How to Get a CRT-Like Retro Gaming Picture Without a CRT TV

The practical answer depends on your source. If you emulate games, use a RetroArch CRT shader and tune it for your display. If you play original consoles, put a video scaler or processor between the console and modern TV. In both cases, select the TV’s Game picture mode, then adjust brightness because simulated scanlines intentionally make the image darker.

A convincing CRT-style image is more than a set of horizontal lines. A good simulation can combine scanlines with phosphor-mask patterns, blending, curvature, interlacing, bloom and signal softness. Those effects are configurable approximations, not proof that an LCD or OLED reproduces every behavior of a physical CRT.

What makes an image look like a CRT?

Old televisions did not display pixels as perfectly separated, evenly lit squares. The visible result came from a combination of the tube, phosphor layout, beam behavior, signal quality and the television’s geometry. A modern display can imitate several of those cues in software or hardware.

Effect What it changes Why you might want it
Scanlines Alternating darker and brighter horizontal rows Recreates the line structure associated with many 240p and 480i games
Phosphor or shadow mask Adds a repeating red, green and blue dot, slot or grille pattern Controls texture, color separation and the sense of a physical screen surface
Blur and blending Softens hard pixel edges and mixes neighboring colors Approximates the way a tube and analog signal can turn blocky pixels into a continuous image
Curvature Bends the image toward the edges Suggests a curved consumer set rather than a flat panel
Interlacing Models alternating fields used by some video modes Useful when a game or console actually outputs an interlaced signal
Bloom or glow Lets bright areas spread into nearby pixels Adds the luminous, less-clinical appearance of a tube

Libretro’s CRT shader catalog describes these as separate characteristics, and different presets prioritize different combinations. Some aim for a crisp arcade-like picture; others emphasize softness, curvature or signal artifacts. Treat a preset as a bundle of design decisions rather than a simple “scanlines on” switch. See the Libretro CRT shader guide.

Choose the right route for your setup

Route Best for What you need Main trade-offs
RetroArch shader Emulated games on a compatible PC, handheld or other RetroArch device RetroArch, a video driver that supports the shader format, and enough graphics performance for the chosen preset No dedicated scaler purchase, but compatibility and performance vary by platform and shader
Dedicated scaler or processor Original consoles connected to a modern TV or monitor A processor with the correct input and console cables, plus an HDMI display Costs money and adds another device, but handles the console’s real video signal before the TV receives it

Before choosing, answer six questions: Are you emulating or using original hardware? What inputs does your console or device provide? What output resolution does your display accept? Do you prefer sharp pixels or a softer tube-like image? How much processing performance or setup complexity can you accept? What is your budget?

Make emulated games look like a CRT in RetroArch

What RetroArch shaders do

RetroArch applies a shader to the rendered game image before it reaches the display. Its official shader page explains that presets can reproduce the look and feel of older CRT monitors, be stacked together, and be adjusted through parameters. When your platform and configured video driver support it, RetroArch recommends the Slang shader format; the correct format still depends on the device and driver you use. Read the official RetroArch shader overview for the format guidance relevant to your installation.

Basic setup

  1. Start the game in RetroArch. Use the core and content you normally play, because the shader will be evaluated at the same resolution and frame rate as your real session.
  2. Open the in-game Quick Menu. The usual path is Quick Menu → Shaders. If shaders are disabled, enable the shader toggle shown in that menu.
  3. Load a preset. Choose a light CRT preset first. A simple scanline-and-blend preset is easier to evaluate than a complex mega-shader.
  4. Apply the preset and look at several scenes. Check a bright title screen, a dark level, fine text and a fast-moving scene. A setting that looks good on one screen can crush shadow detail or make text shimmer elsewhere.
  5. Save only after testing. Save a game-specific or core-specific preset when you know the image works for the games you actually play. Keeping a separate global preset makes it easy to return to a neutral baseline.

Tune in the order that matters

  1. Set aspect ratio and scaling first. A shader cannot correct a stretched 4:3 game. Select the aspect-ratio option that matches the content and make sure integer scaling, viewport size and crop settings are intentional.
  2. Choose sharp or soft. If you want clearly defined pixels, start with restrained blending and a modest mask. If you want a small living-room television look, increase softness gradually.
  3. Add a mask. Slot-mask, aperture-grille and other patterns change the texture and brightness of the image. Increase the strength until the pattern is visible at your normal viewing distance, then stop before it becomes a distracting overlay.
  4. Adjust scanline strength. Strong scanlines can make 240p games look authentic but can also hide thin horizontal details. Reduce their intensity for a brighter, more legible picture.
  5. Add curvature, bloom and signal effects last. These are stylistic choices and can make the image less sharp or more demanding to render. Introduce one effect at a time so you know what changed.
  6. Evaluate at your actual resolution and seating distance. The Libretro catalog notes that some modern, elaborate CRT shaders look better at 1440p or higher, while the increased resolution and effect complexity can demand more processing.

