Start with the ear tips supplied in the box, test each ear separately, and follow your model’s insertion and rotation instructions. If your earbuds support a fit test, use it as a second check rather than replacing your own comfort and listening judgment.
Why the seal matters
An ear tip seals the opening of your ear canal so the earbud can deliver sound consistently. A good seal generally makes bass and overall sound feel fuller, reduces some outside noise through passive isolation, and helps active noise cancellation (ANC) work as designed. Bose and Sennheiser both explain that physical fit affects expected ANC performance; Apple and JBL likewise connect a proper seal with sound quality and isolation. See Apple’s AirPods Pro ear-tip guidance, JBL’s in-ear fit guide, and Sennheiser’s ANC explanation.

There is no universally correct tip size. Your left and right ear canals can differ, and the size that seals one ear may be uncomfortable or loose in the other. Aim for a gentle, stable seal—not the tightest possible fit.

Identify the supplied sizes
Most wireless earbuds ship with several silicone tip sizes and are commonly fitted with a medium pair at first. Lay the tips out by size and keep the pair you are currently using separate from the others. Do not assume that the largest tip will seal best; an oversized tip can create pressure, prevent the earbud from sitting correctly, or make the bud work loose.

Inspect each tip before testing. The opening should be round and unobstructed, and the silicone should not be torn or permanently folded. A damaged tip can create a leak that looks like a sizing problem. Keep the sizes identifiable while you compare them, because repeatedly guessing which tip is installed makes the process slower and less reliable.
Read the model-specific insertion method
Earbud housings and nozzle angles differ, so one insertion motion does not suit every design. Beats advises inserting and rotating its earphones until they form a secure fit and acoustic seal. JBL recommends testing a forward or backward rotation while trying tips. Follow the instructions for your exact model rather than forcing a generic deep insertion. The manufacturer instructions are documented in Beats’ fit guide and JBL’s guide.
Some designs are intended to sit at the canal entrance while their outer housing rests in the bowl of the ear. Others need a small twist to lock against the ear. The goal is to reproduce the maker’s intended position, not to push the nozzle as far inward as possible. If your manual shows a particular angle or rotation, use that sequence for both sides before you start comparing tip sizes.

Insert gently
- Choose a starting tip and check that it is fully attached to the nozzle.
- Place the earbud at the entrance of the ear canal; do not push it deeply or use pain as a signal that it is seated.
- Apply light inward pressure only while following the model’s suggested angle.
- If the instructions call for it, rotate the earbud forward or backward until its housing rests securely.
- Repeat the process for the other ear; do not assume both sides need identical adjustments.
Test each ear independently
Work with one ear at a time in a quiet room. A fit that feels acceptable in both ears can still hide a small leak on one side, which may make the stereo image or bass seem unbalanced. Begin with the same recording or spoken passage at a moderate volume, then change only the tip or orientation on the ear you are testing.
Check comfort and pressure
A well-fitted tip should rest gently at the canal opening. Bose describes excessive pressure, a loose sensation, or a deep-feeling fit as reasons to try another size. If you feel sharp pain, throbbing pressure, numbness, or soreness that remains after removal, stop using that size and try a different one. Never compensate for discomfort by pushing the earbud farther in.
Comfort is not merely a first-minute impression. Hold the earbud in place for several minutes, then remove it and check for a tender spot where the tip or housing was pressing. A seal that passes a brief test but causes soreness over a longer session is still a poor fit. You can use different sizes in the two ears when that is what produces a comfortable seal.
Check stability during ordinary movement
Turn your head, speak, walk, and open your jaw as you would during normal use. The earbud should stay in place without repeated pushing. A fit that is stable only while you sit still is not reliable for commuting, exercise, or calls. If the earbud shifts, try the manufacturer’s recommended rotation first, then test another tip size.
Jaw movement is a useful check because talking can subtly change the shape of the ear canal entrance. Also test looking down and turning quickly, but do not deliberately shake the earbud aggressively. You are checking normal stability, not trying to create an extreme scenario that the design was never intended to withstand.

Check the acoustic result
Play familiar music or speech at a moderate volume. A sealed ear usually produces fuller low frequencies and a more even tonal balance than a leaking ear. Outside sound should also be reduced somewhat even when ANC is off. These are practical indicators, not a promise of a particular improvement amount; manufacturer guidance does not establish a universal percentage gain in bass, isolation, or ANC.
Use the same track and volume while comparing sides. A perceived change in bass can otherwise come from the recording, volume control or an equalizer setting rather than the seal. If one ear sounds thinner, refit that side before changing the phone’s balance controls.
Use an in-app or settings-based fit test when your model supports one
Fit tests can identify an obvious leak, but they are model-dependent and should supplement—not replace—comfort and movement checks. A test normally plays a short signal and evaluates how the earbud and tip are sealing, so run it with the earbuds positioned as you would actually wear them.

