This changes the network address websites see; it does not make you a Dutch resident, provide a Dutch identity, or guarantee that a particular service will accept your connection.
What you need before connecting
Choose a VPN that currently lists a Netherlands server and supports your device. Check whether your plan lets you select that location manually: free-plan access and server availability vary by provider and plan. For example, Proton VPN documents Netherlands servers and an app-based connection flow, but its server and plan details may change; confirm current availability before subscribing. Proton VPN’s Netherlands location information is provider documentation, not independent verification.

When comparing services, look for supported devices, available Netherlands exits on your plan, and documented DNS, IPv6, and kill-switch behavior for your operating system. Also review the privacy policy, jurisdiction, logging claims, independent audits, price and plan limits, and whether the destination service accepts shared VPN IP addresses. Provider statements about privacy, audits, or speed should be treated as claims to check—not as proof that a service is the best or that a particular IP will work.
Connect to a Netherlands VPN server
- Install the provider’s official app from its website or your device’s official app store, then sign in.
- In the app, select a server or location labeled Netherlands. Make sure your plan allows you to choose that location rather than assigning a location automatically.
- Enable the kill switch and DNS leak protection if the app offers them. Check the provider’s instructions for your specific operating system: the availability and behavior of these features can differ by platform and settings. Proton VPN documents DNS protection and a kill switch; NordVPN likewise notes that kill-switch behavior varies by platform and configuration. Proton VPN kill-switch documentation and NordVPN’s kill-switch guidance describe their own apps and features.
- Connect, then visit an IP-check website and confirm that it reports the Netherlands as your public IP’s country. This verifies the location reported by that checker; it does not prove that every website will treat the connection as Dutch.
If the IP check does not show the Netherlands
- Confirm the VPN app says it is connected, and that the selected server is in the Netherlands.
- Disconnect and reconnect to a Netherlands server, then check the public IP again.
- Review split-tunneling settings. If the browser or app is excluded from the VPN tunnel, it may use your regular connection.
- Check the app’s network and DNS settings, including any IPv6 handling options, using instructions for your operating system. VPN behavior can vary by provider, app, platform, and configuration.
IP-check websites can report location differently, and the sources cited here do not certify a particular checker. If one result conflicts with another, confirm the VPN connection and selected exit server before drawing conclusions.

What a Dutch IP does—and does not—change
A VPN routes covered traffic through its server, so destination websites see the VPN exit IP instead of your connection’s original public IP. The VPN operator becomes a party you must trust with the traffic it handles. A Dutch IP is a network-location signal, not proof of identity, residence, or eligibility for Dutch public services. Websites may also consider account details, cookies, device or browser signals, and their own access rules, so a VPN connection cannot guarantee access to a service.
A VPN does not by itself make you anonymous or prevent account logins, cookies, browser fingerprinting, malware, or provider-side logging. Its privacy protections depend in part on how the provider operates and how its app is configured; no provider’s logging claims are independently verified here.

Keep the rest of your security in place
A VPN is an additional network layer, not a replacement for basic account and device security. The Federal Trade Commission says, “Because of the widespread use of encryption, connecting through a public Wi-Fi network is usually safe.” It also advises checking for HTTPS and keeping security software, the operating system, and the browser updated. Use unique passwords and multi-factor authentication for sensitive accounts. Read the FTC’s public Wi-Fi guidance.