When to try CRT-Royale

CRT-Royale is an advanced, highly configurable RetroArch shader. Its documentation says the default look tends toward a small, flat slot-mask television with sharp scanlines. That is a starting point, not a universal reference: real CRTs differ in softness, curvature, phosphor structure, convergence and other traits, and players have different memories of what looks right. The CRT-Royale documentation explicitly treats those preferences as tunable.

Use CRT-Royale when a basic preset no longer gives you enough control. Start with its defaults, then change only the variables tied to your goal: mask style and strength for phosphor texture, scanline settings for line visibility, bloom for bright-area spread, curvature for geometry, and sharpness or convergence controls for edge definition. Save a custom preset after each stable group of changes rather than changing everything at once.

Keep shader performance under control

  • If the game stutters, first return to a lighter preset and confirm that the problem disappears.
  • Disable optional curvature, bloom, signal or mask effects one at a time to identify the expensive feature.
  • Use the shader format supported by your video driver instead of forcing an incompatible format.
  • Test at the resolution you will actually use. A shader that is smooth in a small preview can become costly when the display runs at 1440p or 4K.
  • Do not compensate for a slow shader by enabling frame skipping unless you accept uneven motion. A lighter effect is usually the better trade-off.

CRT-Royale’s own guidance recommends tuning or disabling slower options to reach the performance your hardware can sustain. The goal is a stable frame rate first; visual complexity comes second.

Use a scaler or processor with an original console

Why a console needs extra hardware

An original console may output composite, component, RGB or another analog signal that a modern TV cannot accept directly, or that the TV would process poorly. A dedicated scaler receives that signal, converts it to a display-friendly format, scales it to the target resolution and can add CRT-style processing before sending HDMI to the screen.

RetroTINK describes its range as covering simple plug-and-play adapters through high-end processors for vintage consoles. Its official product overview explains the general role of this equipment. You still need to verify the exact console cable, signal type and display compatibility for the model you select.

What to check before buying

  • Console output: Identify whether the system uses composite, S-Video, component, RGB, SCART or another connection. A cable that physically fits is not automatically wired for the signal your console outputs.
  • Input coverage: Confirm that the processor accepts your signal type. Some units cover several analog formats; others target a narrower range.
  • Output resolution: Check whether your TV accepts the processor’s chosen output, especially if you plan to use 1440p or 4K.
  • CRT controls: Look for scanline intensity, mask choices, blending, curvature and other controls rather than assuming every scaler has the same feature set.
  • Latency and bypass behavior: Read the manual for processing modes and any low-latency or pass-through options.
  • Cables and power: Budget for the correct console cable, power supply and any adapters. These are separate compatibility questions from the processor’s advertised input list.
  • Firmware support: Features can change by firmware version. Confirm that the release supporting a desired mode is available for your exact hardware.

RetroTINK-4K Pro as an example of the hardware route

The manufacturer’s RetroTINK-4K Pro page documents CRT simulation, inputs ranging from composite through 1080p digital formats, and output up to 4K60. The page listed a price of $750 when accessed in 2026. That is a manufacturer-listed price at that time, not a permanent price or a recommendation that it is the right choice for every setup; verify current price, stock, included accessories and console-specific cable requirements before ordering.

RetroTINK calls the unit “the world’s most advanced video processor and scaler for retro game consoles.” That sentence is the manufacturer’s positioning, not an independent comparative test. The useful takeaway is the capability list: it is intended to accept a broad range of sources and apply configurable processing before outputting a modern digital signal.

Firmware-dependent scanline and mask features

The RetroTINK-5X firmware notes document adjustable scanline intensity and mask styles including slot mask, aperture grille and PVM. They also warn that simulated scanlines darken the picture, so you may need to raise the display’s brightness or backlight.

The same product family’s homepage reported that 5X firmware 4.0 backported part of the RT4K processing pipeline, adding HDR10 output, energy-normalizing scanlines, full RGB shadow masks and “Quasi-4K” resolutions. Treat those as version-specific features: check the current release notes and support for your device before relying on them. Firmware documentation is not a guarantee that every model receives every feature.

Configure the modern TV for responsive play

Turn on Game picture mode

After the shader or processor is configured, set the TV manually to Game picture mode when that option exists. Libretro’s TV guide explains that non-game modes can add latency through motion interpolation, noise reduction, sharpening and other processing. RetroArch typically does not send the HDMI ALLM flag that would make every television switch modes automatically, so do not assume the TV changed modes on its own.

Game mode does not have one universal latency value. Delay varies by display model, input, resolution and processing settings. Test your own display with the games and controller you use, and turn off extra processing that the TV leaves enabled in Game mode.