AirPods Pro
Supported AirPods Pro generations provide an Ear Tip Fit Test or Acoustic Seal Test in the connected-device settings. Follow the on-screen instructions and test both ears. If the result is poor on one side, change that ear’s tip rather than automatically changing both. The available tests and menu names can vary by AirPods Pro generation and operating-system version; Apple’s current instructions are at Choose your AirPods Pro ear tips.
QuietComfort Earbuds II
Bose provides an Earbud Seal Test in its companion app for QuietComfort Earbuds II. Run the test after positioning the earbuds as described by Bose, then adjust the affected side and repeat. The support procedure is documented at Wearing and adjusting your earbuds.
Beats and Galaxy Buds
Some Beats product families and Samsung Galaxy Buds models include their own fit or seal checks. The exact control, supported models, and app version differ, so use the instructions for your product. Samsung’s Galaxy Earbud Fit Test guidance is available at Samsung Gulf Support. If your app has no test, rely on the physical and listening checks above.
How to interpret a failed result
A failed test is a prompt to reseat the earbud, verify that the tip is fully attached, or try another size. It is not a reason to tolerate pressure or force a deeper insertion. Conversely, a passing result does not override pain, instability or soreness. If the test repeatedly disagrees with your physical experience, prioritize a comfortable, stable position and check the manufacturer’s fitting instructions.

- Prepare your ears and tips. Make sure the ear canal entrance and tips are clean and dry. Moisture or skin oil can let a tip slide.
- Start with the supplied medium tip. Attach it securely and insert the earbud using the maker’s stated angle.
- Stabilize the housing. Rotate or adjust it only as the product instructions describe.
- Evaluate one ear. Check pressure, movement stability, bass/fullness and outside-noise reduction.
- Repeat on the other ear. Select a different size if that ear needs it.
- Run the supported fit test. Treat a failed result as a prompt to reposition or change the tip, not as permission to tolerate pain.
- Recheck after movement. Walk, talk and turn your head; a seal that breaks immediately is not a finished fit.
Write down which size and orientation work for each side if you are testing several combinations. This is especially useful when one ear needs a different tip. Once you find a good setup, store unused tips somewhere clean so they do not collect dust or get mixed up.
Choosing the next tip size
| What you feel or hear | Likely issue | What to try next |
|---|---|---|
| Earbud feels loose, bass is weak, and outside sound leaks in | Tip is too small or insertion/orientation is off | Try the next size up, then repeat the model-specific rotation and listening check |
| Strong pressure, soreness, or a blocked, deep sensation | Tip may be too large or inserted too far | Try the next size down and use a shallower, instruction-compliant position |
| One ear seals while the other leaks | Natural left-right ear difference | Use different sizes or orientations on each side |
| Seal is good while still but breaks when walking or speaking | Housing is not stabilized or tip friction is insufficient | Reinsert and rotate as directed; test an adjacent tip size |
| App fit test fails despite comfort | Position or acoustic path may still be leaking | Re-seat the earbud, check that the tip is fully attached, and repeat the test |
| Sound changes whenever you touch the earbud | The tip or housing is moving against the ear | Check the attachment, then compare the adjacent size and the maker’s specified orientation |
Change one variable at a time when possible. That makes it easier to tell whether the improvement came from size, orientation, or seating depth. If moving up a size increases pressure without improving stability, return to the smaller tip and focus on the model’s rotation or housing position instead.
When a good fit still sounds wrong
Check the tip attachment
Remove the earbud and inspect the tip’s central opening. It should sit evenly on the nozzle and not be folded, stretched, or partly detached. A crooked tip can leak even when the earbud housing feels stable. Reattach it firmly before running another fit test.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Check for debris and moisture
Earwax, dust, sweat and skin oil can affect both grip and sound. Clean the tips according to the earbud maker’s instructions, let them dry completely, and avoid inserting a wet tip. Do not push liquid into the speaker mesh.
Check both channels and settings
If one side remains quieter after refitting, confirm that your phone’s left-right balance is centered and that mono audio or an accessibility adjustment has not been enabled. These settings are separate from physical fit and can imitate a seal problem. Also compare the same ANC, transparency and equalizer settings on both tests.
Separate fit from ANC expectations
ANC cannot remove every sound, especially voices and irregular high-frequency noises. A good seal improves the conditions for ANC, but it does not guarantee silence. If low-frequency noise remains after a comfortable, stable seal and a successful model-specific test, the limitation may be the earbud’s ANC design rather than your tip size.
Replacement ear tips: when and how to consider them
If every supplied size is either loose or painful, compatible replacement ear tips are a reasonable next step. Compatibility is specific to the earbud model: the inner diameter, locking ridge and nozzle shape must match, and the installed tip must still allow the earbuds to sit in their charging case. A tip that fits the nozzle but prevents the case from closing is not a practical solution.
Use a compatibility-first checklist
- Confirm the exact earbud model and generation, not just the product family name.
- Check that the replacement tip is designed for that nozzle and retention system.
- Verify that the charging case can close without compressing the tip or misaligning the contacts.
- Test comfort, movement stability, sound and passive isolation on each ear.
- Retest after a few minutes of movement; a material that feels secure initially may loosen with heat or moisture.
Do not assume that a universal set, a particular material, or the largest available size will work. Manufacturer guidance supports changing tips, but it does not establish one aftermarket shape or material as best for every ear. If you shop for replacement ear tips for wireless earbuds, keep model compatibility prominent in the product description and verify the return policy.

