In Canada, prepaid plans let you pay before using service and are the clearest way to avoid a credit check. Freedom Mobile says its prepaid service has no credit check or contract. Rogers describes chatr as prepaid with no credit checks and no term contract, while Bell directs new prepaid customers to Lucky Mobile, which it describes as a no-credit-check prepaid service.
If you need postpaid billing, ask the carrier about a deposit or prepayment option before applying. Freedom Mobile says some applicants who do not meet its postpaid credit criteria may activate with a deposit, but that is a carrier-specific process, not a guaranteed industry-wide entitlement.

What “no credit history” means for a Canadian mobile plan
A carrier may assess your credit when you open a postpaid account, especially if you want to finance a phone. Someone who has recently arrived in Canada, has never used Canadian credit, or has not yet built a credit file can therefore be declined even when they can afford the monthly bill.

Prepaid service avoids that decision because you pay in advance for the service you plan to use. The CRTC distinguishes prepaid service from postpaid service, where the bill arrives after you have used the service. You still need to satisfy the provider’s identity, payment, network and device requirements, but a conventional credit approval is generally not part of the prepaid signup examples documented here.

No source establishes one of these choices as the cheapest or best-covered option for every Canadian location. Prices, coverage, eligibility rules and plan inventories change, so compare the current offer for your address rather than relying on an old ranking.
How to choose between prepaid and postpaid
Choose prepaid when avoiding a credit check is the priority
- You want service immediately without waiting for a Canadian credit file.
- You prefer to control spending by paying for a defined amount of service in advance.
- You already own a compatible unlocked phone or are willing to buy a handset separately.
- You do not need carrier device financing tied to a postpaid account.
Prepaid is not “free credit.” You must keep the account funded and renew according to the plan’s rules. Before paying, check what happens when data, calling or the validity period runs out. Confirm whether automatic renewal is optional and which payment cards or other methods are accepted.
Consider postpaid only after asking about alternatives
Postpaid can be useful if you need a monthly bill after use, want a particular device-financing arrangement, or require features attached to a postpaid account. However, the carrier may run a credit check and impose additional conditions. Ask three separate questions: whether a credit check is required for service, whether a deposit or prepayment can replace a failed credit assessment, and whether financing a phone has stricter requirements than bringing your own device.

Freedom’s published information is specific to Freedom transactions. It says postpaid activation and a device purchase require a credit check and a major Canadian credit card, while its deposit and prepayment routes have their own conditions. Do not assume another provider offers the same arrangement.
Step-by-step: getting a prepaid plan
- Define your usage. Estimate monthly data, calling, texting and international needs. Include where you live, work and travel because coverage can differ by location.
- Check current offers directly with providers. Compare the monthly price, included data, calling and texting, renewal period, taxes or fees shown at checkout, coverage information and payment methods. The available evidence does not support a universal price or coverage winner.
- Confirm that the phone will work. Use an unlocked handset only after the chosen provider confirms compatibility. “Unlocked” means the phone is not restricted to one carrier; it does not guarantee that every network band or service feature is supported. Freedom specifically says prepaid customers may bring a compatible phone.
- Choose a SIM format. Freedom says a standalone SIM can be purchased and that an eSIM can be activated online. Make sure your phone supports the selected format before ordering.
- Prepare identification and payment. A provider may request identity information and a payment method even when it does not perform a credit check. Follow the exact online or in-store checklist for the plan you selected.
- Activate and test before relying on the number. Insert the SIM or complete the eSIM installation, restart the phone, then test a call, text message, mobile data and voicemail. Test at the locations where you need coverage.
- Record renewal details. Save the account number, renewal date, balance rules and support contact. A prepaid line can stop working when its paid period or balance ends.
How newcomers can prepare for signup
Rogers’ signup information gives newcomers a concrete document path: bring a passport and a permit or permanent-resident card. It also lists a Confirmation of Permanent Residence as an accepted document and describes completing signup at a Rogers store.
Those documents apply to the Rogers process described by that page, not automatically to every carrier or every product. Before travelling to a store, contact the provider and ask whether the exact plan is prepaid or postpaid, which original documents are accepted, whether copies are allowed, and whether an address or additional identity check is required. If you have only recently arrived, explain that you are seeking a no-credit-check prepaid plan; this can prevent staff from starting an unsuitable postpaid application.