Recover brightness lost to scanlines

Scanlines and masks reduce the average brightness of the image by design. If the result looks too dim, raise the TV backlight or brightness carefully, then recheck black levels and shadow detail. Do not simply maximize contrast: crushed blacks can hide sprites and background information.

Make comparisons using the same game, shader or processor preset, TV mode and room lighting. Changing several variables at once makes it impossible to tell whether the improvement came from the CRT simulation or the display calibration.

Troubleshoot common problems

The picture is too dark

  • Reduce scanline or mask intensity before increasing brightness dramatically.
  • Raise backlight first if your TV separates backlight from black-level controls.
  • Check a dark game scene for lost detail after every adjustment.
  • If using a scaler, verify whether its scanline mode includes an energy-normalizing or brightness-compensation option and whether that option is supported by your firmware.

The image looks like lines pasted over pixels

  • Lower scanline strength and add a small amount of blending.
  • Check that the game is displayed at the correct 4:3 aspect ratio.
  • Try a lighter mask or move farther back from the display; a pattern that is obvious up close may blend naturally at normal seating distance.

Text shimmers or fine details disappear

  • Reduce mask strength and bloom.
  • Use less aggressive scanlines, especially with thin-font games.
  • Compare integer and non-integer scaling. Uneven scaling can make a stable shader appear to shimmer.
  • Test a simpler preset before changing many CRT-Royale parameters.

RetroArch stutters after enabling a shader

  • Confirm that the frame rate is stable with shaders disabled.
  • Switch to a lighter preset, then re-enable effects individually.
  • Lower the output resolution only as a diagnostic; if that fixes the issue, the shader or display resolution is exceeding the device’s practical processing budget.
  • Use the shader format recommended for your platform and video driver.

The original console has no signal

  • Verify the console’s exact cable wiring and output standard.
  • Select the processor input manually instead of relying on automatic detection.
  • Try a known-compatible resolution on the TV, then increase resolution after the signal is stable.
  • Check power, firmware and input-source documentation before assuming the console or processor has failed.

There is noticeable control delay

  • Enable Game picture mode and disable motion smoothing and other enhancement features.
  • Check whether both the processor and TV are scaling or processing unnecessarily; use a low-latency mode where available.
  • Test with a direct connection to isolate whether the delay comes from the console, processor or display.
  • Remember that a single latency number from another television does not predict your result.

Which approach should you choose?

Your situation Start here Reason
You mostly use emulators and already have a suitable computer or device A light RetroArch CRT preset It costs no dedicated hardware and lets you tune scanlines, blending and masks immediately
You want more control over phosphor, curvature and glow in emulation CRT-Royale after establishing a simple baseline It exposes more choices, but demands more tuning and may require more processing
You play original cartridges on a console with analog video A scaler or processor matched to the console’s signal The hardware converts the real console output and can add CRT simulation before HDMI output
You want the simplest setup and lowest cost Use a light shader for emulation; compare basic adapters for original consoles Advanced processors add capability and cost that not every setup needs
You want 4K output and extensive processing controls for several consoles A high-end processor whose inputs and firmware cover your systems Verify price, stock, cables, display support and firmware rather than buying on resolution alone

How close can a simulation get to a real CRT?

There is no source-supported universal score or percentage for CRT similarity. A shader or scaler can model selected visual cues, but the result depends on the preset, game resolution, output resolution, display type, viewing distance, room lighting and your memory of the original television. Two people can prefer different amounts of softness, curvature, mask texture or glow while both describing their preferred image as “authentic.”

That subjectivity is a reason to tune from a neutral baseline rather than search for one objectively best preset. Compare the same game and display settings, keep the controls you change documented, and save separate presets for systems or genres that need different treatment. A fast platformer may benefit from clarity; a dark role-playing game may look better with less aggressive scanlines and enough brightness to preserve shadow detail.

A practical final checklist

  • Identify whether your source is emulated or an original console.
  • For RetroArch, load a light CRT preset from Quick Menu → Shaders before trying advanced effects.
  • Correct aspect ratio and scaling before tuning scanlines.
  • Add mask, blending, curvature and bloom gradually.
  • For original hardware, match the processor’s input to the console’s actual signal and verify cable compatibility.
  • Check the processor’s target resolution, firmware and current price before purchase.
  • Set the TV to Game picture mode and disable unnecessary processing.
  • Raise backlight or brightness carefully because simulated scanlines darken the image.
  • Judge the result at your normal seating distance using the games you actually play.

The most reliable path is therefore straightforward: RetroArch shaders for emulation, a properly matched scaler or processor for original consoles, and Game mode plus careful brightness tuning on the display. The final look is a configurable approximation, so the best settings are the ones that preserve responsive play and make your own games look right.