Compare replacements using the same criteria as the supplied tips: pressure, stability, fullness of familiar audio, reduction of outside sound with ANC off, and fit-test feedback where available. A replacement that improves one criterion but makes the case unusable or causes soreness is not an overall improvement. Keep the original tips until you are confident the replacement works for both ears.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fit considerations for calls, exercise and long listening
Calls and transparency modes
For calls, a stable seal prevents you from repeatedly touching the earbuds to restore sound. If you use a transparency or ambient mode, remember that hearing more outside sound is intentional; it does not necessarily indicate a leak. Compare the same mode with the earbuds seated correctly before changing tips.
Walking and workouts
Movement, sweat and jaw motion can change friction. Start with the smallest comfortable adjustment that remains stable, and test by walking before exercising intensely. If the earbuds loosen only when damp, clean and dry the tips and ears; then reassess size. Do not tighten them to the point of pain.

A tip that seems secure for ten minutes may create pressure over an hour. After a longer listening session, note any tenderness at the canal entrance or pressure from the housing. Persistent discomfort means the fit needs changing, even if an app reports a seal.
A simple comparison method for two promising sizes
When two sizes seem plausible, test them in a controlled order rather than switching repeatedly at random. Use the same ear, recording, volume and orientation. First check whether the smaller option stays stable while you talk and walk. Then check whether the larger option adds pressure or a blocked sensation. Listen for fullness and outside-noise reduction with ANC off, and run the app test if supported. Choose the option that balances all five checks: comfort, stability, acoustic fullness, passive blocking and fit-test feedback.
Repeat that comparison on the other ear. The winning combination may be different because ear canals are not identical. If neither option is comfortable and stable, revisit insertion and attachment before concluding that you need an accessory.
Quick decision checklist
- Have you tried every supplied tip size?
- Did you test the left and right ears separately?
- Did you follow your model’s stated insertion angle and rotation?
- Does the earbud remain stable while walking, talking and turning your head?
- Is the seal comfortable rather than painfully tight?
- Do familiar recordings sound full, with less outside sound when ANC is off?
- Did you run the supported app or settings fit test?
- Is the tip fully attached, clean, dry and compatible with the charging case?
When to stop troubleshooting
Stop experimenting with a size that causes pain, skin irritation, bleeding, persistent numbness or worsening ear symptoms. Remove the earbuds and allow the ear to recover; seek medical advice for ongoing pain or hearing changes. If no supplied or model-compatible replacement tip provides a comfortable, stable seal, the earbud’s shape may simply not suit your ears. A different earbud design is safer than forcing an uncomfortable fit.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should both ears use the same ear-tip size?
Not necessarily. Left and right ear canals can differ, so test each ear independently and use different sizes if that provides a comfortable, stable seal.

Is a tighter earbud seal always better?
No. Excessive pressure, soreness or a deep, blocked sensation indicate that you should try another size or a shallower, instruction-compliant position. The goal is secure and comfortable, not painfully tight.
Why do my earbuds sound thin or lack bass?
A leak from a small tip, poor orientation or incomplete attachment can reduce perceived bass and fullness. Reseat the earbud, check the tip and try the next size while comparing the same recording.
Why does one earbud fit while the other keeps leaking?
Natural left-right differences are common. Test the sides separately and try a different tip size or orientation on the leaking side instead of changing both tips automatically.
Can an earbud fit test replace listening and comfort checks?
No. App and settings tests are useful for detecting an obvious leak, but they are model-dependent. A passing test does not make a painful or unstable fit acceptable.
Will a good seal make ANC silent?
No. A good physical seal gives ANC better conditions, but ANC does not remove every sound, particularly voices and irregular high-frequency noise.
Can I buy universal replacement ear tips?
Treat universal compatibility as unproven. Match the replacement to the exact earbud model, nozzle and retention system, and confirm that the case still closes. Test comfort and stability on each ear.
What should I do if every supplied tip hurts or slips?
Stop using painful sizes, recheck the maker’s insertion method and inspect the tips for damage. If no supplied or model-compatible replacement tip works comfortably, consider a different earbud design and seek medical advice for persistent ear symptoms.
The Bottom Line
Start with the supplied tips and your model’s own insertion method. Test each ear separately, compare comfort, stability and sound, and use an available fit test as a supporting check. If the supplied sizes fail, choose replacement ear tips made for the exact model and verify that they still fit the charging case. Never force a painful seal: a comfortable, stable fit is the one that supports sound and isolation over real-world use.