Using a deposit or prepayment for Freedom postpaid service
What the published policy indicates
Freedom says a customer who does not meet its postpaid credit criteria may activate with a deposit. Its prepayment guidance says the amount depends on credit-check results. This creates a possible path for someone who wants postpaid service but lacks an established Canadian credit history.
Questions to ask before paying
- Is the deposit option available for the specific plan, region and account type?
- How much is required, and is the amount determined only after the credit check?
- Is the money refundable, credited to a final bill or held under another condition?
- Does the deposit cover service only, or is a separate amount required for a device?
- Can you bring your own compatible phone, or must you purchase one?
- Does device financing require a major Canadian credit card even when service can be activated with a deposit?
- What happens if the application is not approved after the deposit is discussed?
Request the answers in writing or save the provider’s chat transcript. A deposit can reduce the carrier’s risk, but it does not guarantee approval for every product, phone or account configuration.
Phone, SIM and compatibility checks
Bring-your-own-phone checklist
- Confirm the handset is unlocked.
- Check the model number, not just the marketing name.
- Ask the carrier to verify compatibility before you buy a SIM or activate service.
- Check whether the phone supports the network technologies and frequency bands used where you live.
- Verify that eSIM is supported if you plan to activate digitally.
- Back up contacts and authentication codes before moving your number.
Freedom’s prepaid guidance supports bringing a compatible phone, so purchasing a handset from the carrier is not necessarily required. That statement should not be expanded to mean that every unlocked phone works on every Canadian network.

When a separate phone purchase makes sense
If your current handset is incompatible, compare the total cost of an unlocked phone purchased separately with any carrier financing offer. A prepaid account may let you separate the phone purchase from the wireless service, while postpaid financing can be subject to a credit check and a major Canadian credit card. Confirm the return policy and compatibility before opening the package or transferring your number.

Prepaid payment timing
Because prepaid service is paid in advance, the important date is the renewal or expiry date, not a later monthly bill. Ask whether unused data rolls over, whether a failed automatic payment suspends service immediately, and whether you can renew manually. These terms vary by provider and plan.

Postpaid billing timing
Postpaid service bills after use. Ask when the first bill is issued, whether a partial first month is charged, what recurring payment methods are accepted and whether a deposit changes the first bill. Separate the cost of service from any device payments, activation charges or other one-time amounts shown in the agreement.

Keeping service active while building credit
A prepaid account can provide mobile service while you establish other Canadian financial relationships, but do not assume prepaid payments automatically create a credit history. Ask the provider if reporting is offered; do not rely on the phone account to build credit unless the provider explicitly confirms it.
What to do if signup fails
The postpaid application is declined
- Ask whether the issue is credit criteria, identification, payment method, address verification or device financing.
- Request a prepaid alternative from the same provider or another provider.
- For Freedom, ask specifically whether a deposit or prepayment route is available for the service you want.
- If you need a phone, ask whether bringing your own compatible handset removes the financing portion of the application.
The phone will not activate
- Confirm that the SIM or eSIM belongs to the account you just opened.
- Check the phone’s model and compatibility with the provider.
- Restart the device and follow the provider’s activation instructions again.
- Test outdoors or at another location to distinguish an activation problem from local coverage.
- Contact support before buying another phone; ask them to verify the line status and SIM assignment.
You lack one of the requested documents
Do not substitute an unverified document and assume it will be accepted. Contact the store or provider first, explain your status and ask which alternatives are available for the specific plan. Rogers’ listed passport, permit, permanent-resident card and Confirmation of Permanent Residence options are not a universal document list for all carriers.

- If postpaid approval fails, is there a deposit or prepayment path?
- What is the exact recurring price and what one-time charges appear at checkout?
- How much data, calling and texting are included?
- What coverage is available at your home, workplace and regular travel destinations?
- Can you bring your own unlocked phone?
- Which phone models and eSIM devices are compatible?
- Which identification documents are accepted?
- Which payment methods are accepted, and when must payment be made?
- What happens when the prepaid balance or validity period ends?
- Can you cancel, change plans or transfer your number, and what conditions apply?
Important date and availability warning
Bell’s information says it stopped accepting new Bell-branded prepaid activations after December 31, 2024 and directs prospective prepaid customers to Lucky Mobile. If you find an older article or store sign referring to Bell prepaid, treat it as outdated and verify the current activation route before paying.

Bottom line for a newcomer or first-time Canadian customer
For the simplest no-credit-history signup, compare current prepaid plans first. Freedom Mobile, chatr and Lucky Mobile are documented examples of no-credit-check prepaid routes, with different coverage, pricing and terms that you must verify for your location. Bring a compatible unlocked phone when possible, or confirm compatibility before buying one. If you specifically need postpaid service, ask about a deposit or prepayment option—especially the conditions Freedom publishes—but treat approval, amount and device financing as case-specific rather than guaranteed.
