slots, check the separate Element Club capacity requirement.
